This is a 30 minute HD video of how to turn Banksia Pods given by Paul MacMenamin of the Long Island Woodturners Association. Set your RU-vid resolution to 1080P and set the scale to full screen for amazing detail!!
Great job!!! I wish we could have seen your cuts better.I pretty much know what you did, however newer turners would appreciate this view! Thank You!!!
A Beautiful piece of turning i think Banksia seed Pods are awesome when you can see them finished, The one i turned exploded i had a catch on one of the holes it was going to be a bud vase it ended being a small candle holder lol. Thanks for sharing. Pete
Here is a cool idea, hollow out a central cavity that breaks into the back parts of the small seed cavities, so you have a hollow form perforated with natural holes, but before that is done you fill each seed cavity with epoxy of different colors...so you have a hollow form studded with little colored windows...then you can put an LED array inside! Put it on a copper pipe or bamboo cane as a lamp stem or arrange many of the same in some weird part see pod part UFO chandelier...Antonio Gaudi would be proud... You could in theory do the same thing with Cholla or even Ashe's Juniper wood, turned or not, but to do that with Banksia pods would be spectacular...
Nice video on using Banksia pods. It would be nice to just add some info on turning speed, tool you are going to use, what “the plan” is, your thoughts on sanding paper. 100, 150, 200, 220, polishing compounds. There were lots of opportunities to teach a bit that went to ground. But, i still learned kind of what to do with the handful of pods i have laying about. Thnks
It's a learning curve for sure. I still can't use it right with the tool standing up. Try using it flat on the tool rest to gain some confidence back then try it standing up.
I wish you guys would explain a lot more so it could be useful:. ie tools being used ,speeds used for different cuts, sanding, etc. Also it would be more useful if you showed the cutting on the tool side so you could see your cutting procedures. You do a great job on turning a nice piece but it doesn't help me much..
Mostly "Found wood" most of my wood I collect after storms. Recently Hurricane Irene and Superstorm Sandy provided a lot of Maple. Also cherry, Walnut. Some I turn green some sits around for a while and gets spalted. For this demo I used Banksia Pod
Good demo but your supposed to put the red tripoli wax on first to buff out the fine scratches then your white diamond wax then carnauba wax as your final polish
