Turning wood spindles is a basic woodturning skill that you can use to add features to table legs or kitchen islands. In this video, you'll learn the basic tools and techniques used to turn a spindle on the lathe. WOOD magazine's Brian Simmons demonstrates how to create a pommel, cove, bead, V-groove, and taper.

Great tips for beginners. One of the best learning videos I have seen and I agree with CigarMike on the camera work.

Brian, wow... such good detailed description on your part, you'll be a really good teacher (if u'r not currently in that profes. already). Now if only the camera peson had the same astute common sense to zoom 75% more of the time on those top views, so we could all see the details of the cuts you described so well. Nothing like watching a doctor/surgen operate from 4 or 5 ft. away.

What size skew did you use to create the pommel? I am working with a 4x4 piece of pine and am having issues with splintering. Any general advice? Additional detail, humidity in the shop is at 36-37%, and I am slightly dampening the wood before working (just enough to see a change in color).

Hey Brian...Great video! I don't suppose you could do a video, showing how to drill/bore a 1" hole through, say the spindle in this video or how to drill/bore a 1" hole in a 1.25-1.50 x 10" spindle/spindle blank? Sure would appreciate seeing it done on your lathe...thanks for your time and consideration! DAV

Another point on the camera angle - personally I would prefer to see the work from the operator's point of view, so for me the overhead shots seemed upside-down. Interesting and informative though - thank you!

Excellent video. But one question. Why are you wearing a ring on your finger, especially when you are working with a turning spindle, let alone in a shop. Just an observation.

Nice video -- well done. Not too sure about "nice and straight", though... those 3 words don't usually apply to turning.

Good video and teaching ,But those are dial calipers not vernier .Vernier calipers use a scale more durable and have been around a long time .,good info Thank you.

Whats stopping the tool from being ripped out of your hand and catapulted into your forehead? Genuine question - looks lethal. Also, if you want to make 4 table legs the same width how do you measure that?
@nerferfan
@nerferfan 6 лет назад
"I find it best to use vernier calipers" - shows dial calipers *facepalm* Vernier calipers are calipers with a VERNIER SCALE, not a dial.
@rogerrabbit3879
@rogerrabbit3879 4 года назад
Cutting with the callipers in one hand and the chisel in the other is not safe. Neither is cutting and measuring at the same time. Both of these things are a lack of patience. Techniques like that lead to accidents.
