Did it to the stems and springs and then lubbed the housing, the switches are as good as lubbing 100% by hand. Great tip.

Absolutely great video! I don't use this method often, as I am SUPER picky about how I lube switches. But if I ever need to get some lubed fast, I use this method because it is by far the fastest way to lube a set of switches.

Of all the hobbies I've dabbled in, the mechanical keyboard community is simultaneously the most kind but also most obsessive. The fact that anyone could spend 3 to 4 hours hand lubing switches for only a 5-10% difference over tub lubing -- rather than just tub lubing -- is a perfect example of that obsession. This is probably why tub lubing is going to continue to be slept-on. It's in the uncanny valley of wanting the feel of lubed switches without the obsessive loss of time. This is also exactly why I adore this method. Results over process. (but only for linears lol)

Love the idea of tub lubing but then again plastic against plastic might cause some micro scratches on the stem itself. I'll stick to the hand lubing just the housings. My two cents.

i use my hands to hold on to the switches while lubing, it was messy but it worked out properly. i was lubing akko v3 pro cream blue. i lubed the bottom case rails, the sides, and the spring. i used krytox gpl 205g0 on both. the result was superb, it sounds quieter and more deeper. the spring pringy sound is gone after lubing the springs. the tactile feeling is still there, but i will definitely use krytox 105 next time for the springs.

I honestly think this is the best way to lube all around. My biggest issue with hand lubing is consistency of how much is applied to each switch. I don’t have that issue when using this method and I’ve found the lube from spring and stems to be adequate. Lubing the bottom housing makes the switch too sluggish imo.

Ive been doing this for almost 2 years now but one thing I notice is that on stems with softer material (like pom) the stems get scratched and result in a scratchier feel than hand lubing and in extreme cases scratchier than stock.

Hey man! Hope you've been well. Great video dude, as always! I plan to make one on the topic myself.. but i'm kinda on the fence. Maybe this is a hot take but imo I think tub lubing is kinda mid. Aside from selecting "easy mode" I do wonder why did this get so popular tho? I know, I know, the time saved is nice but I tried it on two builds and imo its just "okay." At the end of the day, it was too inconsistent for my personal taste. I had to go back in, pop them open again and touch up all the stems I didn't think had the proper amount or sometimes too much.. Seriously tho, i'm not saying its wrong to do this at all. I do think its a great option for those who are trying out different switches for sure. That being said tho, and maybe this is the perfectionist in me talking, but we spend all this money on a nice keyboard, stabs, switches, keycaps, wait for months, sometimes for a year or more, only to half-ass the lube job? I think I would only recommend this if like you said, you are itching to get it done, and want "almost" instant gratification. My two cents to everyone getting into DIY and not just buying pre-lubed, would be: Take your time. Enjoy the build. Do it right. It's not a race.
@RegaliaKeyboards
@RegaliaKeyboards Год назад
I think the issue with the instance you tried is just not enough shaking of the stems. This method will give you a VERY consistent lube job if you do it properly. You are going to have a very even coat of lube, and if the stems don't look even you just need to do a bit more shaking of the tub. You can easily inspect them when opening up the tub. This is why using a large opening tub like in the video is helpful, so you can do a quick check on the consistency before you fully assemble the switches. By all means, feel free to lube however you choose to, I just wanted to comment on the inconsistent batch you had when using this method :)
@TW2LV2
@TW2LV2 Год назад
@@RegaliaKeyboards Oh it's def not an issue with how I implemented the method. It also comes down to how someone likes certain switches lubed. I am not saying it shouldn't be a method to use but rather I think someone gains a lot more (especially if they're a noob or just starting) to put in the time to learn what parts of the switch you like lubed and others areas that you don't. With Tub or bag lubing, you just do not have that option, just saying... For example, I stopped lubing poles and instead hit the housing hole with a very light poke of a brush with 105. Better to break in and lube with intention, and not "lose" any of the qualities you do like by just lubing of the stem entirely.
@RegaliaKeyboards
@RegaliaKeyboards Год назад
@@TW2LV2 Only reason I mentioned it was an issue with the implementation of the method is you said some of the stems were inconsistent. Tub lubing done correctly actually makes the switches more consistent as they have a more consistent application of lube on the stem overall. There is definitely a factor of preference in how you like your switches lubed, 100% agree. Some people like to put a little lube on the pole of the stem, others don't do that. Some put a little on the hole of the bottom housing, others don't. I personally don't touch the bottom housing at all with lube, unless the leaf ping is to the point where I need to put a little behind the leaf, but that is it. I also personally don't lube the pole on the stem, and opt for just hitting all 4 sides of the stem and that is it. That is the biggest reason I generally don't tub lube, and only do so when I really am in a crunch to get some switches done. So agree that people do need to know how they like their switches lubed, that will play a huge factor in whether they tub lube or hand lube their switches.
@fonykid788

But doesn’t the lube get all over the top of the stem that the keycap sits on?
@Merkeebs

It does get on the + stem but cleaning it off with paper towels or a wet wipe works perfectly fine
@RegaliaKeyboards

Yes, it does. This was part of the step mentioned on wiping the top off after closing up the switches. You still will save tons of time even wiping off the cross part of the stem.

My most efficient way to lube switches is to not lube them at all. If it's for someone else, sure. I'll spend half a day lubing them by hand. But if I'll be the one using them, they'll remain stock.

Bag lubing exists for a really long time (not for stems). And the recommended amount of lube is a 1 drop if oil per each 10 springs. Here you are wasting your oil. Stems: it's good that you enjoys it, but I woul not recommend this method to a public. Better use unlubed than something like this.
