How to unjam filament in AMS unit of Bambu Lab X1 Carbon

So ‪@BambuLab‬ said that TPU will not work with their AMS unit as it will get jammed and stuck in it. I wanted to know if it was a hard no or just a suggestion. Spoiler, it's a hard no for any soft TPU (Even 95A).
So here is a guide on how to unjam filament that gets stuck in the AMS unit. It's thankfully not a difficult process but it can be kind of tedious.

I just had a piece of PLA break off right at the edge of the funnel, so I couldn't grab it to pull it out. This video is VERY well made, and helped me clear the broken piece in the AMS in minutes!

@@MinWin3D I'm curious if using Capricorn XS tubing would help here. That spiraling is caused by the TPU compressing inside the tubing instead of pushing forward. XS tubing might prevent that (similar to how it helps with bowden setups).

@@jaydefizzle so I actually spent a fair bit on Capricorn XS tubing to replace not just all the AMS tubing but on the X1 as well. Btw make sure you cut them exactly the same length as the original, learned the hard way 😅 Unfortunately, it didn’t solve the problem & in some cases it actually ended up cause a good bit of friction in areas where a tight bend was occurring so I had to remove them later on.

Wow, this is *exactly* what I needed! Some crap PLA snapped when the AMS went to retract it, and I was like “where do I begin?” This was super clear and helpful. (What a PITA though, I think I’m gonna avoid cheap PLA going forward 😕)

Same! Weird because PLA spool is new from Bambu and came with the X1C printer.

Dude I had the case where a filament was stuck right inside the filament splitter, I did not know I had to press the "thing" to allow filament passage to unstuck everything. It is explained nowhere, even after having spent time on other videos and tutorials. Please take this high praise !! Have a wonderful day, no matter where you are !!

I see I'm not the only one that thinks like this. For what it's worth, Bambu Lab does say 55D and harder TPU filaments can be used in the AMS. I figured going a few steps softer wouldn't be so bad... Thanks for helping me figure out how to undo the error.

Thanks. I had a broken off piece of PLA stuck in PTFE tube #4 and this video helped me to find and remove it. I didn't disconnect the 2 wires inside, just stood it upright while finding the jam.

phew -- apparently I had some very old and brittle PLA that snapped off and stuck in the hammer (in fact, it snapped off in two other places as I was trying to get it out). You pressing down the hammer to free the filament is what finally showed me how to get the last bit out, thanks!

Some brittle PLA broke on me at the PTF tubes (Slot 1). Red LEDs and all. I just sent a ticket to Bambu labs, but then watched your video and resolved the problem. I'll cancel my ticket and get back to my project. Thank you VERY much! :)

It's a soft no. TPU 98A works fine with the exception of any brand of White I've tried. For some reason, it's notably more flexible than the others. 95A or less - hard nope. Godd instructions! Thanks...

Thank you! I did choose to try TPU when Bambu said not to so it's entirely my fault hence no reason to get mad plus I was surprised how it wasn't as complicated as I thought to fix

I know they say TPU doesn't work in the AMS but after taking apart the whole thing I don't think that would have to stay that way. There is a drive wheel under the AMS and that's where mine keeps getting stuck, I think it's the various drive motors not operating in sync with each other causing the problem. Possibly a firmware update to alter its behavior for soft filament might help.

Thanks for the video. I had to disassemble the hotend twice because of this. PETG, 250°C hotend 90°C bed. The piece I removed were looking squished. Most probably it did not have enough cooling time. Just a thought, in the gcode of the filament change rhere must be a pause of maybe 5s-10s until the filament cools down so it's not soft anymore.

Thanks this is what worked for me! A filament spool was cross threaded and was always getting stuck, so i just cut it ;( then it got stuck. this video helped.

hard TPU from extrudr worked fine for month, until now ... thx for the video ;) hard tpu with carbon is even stiffer and hasn't failed. edit: only had to remove the back ptfe tube and managed to pull it out.

I got lucky and was able to canx the error then cut the filament about 5" above the feed and selected 'unload" while I gently pulled on the filament. This was Overture matte black PLA that got stuck.

They really should have made the bottom removable to access the PTFE tubes to clear them from a jam or broken filament section floating around in the small tube section. No fussing with the two short wires and no taking the whole thing apart. Its a royal PAIN.

That is great to know. Thanks for putting the video together. Any idea how to fully clean the filament feeding wheel? They say canned air but mines pretty caked on and cant find any decent literature or vids on it 😅.

So the front unit which "feeds" the filament is actually removeable since the whole unit can be replaced. So I just pop out the unit and use something with a fine point to clean out the grooves.
