How To Turn A YELLOW ring WHITE!

In this video I electroplated rhodium on a yellow gold ring, thus essentially "turning" a yellow gold ring into white gold. That being said, this is still a yellow gold ring, just electroplated with a thin layer of white! Rhodium plating will start to wear off over time and the ring will turn back yellow. If someone is looking to have a ring permanently stay white, the best option is to have the ring remade in the desired metal color. White gold rings are also rhodium plated periodically to restore that bright white appearance.

I always think it's cool the the salt of a metal is a much different color than the metal itself. You dip a gold ring into a gold solution to make it white.

Maybe I'm weird but I actually love the color that white gold has when it is not rhodium plated. It looks like what I imagine mithril from Lord of the Rings would look like, that white with a soft yellow glow coming out of it.

My skin chemistry is such that the plating doesn’t last a year for an everyday wear, which is why I got my wedding set in palladium :) so happy with it after over 5 years now

I just had my wedding ring and some other bands replated. The wedding ring is only 2 years old and wasn't that bad at all just a slight gold color showing and only on the underside. My other rings were more yellow but over ten years old in the same area. One was missing a stone. Glad I did my wedding band even though I didn't think it really needed it at the time but it definitely looks a little better. Definitely cleaner lol.

Very interesting to see the process. I had a white gold ring made about 30 years ago, and after a relatively short time hot tub chemicals were discoloring it. It was then rhodium plated, and the tub had no effect on it afterwards.

Diamonds are hard and dont have pores like softer stones would so chemicals dont damage them :)

I was too, but it makes sense, because diamonds are very poor conductors, so the current wouldn't flow through them and attract the rhodium ions.

This was cool. My white gold wedding set was rhodium plated for shine. After our wedding we took the rings in, I think for a loose setting. My engagement ring was replated so that both rings matched in shine and color. It was suggested the rhodium could be done every year but I opted to allow them to wear evenly instead.

Hello fellow jeweler. I noticed under the stone the base of the head and some of the side stone prongs had some yellow. That can be defeated. Small little brush the side stone area, for under the diamond, the ring would have to live in the ultra sonic a few days maybe even some sparex no2 acid. After that it will plate that section as well. For some reason those areas get a small thin layer of build up and grime that is there even after its been cleaned and steamed. Only things that clears is it extra cleaning.

I have had this done to multiple pieces of jewelry and love the new look. I don't wear yellow gold much anymore and had many pieces of jewelry sitting in a drawer unused. I now wear all of the pieces I had rhodium plated. You do need to know that they can only do this with hard stones. If the piece has pearl, coral, opal, etc. in it, the stone will have to be removed so it costs more.

Most opal is lab created now so it holds up just fine in the plating solution as do most stones but yes pearls do need to be removed but they’re mostly in yellow gold settings, I’m not sure about coral though

8:20 I think Rodium plating looks great with some specks of gold in the niiks and crannys. the Rodium is also worn away, so the gold will reveal at flashy areas . Nice

When I first learned of this is when my wedding ring started looking yellow and I thought the jeweler sold us a fake ring when we took it back I was told they had to send it out to have it dipped in rhodium again. While visiting a bunch of local jewelers the past few months (trying to find the right place to get my engagement ring done) my boyfriend and I have been told multiple times that white gold isn’t really a thing and the ring with be yellow gold that is rhodium plated... How do I get a true white gold ring? Is it called something different sometimes? How do I know if a ring they show me is white gold or rhodium plated yellow gold?

The difference is the alloy thats added to it. So 14k wg has the same amount of gold as 14ky, but its the alloys that are different. Rhodium plating is a byproduct of platinum mining and is used as a coating to give it a more platinum type look.

If you can dish out $100 get an ultrasonic cleaner- worth it in my opinion! Just be careful with what stones you put in there, stones like opal will crack from the heat :)

That is the ring my husband chose for me only he got a diamond wedding band that matches the engagement ring band. This just made me all the more certain he should have gotten it in white gold. But I no longer wear it and my boys don't care care.

It varies but I have had rings done from $40-$60 depending on surface area. And depends on value of rhodium at the time.

They are not electric conductors so they don't get affected - it is electroplating so can only work on something which is electrified

White gold is an alloy wich can consist of different metals. In 14K its 585 parts yellow gold and 415 parts white metals. This can be nickel or palladium. With a nickel alloy the white gold tends to look more "yellowish" while the palladium alloy looks more "greyish" nowadays the palladium alloy is more preferable because its more anti allergenic and because the greyish colour is more aesthetically pleasing

The shop where you bought the ring should tell you that you can bring ring once a year fora good sonic clean, repolish and rhodium replate as well as checking stones if there is any.White gold doesn't look good if is not looked after.

I'm thinking of getting a few pieces rhodium plated - they're just silver that oxidizes quickly, even without wearing them and I have to clean them so often! what's your advice, will they stay cleaner and shinier for longer if I get them plated?

You have to get rhodium redipped on rings, usually once a year unless you're rough on them then probably more! This is what we recommend at the jewellery store I work at :)

Avoid chemicals and opt for a polishing cloth when you want to bring shine back to them because traditional jewlery cleaner could wear the plating quicker and also take them off when you wash your hands and sanitize and get the rhodium redone after it wears off

Yes, they can have this done to make it rose gold too. I have an 18k yellow gold ring plated with rose gold. However, the color is not as rich as a solid rose gold and the plating will eventually wear away in time.

@@mjre748 Mostly the rose color depends on solution jewler is using, only few jewelers know how to do your own solution, but its time and material consuming and this way you can just buy a bottle ready to go.

Yea it is a little confusing, but I only rhodium plated a yellow gold ring to show what rhodium can do. You are absolutely correct that white gold is alloyed as white, not yellow. Rhodium is usually reserved for white gold rings to make them even more bright.

anthony bianconi I haven’t done much silver plating actually. I have found that sterling silver has a hard time accepting the new plating without tarnishing
