Are you guys doing remote learning or taking online classes? Is it harder for you to understand what you're learning without being in the classroom? Let me know what's working and what's not working for you! =) Thanks for watching and thanks for the love xo Katie

As a college professor, I’ve found it works when I teach my students actual active reading strategies. I especially recommend the Feynman technique and active recall. Summaries definitely help, too, but I usually recommend a combination of strategies. These strategies help them build neural pathways as they actively learn new content and actively learn how to learn.
@krishn881
@krishn881 3 года назад
Active Recall is the worst study method to date. It is strictly short term memory. Do not be fooled by the studies, Active Recall is not a valid study strategy for a university course. Only use Active Recall for am extremely narrow area. For example, if you are learning Physics, use Active Recall ONLY for the equations. Remember, Active Recall is very bad. Your memory of a topic could even last only 30 seconds. Therefore you must be memorising those equations daily.

It’s super common to have other, distracting thoughts while you read. You could try to quickly write those other thoughts down on a piece of paper the minute they pop into your head, and then get back to reading. Maybe use a piece of blank paper as your bookmark for this purpose? Once you write it down, your brain won’t work so hard trying to remember it, so you’ll be able to focus on the reading again. Sounds weird, but I personally do this and it can work.

If you do not understand the words you read you will not be able to write a summary because you do not understand it in the first place. Solution: look any word you do understand and clear the meaning in context.

Sorry you make things complex. I found some advise given by ISRO scientist 1. read slowly decrease pace. 2. make mind map notes (no paragraph notes) when you understand the concept side by side. 3. try to relate thing with real life. 4. Use revision formula (1,7 and 30) revsion next day, next week and end of month.

What if you don’t understand what you read?
@SchoolHabits
@SchoolHabits 2 года назад
Hi there! There’s a few steps to consider if you’re really not understanding what you read: 1) is the material actually too difficult for you? 2) is there somewhere else you could get the same information that’s explained in a less complicated manner? 3) if you have to read it, and you have no choice, then you’ll have to read very slowly… More slowly than you want to. 4) be prepared to look up words in the dictionary as you come across things you don’t understand. 5) know that you don’t have to understand 100% of what you read in order to get information from it. If you understand somewhere around 75% of what you’re reading, you should be OK for most situations. 6) read only a few sentences or small paragraphs at a time. Try to summarize the main argument and write it down in the margins. Yes this takes some time, but it makes you think about what you’re reading and forces you to make sense of it in order to summarize it. 7) keep going. The more you practice this, the better you’ll get at it.💕

@@SchoolHabits are you sure this gone help me out. The thing is that I am preparing for exam which having higher level of reading comprehension and because I don't understand the meaning of some word my mind get distract.
@SchoolHabits
@SchoolHabits 4 года назад
@@someshgautam9470 You can try it! It works for me. And it works for a lot of students. Nothing will work overnight - usually it takes some time to perfect our study methods. But if you're getting distracted from what you're reading because the vocabulary is hard, then you will probably have to look up the words you don't know. You don't have to know the definition of every single word, but if there are a lot of words you don't know then you won't understand what you're reading - and then you will then zone out. If you're getting distracted because the reading is just boring, then put your phone away, take notes on the text, go somewhere quiet, stop reading every once in a while to write summaries of the paragraphs (like I go over in this video), and keep a piece of paper near you to write down any thoughts that are distracting. =0)

It doesn't seem to work ,is it because of not using this technique properly.?? How can we write a summary in 1/2 sentences of a paragraph.?
@SchoolHabits
@SchoolHabits Год назад
Summarizing can be difficult. We often want to paraphrase (re-word the author’s words) instead of summarizing. Paraphrasing is easier but doesn’t work as well. If it’s a long paragraph, your summary might be a full sentence or a few fragments put together… just do your best to be concise.

What about having adhd
@SchoolHabits
@SchoolHabits 3 года назад
Hi there - so the strategy is the same whether you have ADHD or not. So you would still read a chunk of text (a paragraph, a larger chunk, or a page ... depending on how dense the material is) and then pause to write a quick 1-2 sentence summary in the margins. You don' have to use full sentences though ... just bullet points are enough. ADHD tip: If you find yourself zoning out while reading a chunk of text, it can sometimes be helpful to use a simple visual marker that shows your stopping points. For example, if you're reading one paragraph at a time, simply draw a think line (or an arrow or something) between each paragraph to indicate to your brain each of your stopping points. It's a simple trick, but it can really work.

Great vidio 👍 I have ADHD and it’s really difficult for me to understand what I’m reading when I’m ready it’s like I never read it I can read it 10 times and it’s like what did I just read I’ve failed 2 work keys test for a promotion I have a test I’m a month I was wondering if you do Tutor lessons
@SchoolHabits
@SchoolHabits 2 года назад
Hey Andrew! Sounds super frustrating, and I know exactly what you’re talking about. A few strategies you could try: 1) blocking: use a blank notecard (or something similar) while reading to block out all the text below the line you’re reading. Slowly move the card down to uncover each line as you read. 2) if you’re reading something something online, try copying +pasting the text into a Google or Word document and changing the font to something you prefer. This is time consuming but can be super helpful. 3) Read a few sentences at a time and then try to explain it to someone else. (Even if there’s no one else there, summarize it out loud.) I usually recommend doing this after each paragraph, but you can also do it after every 2 to 3 sentences if you’re having a hard time. 4) make sure you’re doing your reading when you feel alert. Sometimes we sit down to read at the end of the day when we’re too exhausted to focus. 5) i’m not sure if you take medication for your ADHD, but if you do, make sure you have the timing down. Take your meds before you have large amounts of reading to do. Yes I offer private tutoring, but I am booked solid for the next year!! Crazy, I know!🤪
