Never got taught how to turn a radiator off so I'm thankful through this video I now know how to turn a radiator off, previously painted my radiator to make it look like brand new but didn't want the heating to effect it since I needed to dry a few tea towels anywho it successfully worked and the radiator is completely off so thankyou so much.
I'm nearly 30, the last one I found useful. Never seen it my life before and thought I'd bleed it if I turned it and envisioned water going everywhere.
I know it seems super basic, but I've just moved to London from Australia - where no heating is really required - and this has had me baffled. So, thankyou!
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! my roommates friend turned on our heater full blast and we have been dying in a super hot room and couldn't figure out how to turn it off. thank you!! You are a life saver
I think for the more modern ones, it's pretty obvious as they have all the numbers on, like Al showed at the start. But for the older types that don't, or for those that are different then this is very useful indeed. Cheers Al!
Thank you!!! I’ve been dreading the winter because the heat is crazy in my bedroom in my old (but new to me) house. I lost my dad very young and there is so much I don’t know. Thank you for picking up the slack, so to speak! 💜💜💜 I wish you the best sir!!!
Perfect, thank you! Helped me identify what the screw one was which is what I have in my new house. Simple, concise and excellently explained. Thank you
Oh thank you so much that third valve system was a nightmare and we always had to stop the heating of the entire house just for one or two rooms...until we found you! Absolutely brilliant thanks.
Thank you so much for taking the time and effort to explain even simple things! - In terms of the different valves, I figured out that all my radiators have at the bottom on one side a simple (non-thermostatic) manual valve and on the other side a Lockshield valve, and on the top one bleeding valve. Now, when draining the central heating system, do I need to fully open all manual and Lockshield valves right from the start, and after a while also open all bleeding valves? - Referring to Lockshield valves, What is their function? Do they simply control how much water exits the radiator? When do they need to be fully closed? If I close them, would then the next radiator down the line not get any hot water? Your answers would help me a great deal, including to figuring out how the three radiators upstairs and the three downstairs in my home are connected to one another.
When you drain the central heating make sure the valves are fully open and after draining for about 10 minutes go around all the radiators and open the bleed valves. Lockshield valves are used to govern down radiators so that you can balance your heating system, so that each radiator gets an even amount of heat. If you close a lockshield valve down then that radiator will not get hot, but of course there would be more heat for the other radiators . Generally the upstairs radiators are just one turn on the lockshields, and fully open downstairs, as the upstairs radiators always steal the most heat from the boiler.
I am a student from germany, making a internship in london and I am really thankfull for your video You made my 6 month stay a lot more confortable because the guys before me didn´t turn it off and I lived in a sauna for the last few days Thank you!
Thankyou! We changed the heater in my room to the last one and I had no idea how to turn it off until this video. Was getting constant migraine due to having hot body and heater being on 24/7. Everyone in my family cold all the time fs. Life saver! Thanks!
Thank you so much for this video! I'm in a travel lodge right now, and the radiator was on full blast in my room, it's so hot. I'm so happy i came across this video, now just waiting for the room to cool down so I can finally go to sleep haha
I'm from California where we don't have these types of heaters - In England this month on holiday in a hot hotel room and this video was a lifesaver! :) Thank you!!
I know you said at the start this was an easy/simple video for some...but bloody hell I sure am glad you made it! I've got the last valve in your video in my house and coming from Australia I had no idea how it worked, I've been dying from heat exhaustion for months now! This was so helpful and very much needed =) thanks again mate!! life saver and absolute legend!
you sir... are awesome, because I'm very plump and my bed sheets are black with little white splodges I absorb A LOT of heat and my radiator is right next to my bed; now I can turn it off! thanks a million man! keep up the good word!
You my sir, are a life saver. I walked in to a pool of water this morning. I have a screw on, as well as a temperature valve, but the temp valve has corroded on it so I have unscrewed the cap as you have shown, so Ive stopped all the water going into this, as plumber not coming til next week. Thank u Frm Sara :)
Thank you for this , the radiators in our house are the last type where you turn them off with pliers , was thinking they never turn off but now i know :)
Thank you! I know nothing about these damn things and ours just started leaking. It was not obvious on how the shutoffs worked as mine just had the screw with the cap/cover. Thank you again! 49 year old guy with ZERO plumbing experience
Thank you! Out of several video's, you are the first one to just say clockwise off - counter clockwise on. I have ones that can't be seen where the off is located. It appears it stops on 1 and 8. Other's have a little square thingy on the bottom with no numbers. I'm either freezing or have steam pissssing out of them.
Yes is quite bad though, so many parents and adults do not teach us simply things we need to know and then act egotistical and disapproving, like this knowledge was somehow gonna float to us out of nowhere, thank god for RU-vid and people who will teach others rather than complain what millennials and others don't know.
