CORRECTION: Simon Sinek did not create the concept of finite and infinite games. The concept was instead created by James Carse in 1986. Sinek merely developed it further and applied it mostly to the world of business. Nonetheless, his work on the subject is incredibly valuable.

i used to in new england and was very into forestry as a younger adult. life brought me to the deep south for the last decade or so but i have spent the last year looking for land in maine to start a timber farm. these videos have been *infinitely* helpful in preparing for and understanding the responsibility in the context of both contemporary economy as well as philisophy. Truly great content, a great service to the rest of us. thank you!

The trouble is that as a society, in economics as well as in other areas, we've become increasingly myopic, and unable to look past next quarter's results. I'd be interested in seeing a case study, either of a plot that has been managed in this way, or looking at recommendations to start moving a forest in that direction.

I think Stora Enso can be an example of it. They are actually the oldest stock company in the world, started out in mining (one game, certain set of rules) and now own over 2 million hectares of forests (new game)

Nothing would please me more than to pass my 150 acres of mixed growth forest and the cabin I built to my family. Hopefully it works out that they love the place like I have.

We manage forest land and plant trees for the next generations. While trying to plan for their increased value, I don’t plan on reaping the rewards in my lifetime, I only hope that the next generations ration it for their children’s futures too. I never thought of it as finite and infinite with those analogies but they are spot on. Thanks for sharing

That is of course the unknown. What the next generation will do. How can responsibility and accountability to future generations be passed forward? It can’t. We can only try. I believe the best thing is to develop and implement a management plan that focuses on sustainability the when followed will result in a successful outcome .

With todays land prices...... when estates are closed there are those who only look at the " dollars " !!!!! I have a neighbor whom plans to sell the farm. They have called in a logger to remove any trees that fetch " dollars " ......removing 6 inch diameter walnut trees......nothing remaining ! Raping the land ! They care less about the future ! This is more often the case then not !

Even if I harvested the the trees.... The saw mills wont even take them if I delivered the logs to the saw mill ! ! They wont even talk to you about a price on the cut log ! Thats because they would have to pay a lot more because the work has been done ! The price would still be firewood price !

Could you please do a vid on your take on the Daisugi method and integrating permaculture? Permaculture meaning, setting up companion trees and bushes that complement the tree, helping it grow much faster and healthier but simultaneoisly making it more complicated to harvest.

I ~think~ you sort of touched on it but to state clearly(er) from the book: The main objective of a Finite Game is to "win"; the main objective of an Infinite Game is to keep playing. You can "win" almost all Infinite Games simply if you don't quit.

Yes, exactly, the infinite game has no condition of victory, therefore, you keep playing forever. You can't win an infinite game, but you can lose by giving up or expending the resources necessary to continue.

Here's another way of putting your idea of finite vs infinite games: In a finite game there is some objective that reaches a maximum in some finite span of time. Eg, an oil field will eventually be depleted, and after the oil has been depleted there is no reason to keep capital tied up by keeping the land In an infinite game, the maximum (or, more precisely, the global maximum) can never be attained in a finite span of time. You can treat timber as though it is a finite game, come in and clear out a forest but doing so you'll always be leaving out future profit, which while is only a potential is nevertheless a sure thing. This strategy involves going after a "local maximum" instead of optimizing the overall maximum value, which would entail taking care of the land and the forest to make sure you are harvesting the right trees at the right time To be clear: in a finite game the global maximum IS a local maximum. In an infinite game local maxima cannot be the global maximum And (nitpicking) hence it's not actually about "getting rid of victory conditions" (and this is probably just phrasing but to me implies you can actually change where the maximum value can be found) as it is about seeing that by ignoring the actual maximum value you are really only going to ever get the smallest fraction of potential profit

Let me expand on this a little further because I think there's a good chance you understand the mathematics better than me: I'm suggesting that there is a function p(t) that measures the profit or value of a piece of land at a given time t. And for any game, finite or infinite, the "winning" strategy is to maximize the total value of p(t) over a span of time with starting time t_0 and an end time t_end And in a "finite game" (eg, extracting oil or other fossil fuels) there exists two times t_1 and t_2 with t_0
