Oakcliff's Rigger and Match 40 Fleet Manager, Chris Kennedy, gives a comprehensive lecture on how to tune your sailboat rig. He starts with an overview of the different types of rigs: straight spreaders, swept back spreaders, mast head vs fractional forestays, marconi rigs, etc. He then dives into the nuances of trimming adjustment lines to manipulate the masts position and bend when racing.
The audience for this lecture was our 2017 group of Saplings, or summer-long trainees. They receive teaching like this and hands on experience doing both maintenance and racing all summer. There is a nearly 100% employment rate for our Sapling graduates. To learn more, visit the programs page on our website: www.oakcliffsailing.org/progr...

Great video, ignore the harping about the production, the talent is great and the content is gold. Compulsory viewing for ALL crew! I have a question: Once the mast is straight using the caps at 2400psi, you add "three or four" turns to the D1s and D2. Then you add turns to the caps to get to 3400. That's an iterative process, up and down on the jack, couple of turns at a time on the caps. So, wouldn't it be simpler and easier to jack the mast to 3400 and add shims to fix it there? Much less towing and fro-ing. If so, I guess you wouldn't add turns to the D1's, but leave them hand tight, and once the mast is at 3400, adjust the D1s? I guess the answer is that D1 turns (and D2's) will add to the pressure, but that's going to happen anyway, right?

What kind of jack are you using to raise the mast?
