This is how I turn a horse with my legs. When I was a beginner rider, I was somewhat confused on which leg to use to turn a horse and how to do it, so if you're a beginner rider I hope this helps and thank you for watching! I upload a new video twice a week. Consider Subscribing, a lot more Horse Training and Learning to Ride videos coming Your way!!‪@horsetraining101‬

I rode once on a lesson horse much respected by the teacher & I listened to what she told me. The horse mostly went as I was indicating though I did not get the leg interaction as you show. Around pylons (in an arena) we tended to go wider rather than tighter which I was not about to be impatient about & get tense. If we meet again I want the horse to recognize me as someone getting to know him but not the "jabby" insistent type. Horses though, are amazing !

I swear, there was a point where your toes were pointing beyond 90degrees and I have no idea how to do that 1:39

😁I don't know how I did it either! I remember editing the video and was stunned that my foot turned that far.

I've been watching your videos of and on. I like your simple directions. I have a lovely old mustang gelding that we're learning leg and "butt" aides with. I also have a young mare I'll be training to ride in the spring. Your videos help a ton. I've got to remember to go buy a helmet.

Actually in Iceland we touch the horse on the inside in front (like near the girth) to get them to turn around that leg. So the way you are going you are putting that leg (human) forward. So I want the horse to go right I touch him on the right side in front, with my right leg. I will actually at the same time touch him a bit more back on the other side (so that part is the same as what you are doing). If I am bareback though my horse does not need the outside cue, she will just feel that inside leg and wrapper her body around it and its easier to just focus on that leg, the other one is already on her, both are to keep balance.
@horsetraining101
@horsetraining101 Год назад
That's interesting. What about the concept of the horse moving away from pressure(that's why I use my outside leg)?Now when I am doing a circle, I do use my inside leg to help bend the horse in that circle. Inside leg for bend and outside leg for turns.
@IT-zx5jc
@IT-zx5jc Год назад
@@horsetraining101 Well you are not applying any pressure, you are just touching them there. Its like an extra cue with the reins. If your horse is used to feeling this touch there when turning they will know where you want to go. If of course the horse is not moving you need that outside leg (which is situated further back) to drive them. As long as you are moving in a decent speed you dont need any "kicks". Of course Icelandic horses are quite small and trying to kick them to drive is a bit hard anyway except if your legs are super short. For driving the hrose forward we squeeze them with our thighs, both at same time or make a smacking sound. They are very willing (too if anything) so driving aids are not "big".

@@horsetraining101 for me it feels like the horse leans on me, my leg is just support there. As if my leg is a pole they need to know exactly how to turn around LOL. If that makes sense ;) It makes their turn easier. Test it on yours :D Best to do while moving. Its right behind the front leg you put your leg.

I squeeze with my thighs to drive the horse forward and also encourage the horse with a smacking sound too. That was very interesting, thanks for sharing that.

thank you! So outside leg is moving front horse legs, ie turn? Inside leg is moving haunches?
@horsetraining101
@horsetraining101 Год назад
Yes, outside leg turns the horse but my inside leg isn't moving the haunches, it stays on position 2(rib cage) to keep the horse moving in the turn. I hope that helped. Outside leg for turning, inside leg for bending.
@jameshornung4596
@jameshornung4596 Год назад
If you want a horse to turn first you bring the leg or heel in the way you are turning, that bends him the way he is turning, as soon as he starts to turn you take your leg or heel out, than you bring the leg or heel in on the outside. That is the way a horse would turn on his own.
@horsetraining101
@horsetraining101 Год назад
That's definitely another way to do it. Where I'm from, using the outside leg is the cue for turning, away from the pressure. This is the way I was taught. Inside leg for bend and outside leg for turning. I do see how you explained it would also work.

What is leg position 1,2 ,3 ect?I thought to go right reign to the right and use right leg to move rear end to the left?
@horsetraining101
@horsetraining101 Год назад
leg position 1 moves the shoulder, position 2 moves the rib cage and position 3 moves the hind end. Yes, you can use the right rein to turn right, I am showing how to use your leg. To turn right, you can use right rein and left leg on position 2. I hope I explained it for you, if not let me know.

does the horse need to feel your boot heel? I mean if you do it with stirrups
@horsetraining101
@horsetraining101 8 месяцев назад
Yes, but only if the horse hasn't responded to the roll of my calf (turning my toe out). Whether I am in the saddle or riding bareback it's no different. Hope that answered your question.

I changed from E to W, there is not so much difference only the release is missing 😉😉😉

@horsetraining101 10 месяцев назад
That's interesting! If you don't mind me asking, if there is no release, what is the reward for the horse? 🤔
@horse-lover68

@@horsetraining101 That is the reason why I changed the riding style. In the 1970 tees when I started the teacher said:" long rein's" and the horses were able to stretch. Do you see this now somewhere in a dressage or jumping competition?? There is NO release in E-riding!! Not really, only a "Good boy/girl" what Jean's nothing to the horse+ horses need their head to balance (I know you know all what I am writing anyway)- in E they are forced to go "behind the middle point"- hyper flexion, Rollkur, ECT.