As an Asian, I have been sleeping without turning on the heater in my room for 4 days until I accidentally touched the heater in washroom... I thought the central heater would do all the job...
Omg thank you! Mine just span and when I lifted it the radiator came with it, now I know what's under there I knew I could hold the radiator and just pull. I'm 32 and didn't know this, again thank you so much.
Oh, bless you. I didn't realise you could actually turn older radiators off compared to newer ones with obvious numbers on the knob. Small room getting overheated can be cool again without losing all the expensive heat out the window right above it.
THANK YOU! I am a brazilian in the europe winter and there was one of these in my airbnb room and I had no idea how to make it work. In brazil we just have a lot of summer mess.
The basic idea of clockwise off/anti clockwise on may be kids stuff, but the great value of this video to me is the revelation that you can also turn off radiators which have lock shield valves fitted to them. We've just moved into a bungalow which has 6 radiators and the ones in the bathroom and both bedrooms have lock shield valves fitted. Only now, after watching this video, do I realise there's no need to put up with stifling hot rooms you're not using when all you want is to heat the lounge and kitchen (in which the wall thermostat is fixed). TRV's and/or other control valves will, no doubt, eventually be the better way to go .But for now, this will (hopefully) give us much needed control in a situation where I thought there was none - so thanks for that dereton33 👍
Thanks for this most helpful vid, I just moved into a new house recently and for some starnge reason I had all three different types of valves on the various rads, I didn't know whether I was coming or going. Thanks again
Exactly. I've never seen these before and have been freezing. Then all the radiators have different types of those turning number things. Then there's the big valve thing on the opposite side! ahhhhh
Thank You good sir.. An engineer came for a gas check and turned that ordinary valve end off in my bedroom without telling me. For a whole year my bedroom was cold cos I never knew about the left end valve being off.. Until your brilliant video. 👏🏿 👏🏿 👏🏿
Another person who found this helpful. I've actually managed some do it yourself instead of my usual destroy it yourself. Sometimes the simplest things, like the screw in the top of the valve, can turn a daunting task into a very easy one. And what's more, no stupid drum and bass intro!
Hello, Derek your are a legend, in the plumbing world, well done, i found this helpful, i know you think this is simple it is important, i had a leak, and managed, to change a tap, and fix a leak, however it was torture, people often mention that plumbers are expensive, we need them, it is a tough, job, and hard work, i did not enjoy it, that much. It can be very messy as well, sometimes you need a Professional, if you do not try you will never learn. So thanks for your help and support. Avtar Coventry
Great vid Gone are the days where I didn’t know how to turn the radiator off and had to open my windows instead to cool the room (outside temp around 1 degrees) counter productive I know LIFE SAVER
I'm new to UK and I get cold easily and am currently adjusting to the climate, I have the type like the last one, thank you very much for showing me how to use😄👍🏼
Cheers! As an South east Asian living in UK i found this really helpful as I have no clue with how to turn radiators off. 🤦♀️😂 and it is starting to get really hot now.. thanks 👏
Thank you for knowing the difference between clockwise and anti clockwise, unlike some other heating youtubers. If only I had watched your video first...
Thank you for showing how to do both, my radiators are now working & properly & for the first time in weeks my flat is hotter inside, it's-2 here in my part of London
This looks really helpful. My radiator has type 2 valve showed in the video on both sides of the radiator. Which side of the radiator valve do I turn to turn the radiator off?? Many thanks!!!
Have only seen the valves with numbers on before this, so was admittedly thrown by current radiator, especially as said valve was incredibly stiff - just knowing which way to turn it made all the difference!! I can now survive this weird mini-heat-wave we seem to be going through!
Thank you. Mine was stuck but thanks to this I have worked out how to resolve this. Your videos are so informative and you make everything seem so simple.
thank you dereton33 just moved into new flat and radiator was stuck on full blast and i cant sleep with the window open because im on the ground floor. so i disabled the other valve and now its nice and cool the way i like it.
This is great news for s simpleton like me.. I hadn't a clue until I saw your video. I didn't realise how easy it is. Being a bit hot blooded I was sweltering in the heat. Now for a nice cool room at last :-) thanks again. God bless :-)
Thanks for the tip. Philips screwdriver, molegrips, and a washing up bowl underneath the broken/leaking radiator until we get it replaced - panic over . Even though we have a trv valve i needed to close the lockshield valve completely off aswell. Thanks !
This really helped. I had these type of various fittings on various radiators. I had no idea i could turn the ones with screws. Didnt want to loosen the screw ones thinking water would be spraying all over the place. So those radiators are warming now
The basic idea of clockwise off/anti clockwise on maybe kids stuff, but the great value of this video to me was the revelation that you can also turn off a radiator which a
