I surf a 9'6". I always put some wax on the rails near the nose end but not at the nose. For me it helps gripping the board through the turtling maneuver. I've also found that depending on where your position is in the breaking wave I've found it helpful to pull the nose slightly under so when the wave breaks on top of you you can use some of the wave's energy hitting the tail end to help thrust you out the back. Of course, then there's those times where you think you're doing everything right but the wave rips the board right out of your hands and you go through a tumble in the washing machine.
Thanks for the tips. I've been surfing a long time but only just switched to longboarding. I'm not a big guy and found it a real handful to get out back 😄 The feeling of glide is unreal on the waves though. Wish I did it years ago!!
Great video. Everything always sounds cooler with an Aussie accent. I’m from California but sometimes while surfing talk like an Aussie just to add some spice to my life.
turtling helped me learn to surf and get out the back on big beach break days. actually caught one while doing it. all of a sudden i was flipped over headed back to the beach on my knees!
So happy that I found your channel as a beginner I thought I’d need a new nose to learn to surf! Very easy to understand with your voice and wordings, simple or lower music volume makes it less distracting which is really good! Thank you Ruby
One more tip on the Pop Over: if you pull the board straight down into the water as you sit on it just before the wave comes, it will rebound and lift you up and over the wave. I have got it down so that I pull very hard down on the board and then keep my body up towards the nose as it pops up out of the water an over the wave. I have been surprised by how big a wave this has worked on. At least twice the size of what you see here.
This is a really good guide, I need to be reminded of the basics every once in a while. A quick question - what's the song in the background called? Chilled tunes!
but what i can do when a bigger wave with much energy comes to me… in which angle i have to push my board forward? sometimes it works but the last time the waves caught me… 😅
What is the best technique for big waves. I imagine both the punch through and glide over will be impossible. But can the turtle roll work for 2 meter waves?
No that's the problem with turtle rolling. It won't work for anything above like 2 meters. Even 2 meters is a stretch. You will definitely get pummeled underneath the waves.
Yeah, its a challenge. I agree - both techniques will have to be pretty perfect to survive bigger waves if at all. Otherwise. I try and strategise my paddle out. Paddling hard in between sets and occasionally copping one on the head when its unavoidable.
Hi Ruby! Sometimes when I try to turtle roll I feel myself (and my board) get hit by the wave and carried quite far towards the shore, sometimes, I get caught up in the turbulence and get tossed around. What am I doing wrong and how do I fix it?
The technique in this video only work with small waves. With more powerful waves you need to position your body vertical below the water, forming a 90° angle with your board.
Andrew Stavrou hey Bro 🤙🏽 so it’s Not my Video but I can still answer you. A longboard has a lot of volume so you can’t push it underneath the water with a duck dive. For a duck dive you need a smaller board more like a short board or something like that size. Aloha
@@MrTakeLP Thank you for the answer bro, much appreciated. I'm just getting into surfing out in the UK. Seeing older surf videos, longboarders are surfing pretty big waves. How do they paddle out back in massive surf? Even if they time the set end perfect and paddle like crazy it is still difficult. Any help would be appreciated bro. Cheers from London
@@Rolothe1st most often, when you see longboarding in huge surf, it is somewhere where there's a channel, like a reef or point break. Surfers essentially paddle out around the breakers. Big surf on a longboard at a beach break can be next to impossible. Turtle roll, time the sets to paddle through during a lull, and look for a rip current to help you. Stay stoked!
There is no physical way I have enough weight to sink a board with so much volume so unfortunately I am unable to do that (most people are unless they are super large with thin longboards) This is a 9'1 not sure of other measurements sorry as they have faded on the board
Try to avoid white water specially big white water waves there will be easier openings that have yet turned to white water water which is much easier to get through without being pushed back
Like almost all videos it shows the turtle roll in relatively small waves - but the difficulties start when a shoulder to head high wave is coming toward you almost breaking - it doesn´t work like that in big surf, the white wash will just rip that board out of your grip
