Hi! That's my very first RU-vid video. In this Channel I will try to bring my experiences in trying to repair, mod, hack, but mostly and unfortunately ending up breaking old, retro, vintage electronics, musical instruments and other archaic stuff. :)
In this first one I would like to share my experience Modding my 1990 #Sega Mega Drive / #Genesis VA6 revision - Japanese Model 1, to enable the all regions select through a on-off-on switch, soldered to the board.

Bom vídeo. Só uma crítica (construtiva): você deveria mostrar no multímetro qual é o ícone de continuidade. Eu por exemplo não tenho tanto conhecimento com ele 😅 No mais, excelente vídeo. Eu fiz a mesma modificação no meu mega japonês 3 anos atrás. Talvez dê p Fazer no Mega? Bom trabalho esse vídeo

Boa noite Denis, tudo bem ?

What is the purpose of the resistors in this mod?
@BocaRetroGames
@BocaRetroGames 4 года назад
Hi Abel! 1st of all Tks for watching! The author of this mod explained to me that he recommends the use of resistors there because it's not good practice to leave any signal fluctuating in digital electronics. That's why he uses the two 10k resistors work in Pull-Up mode when the switch is turned off in Americas mode (middle). Here he explains better but it's Portuguese only m.facebook.com/neto.esrael/posts/1841196492674037 Sorry if I didn't make any clear with my explanation, but For what I understood it's only good practice, and it should work without them . ;)
@BocaRetroGames
@BocaRetroGames 4 года назад
I also recommend Jan Beta's video on this mod. It's the same approach but he implements 2 switches instead of 1, which gives 1 more option compared to mine, which is Region Pal / Language Japanese . Here's the link ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-n-9uD4qrdQo.html

If you are still insisting on using original Genesis / Mega Drive hardware and you are wanting to play imports, then all you need is a Game Genie. Go to the awesome website gamehacking.net and they have Game Genie, PAR codes for practically every console that you can think of. Including codes to circumvent the region lockout found in the software for the Genesis / Mega Drive and they definitely work.
@BocaRetroGames
@BocaRetroGames 4 года назад
Thanks for the info ! I've not mentioned, but I used those GameGenie codes to unlocked almost all Roms that have any region lock, so I could play them all on my Japanese locked va1. I also uploaded this pack of unlocked Roms somewhere back in 2015, but I don't remember where now. If I find I'll post it later. Thanks for watching

Hacking the ROM with a Game Genie won’t change the frequency though, right?

Yet another Japanese VA6 with “AV Intelligent Terminal High Grade Multipurpose Use” printed on top. No idea why people keep saying that you won’t get the TMSS trademark boot screen with that printed on top because you certainly will. Even Ace’s thread is wrong about this. They never updated the OP though they acknowledge it much later in the thread.
@BocaRetroGames
@BocaRetroGames 2 года назад
Hello there, tks for commenting. In my experience all va5 and va6 have the TMSS screen. Unfortunately this console has a issue now as its VDP is dead. I'm searching for a vdp to replace it. The VA4 from my Resurrection videos has also died but that one I've never found the culprit... Now I'm currently gaming on a va1 which has some incompatibilities issues with some games when using everdrive and also a va7 which is the worst model 1 version
@emmettturner9452
@emmettturner9452 2 года назад
I should say “…you certainly [can]” instead of “…you certainly will” since it was only the VA6 that had TMSS. My JP MD was found in Thailand with a PAL RF mod. It had the “AV Intelligent Terminal High Grade Multipurpose Use” printing but it was a VA6. Then, there’s yours… and then there’s Retro Recollections with another VA6 with the same printing in his “A Mysterious Japanese Mega Drive” video. There’s yet another from Retro Tinker / Tech Tinker in his “USA Region Cartridges On Japanese Mega Drive” video. It seems that the vast majority of JP consoles with the printing but without the R logo are VA6 which runs completely counter to the hardware variant guide everyone follows from Ace. Also, it seems that missing the R logo but retaining the printing just means VA5 or VA6. Without the printing it’s VA6 or VA7, just like a Genesis without “High Definition Graphics” printed on top. Unlike the non-HDG Genesis you can’t tell by looking at the power connector or EXT port but you can look at traces through the vents (JP consoles have no shielding). VA7 looks completely different.
@emmettturner9452
@emmettturner9452 2 года назад
@@BocaRetroGames Yeah. VA5 and VA6 are the exact same board with the only other difference being the chip that populates IC4. The chip with TMSS is the 315-5433 and the one without TMSS is the 315-5402. The PCB has a legend with both part numbers designating one VA5 and the other VA6. My guess is that they were already working on an updated IC4 when their spat with Accolade happened and TMSS was developed along side or worked in. The chip without TMSS was already in production so they designed the board to accept both. Even if they had a bunch of the chips for VA5 they could go on randomly using them until they were gone because even having some VA6 TMSS consoles in the mix was enough to trip up unlicensed competitors like Accolade.
@BocaRetroGames
@BocaRetroGames 2 года назад
Yes, the only difference is the IC4, but on the va6 we also have the IC8 315-5313A which I don't know if it's compatible with the ic4 from the va5. I'm trying to buy the vdp ic8 from a va5 to replace the dead on from my va6, but I'm not sure if I will have to grabe also the ic4 from the same va5 board, would you know that ? Thanks again
@emmettturner9452
@emmettturner9452 2 года назад
@@BocaRetroGames I have some VA6 with 513-5313 and some with 513-5313A at IC8 so I always assumed it was a drop-in replacement VDP. Probably a change in the process technology or something to reduce jailbars. I actually have two non-HDG VA6 Genesis consoles open in front of me and one has 315-5313 and the other has 315-5313A. The first is Made in Taiwan and the other is Made in Japan so there are a few differences like the color of the board and the labels underneath. That said, the Made in Japan non-HDG VA6 Genesis with 315-5313A has a strange issue: It can only cold-boot. Wait for it to get warm and power-cycle and it will just give you a blank screen. It will only boot again after an extended cool-down period proportional to how close it was to being fully warmed up. It’ll seemingly run forever if you cold boot and don’t power-cycle. It also seems to only boot certain games if I don’t try stuff like the 32X terminator block. Sonic 3 just doesn’t work without stuff like that. What’s weird is that Sonic 3 will work if I boot with the terminator then quickly turn off, remove it, and boot again… provided I didn’t let it get warm. This is extra annoying because I did not discover it before doing a 3BP V2 Triple Bypass and capacitor job so now I owe the owner another. This is why I have two open simultaneously. He had just bought it before sending it to me so it still has the retailers “tested” warranty sticker and everything. Too bad I didn’t discover this before voiding that warranty. It’s difficult to catch without a full burn-in which is what I usually do AFTER my work (quick test, work, then burn-in test). My Mate Vince had a repair lot where the first one he tested could have had the same issue yet he concluded that it worked fine.
