This is INVALUABLE advice when tuning for a gig, a session or during a performance! There are times when you have to get it done yesterday in order to avoid making your cohorts angry.

Hey GF! You are a bloody genius! I'm 53 years old and have been playing since I was 15. Never once has it come to my mind to learn the song of my own guitar!! Just learn how to sing six notes! Thank you. You are the man!

Also if one string is in tune, you can tune the rest by matching the notes. -,- Fifth fret, and fourth on the G

yes mr frudua whatever you said was absolutely right my guitar teacher does the same while tuning his guitar and when he did it for the first time in such a short time i was amazed and now i am trying that myself hope i learn this

@chrishpippin "Either way, if you can't hear it out of tune without a tuner, you're wasting your time!" I agree!
@Shadowtjestalker
@Shadowtjestalker 12 лет назад
I usually tune my first string with a tuner and then do the rest by ear because although the tuner may have all the strings in the right tuning, the intonation of the guitar may be slightly off.

I watched some of your vids,n' i can tell you're providing good advice

@ToniMtl78 You're in fact correct. For most of us this is way to reach in seconds 95% of the tuning and do the fine tuning in with a tuner of course in another bunch of seconds. Anyway with some training you can get to a perfect tunig by ear as well.

I have a friend Eric Uglum, you can search him here on YT, I have seen him jamming and reach over and tweak the other guys tuning keys, the point is you CAN get used to the correct pitch and tune accordingly, this guy is always right on tune with just his ear, don't underestimate the human mind/ear

Of course you have. This is just to get to a nearly close tuning. Then usual method might be used for fine tuning.

When I need a quick tune I tune by picking two adjacent strings and listen for the harmony, except for the G and B strings which you could still do its just a different harmonic part. The D and the G strings are really simple, play them both and loosen the D string then slowly bring it up, you can hear that interval really well.

@FruduaTv Cool, thanks a lot. what if you have an original Floyd trem? I'm going to check your other videos out to see if I can find out how to quickly tune a Floyd trem.

@hastyberford well, this is realy usefull in a gig...
@cyphol
@cyphol 12 лет назад
@FruduaTv Well... this is kind of basic, but I prefer playing on a guitar that actually sounds tuned. Just because every string is tuned as loose strings doesn't mean a chord will sound accurate. Yes, I know intonation is required. But every guitar is still unique even though it is intonated. I usually tune the A string with a tuner, and then use power chords around the 5th or 6th fret to match and tune other strings. That way, the guitar is tuned to how much pressure I use when I play.
@FruduaTv
@FruduaTv 13 лет назад
@hastyberford ahaha yes. It's also good to quickly get to 99% of the tuning and then fine tune with a tuner.
@frozenfire72
@frozenfire72 12 лет назад
yes that is absolutely correct thats what my teacher tells me and i've never seen him use a tuner he does all the tuning by ears and i want to learn that
@metalfiend124
@metalfiend124 12 лет назад
@hastyberford I had my friend break a string on stage, he ran off to find his tuner in his case. I turned a flashlight on his guitar while he workded on it. It was an Ibanez Z trem I think, and he had to loosen then tighten the strings, didn't have time to stretch the new strings, and without me holding the flashlight up close he wouldn't have been able to see the guitar in the dark. Meanwhile the crowd waited, It took 3 to 6 minutes to do, and my friend is a guitar teacher too.

great suggestion, as usual, dude!!! thats a very practical way of tuning and though its very simple, i never thought of that....and of course, i doesnt surprise me most people here, say its best to use a tuner...thats the lazy, talentless way of tuning!!!! great vids...keep it up!
@MrTravisAl
@MrTravisAl 11 лет назад
...or you can just use 5th and 7th fret harmonics best audible vibration fluctuation meter for me. you can really hear when they're in / out of tune tofrther. this excludes between the G and the B string of course. it's better than tuning by standard 5th fret. Which by the way, all of them are 4ths of each other.

I've always had to revert back to using a tuner. It frustrates me every time, but the human ear is simply imperfect. No matter how much ear training you've got, a tuner will always work better.

very useful in MY case: i normally tune my guitar on scenario and dont use tuners, cause tuners are not in SAME pitch than some Keyboards my band uses so is useless to pre-tune with a Tuner cause by a little amount of difference between Tuner and Keyb (small BUT noticeable) well is not so nice the final sound U get. (has happenned 2-3 times to me and other guitarrrists. 1/4 tone pitch diference is noticeable ;] )

When you tune with this system, take in consideration that it´s not perfect. Each interval into strings goes down 4 or 5 chromas on open strings and you could have like 15 chromas down accumulated when you start on the E (6th) string to the G (3th). It works, but it is not perfect.

No Luthier. It's easily said than done. The basic problem of the amateurs is HOW TO COMPARE tones , the one in his mind (or another instrument or equipment) against the guitar he is tuning. Consider also how he can MEMORIZE those 6 tones (as you said). Now how can we teach students to how to "memorize" those 6 tones? @ 1:03 "I need one string", but where shall we get that one string?

What if you are at a gig and pop a string? You need to be able to do this without any reliance on technology.
@AlbertMontinola

@mean0machine0 I don't think using harmonics for tuning especially when using a tuner is accurate. Fact is, when you play the guitar, you either use open strings or fret the guitar. In my opinion, you will get a false reading on the tuner using the harmonics instead of using the open string for tuning. Just my opinion. =)

He didn't claim to have perfect pitch he acknowledged he had one string in tune as a reference point for the others. I used to (before electronic tuners became common and cheap) use the tune of "You're in the army now" picked on open strings 4 3 3 2 4 3 to recall notes so with your telephone dial tone of F (third fret fourth string) anyone should be able to tune up accurately.☺☺☺

In my opinion, never use a tuner. Tuning by ear helps you become a better musician, and when playing in a band, you have to be in tune with your band members and be able to make quick changes when necessary.

Love your videos but you are wrong in that response. Even with nut compensation you cannot pull a stringed instrument with straight frets into tune in every position.

using a tuner is a fine thing to do.. but how about trying this, once, twice.. for the 50ty time, and enjoy yourself, as you have became a better guitar player.. everyone can tune using a tuner, but this method is faster, and lets you develop your ears.. if you don't want to try this so bad, why even bother playing guitar.. we're on youtube, just listen to whatever guitar tune you want to.. be a real guitarist, and learn.. :D

i, for example dont even need to hear the first tuned note, because i have an absolute hearing. but most of the people i know, dont have the ability to remember the tunes in mind. therfore your "method" is totally useless.

so, how was that people tuned instrumente before turers were invented??? today we rely to much in technology, a good musician should be able to tune up his instrument just be ear, specialy a guitar. I learned that way, and beleave me, no tuner can compit with a good ear. Practice, develope your listening skill, you wont regret
@hailmasch
@hailmasch 12 лет назад
@bati9rst Yeah... You're not going to be able to hear yourself going BA BA BA BA BO BO at a gig. You're better off using harmonics or an actual tuner.
@ToniMtl78
@ToniMtl78 13 лет назад
Dude.. we all have in mind what the notes sound like but here I can tell you this guitar in not PERFECTLY in tune this way. You want to prove your method is the best so that you can give this kind of ''lessons''? just take a tuner and you will see this is not in tune after what you just did. Harmonics ans tuners ARE the accurate and right way to tune a guitar.
