Here I explain how to get the MOST volume out of your amp simply by dialing in your amp without anti feed back pedals or any pedals. All I'm using here is a Microphone, chord and an amp. Please also see this article: / anti-feed-back-7032967
Gear:v
1.) Blue Moon Hohner Marine Band in A.
2.) Jason Ricci Signature Microphone by The Lone Wolf Blues Company,
3.) XLR Microphone cable
4.) Impedance transformer Low to High
5.) Harp Gear HG-50 4/10" 50 watt tube amplifier
Note: you will get more volume and actual AMP/SPEAKER distortion using a low z microphone like this Jason Ricci signature mic. However, you will get more break up at a LOWER volume using a high z microphone or bullet style.

Nice glasses Jason, I like them. You showed us this at a seminar many years ago ... maybe it was Gindick's Jam camp? I really don't remember where it was, but I remember you showing us this and I've used it successfully ever since. You said the tone controls were frequency selective volume knobs and I never forgot it!

Thanks for confirming the process Jason. I don't know how many guitarists I've had to slap away from my amp for fiddling with it. They have no idea amps work in a totally different way when you have a mic plugged into it. Keep save man, and we'll see you down the road.

Jason! First of all, it makes my heart happy to see you back in the saddle. Second, this is a GREAT explanation of how to really work an amp. I've always kinda felt around the idea of how the tone and volume knobs interacted, but this will really help my approach. Peace, be well, and keep sharing the knowledge and the music brother.

Jason, I’ve been playing for 51 years and this was THE best explanation of amp volume/tone that I’ve ever seen. I do have a question. If you mic has a volume knob where do you set that? We have a mutual friend who told me that he always has his mic volume all the way up; then works on the amp. Thoughts?
@jasonricci
@jasonricci 3 года назад
I set it all the way up when getting the tone. Some guys like to leave a little because the mic can sound different. I don't because I know I'll accidentally turn it up too far and make bad noises. Haa!

For loud gigs or outdoors, etc., I play a Bassman LTD per a suggestion I learned from The Gear Page: turn everything down, raise Mids to about 5-6 and adjust volume to taste. For the Bassman circuit, this will result in an almost flat response. (Check out the tone stack generator on the Duncan amps page for details.) This was a suggestion for guitar players, but it works great for harp.

I realize that this video is a few years old - but I just bought the "Jason Ricci Signature Mic", and the site says that this mic is Hiz.... Is that a change to the mic since this video? Just wondering, so I know if I need the impedance transformer or not?
@jasonricci

We offered both for a while. The mic is essentially hi z here because I'm using a low to hi transfer plug so it's the same thing. We now only offer them in 1/4" hi z

Hi, Jason! Question for you... I recently used a Fender Pro Jr. on stage and was having difficulty getting enough volume before getting feedback. The Pro Jr. only has two control knobs - volume and tone. I adjusted both controls, but eventually settled for turning the Tone control all the way down and that allowed me to turn the Volume control up to almost 4. Still not enough volume. Any suggestions for how I might have achieved more volume?
@jasonricci
@jasonricci 5 месяцев назад
Hey Jamey my bro!!! No unfortunately thats all you could of done. I guess maybe an anti feed back pedal and/or a more modern (non bullet) microphone night of helped a bit more but there's definitely a reason why almost all the touring pros use BIG amps!

This was really interesting, my worst enemy ist the feed back... it's really a bitch. But these settings might just solve my problem, not only to get the volume high enough, but creating the colour and the warmth of the sound too.... Many thanks for this very instructive tutorial...!
