If anyone is interested in learning skills and tricks with the Swiss Army Knife, then Felix Immler is the guy to learn from. He is the real deal McGyver
I enjoyed his vids so much I immediately purchased his book! It is a really great reas. Some of his other videos are truly amazing, with clever and innovative outdoors tips and hints that are practical and very useful!!
The Fireant would be my first choice personally, because it's an emergency backup and not for primary use. Felix Immler is very interesting to watch because of all the tips he has for the different uses and types of SAK's.
As a carpenter I use the saw all the time. When meeting 2 cuts in a 90degree angle, the saw make it easy to finish the cut so you don't have any over cut.
Victorinox just brought out their own (?) Fireant version. Looks to me that they just bought the thing. Thumbs up for mentioning Felix Immler - he is the Victorinox Bushcraft, tricks and modifications god 😉
As a guy who works construction, would love to see an edc with durable materials…knives, watches, even iPhone cases….I know this could be hard to answer but just a thought of a helpful video
Had the fireflies for two camping seasons and still going strong w/ no breaks in the field. GITD tips are also a bonus if you happen to drop it in a fiddly fire pit. As a backup to a BIC it’s the perfect solution.
I have pocket EDCed my pre hook and pin Swiss Champ for 37 years. It has saved my bacon many times ! I recently got the Fire Fly and the short tinder. I'v never had much use for the tooth pick and I use the tiny screw driver almost every day. PS. If you pocket carry your SAK and don't clean out the pocket lint that it gathers you will have extra tinder.
The pen slot has a slight bend in it to hold the pen in place. Pin hole does the same thing. Because they're steel, it's fine. But a ferro rod is a lot more brittle and might snap if loaded that way. The longer ones are for EvoGrip, I think.
I have the Firefly in my Rambler replacing the toothpick, which is my every day carry. I have the Huntsman for camping and hiking, which has the corkscrew tinder and the glasses screwdriver (I wear glasses) and again the Firefly replacing the toothpick. As you said, not as a primary source of fire.
Resilient hacks has a video where he puts a ferro rod about the size of your broken one in gutted paracord with some jute twine to make a fire starter lanyard. That would be perfect for your Compact.
After watching Felix's videos, I also selected a Huntsman. Prior to that, I saw no use for a couple of the tools, such as the corkscrew and parcel hook. I want to do Felix's mod to the scale to add a toothpick slot for a firefly.
Love videos like this and about Swiss Army knives. Keep them coming! I edc a field master (huntsman but with a Phillips driver instead of corkscrew) absolutely love it!
I am glad that companies are innovating and creating cool products like these. It’s too easy to have a mini bic in your pocket, or if you wanna be advanced, a small ferro rod with a straw tube with tinder inside taped to the rod
I've had my dads Swiss army knife for decades and its a model from the late 70s never had a glasses screwdriver now I need one of those for the cork screw
Finally a replacement for that damn toothpick, lol. And Felix Immler is the SAK Guru in the clip you showed. I love his channel but Best Damn EDC is the one who showed me the toothpick firestarter. Need to get me one of those. Much love to every and all channels. I love gathering information from where ever I can get it. If the World was more like the EDC Community, it would be a better place. Ok, so maybe a bunch of people arguing over the "The Best Steel Ever Is..." It's still better than war.
"There you go! User Error... Broke 2 for that knowledge." -- All I here is Alpine's voice from the GI Joe cartoons... "...and knowing is half the battle!"
I agree the huntsman is a little thick, the camper is almost identical but slimmer and I love to edc that especially after I installed the deep pocket clip
Felix Immler is an absolute legend, but dont you forget the underated Nikos Doulas NikGyver, he is a inspirational hand-on source of tricks (with demonstrations) with whatever tools in the whole Sak range.
A word of warning on the Fire Fly. The ferro rod oxidizes after a while. If you don’t keep it clean it can oxidize so much that it is hard or impossible to remove. I have one knife where the ferro rod can’t come out after the tip broke off.
I bought a pack of the FireFlys a year or more ago and added it to my EDC knife (Trekker, you should check it out is a great knife for utility and EDC been carrying one of them for the past 18 years carried the same one for 16 years). Great little addition, do miss the toothpick a bit though. Broke the first one by not reading the directions :) Love to see some additional DIY and camping content. CtL
I wish that the swiss army knife with the mini butane torch worked out, I would have had one of it worked well but I think a majority of them broke. Could have been a big success
Would love more content like this and different and new and creative uses for a SAK either for everyday stuff but more so survival. I have the huntsmen lite and I carry it everyday along with my Spyderco Shaman 🤟🏽
8:59 If one is in a survival scenario, who the hell cares how much it costs? This then translates into preparation for situations which might escalate into a survival scenario, so if you want to be prepared, part of that preparation is funding the kit you need to survive. The last thing you want is to end up being compromised because you "saved" $2,12 on a purchase of something that could have saved your life, but instead, broke!
That’s pretty cool dude, I love the outdoor/ survival gadgets and gizmos.. I’ve wasted a good amount of money on some of it and I’m still addicted 😂 I need to stay far, far away from stores like rei because I have a spending problem. Eh perhaps it’s more of a not enough money problem ha.
Fire steel for the corkscrew is too small. You can’t get good sparks from it. Not to mention during the winter, when your hands get cold it it can be hard to grip. The corkscrew fire tinder is good but breaks down easily if you use a Swiss Army knife as your edc. The firefly fire steal is great. It throws great sparks. I have a review of it over on my channel if you want to check it out.
I haven't even watched the video as I write this comment, however I wanted to be the first person to comment. I have no doubt this will be a Damn good video :)
100 fires started? For that cost you could buy 100 lighters! Seriously I've never liked any of these, as they require giving up a good tool for a pretty crap one. A modded scale to take a fero rod without removing existing items would be reasonable. As sold however pass.
I'm not trying to be mean, but I don't understand how you do a video like this and NOT know what you're doing before filming. This product is not really a new thing, but nevertheless it could have been described in seconds. A 12-minute video to make people aware of a product which you haven't even read the instructions for is not a good look.
