This Old House general contractor Tom Silva shows how to beautify an old, ugly brick fireplace. (See below for a shopping list and tools.)

Tom helped a homeowner update his old fireplace by installing a new custom-built wooden mantle and polished granite hearth. With the old mantle removed, Tom removed some of the bricks at the top of the fireplace with a hammer and chisel to make room for the new mantle. Next, he removed the hearth tiles to make room for the granite. Tom then laid mortar onto the hearth as a setting bed for the new granite. While the mortar was drying, the homeowner cut and installed the granite pieces for the hearth and surround. He used a special construction adhesive to hold the marble in place. To fasten the mantle to the wall, Tom screwed wooden cleats to the wall's framing. He then used finish nails to secure the mantle to the cleats.

Amy Simmonds It is true, I prefer original work over modern stuff. That isn't to say there is not modern stuff that can't work with old stuff though ^.^

I agree. I think it would've looked nice with a thick cedar mantel on top of the brick. The shiny black granite with the white just doesn't look right together and I think in 20 years it will look aged rather than timeless. That's just my stuffy sense of home design, though :)

Amy Simmonds My favorite architecture pieces are usually Queen Annes... so wood work is a definite plus. Especially when it hasn't been painted over 5-20 times lol.

Totally! People have been selling French provincial furniture around here but the house I'm buying is from the 50s so I can hold back my lust some :)

Well then you know a concrete column is different. Thats just the easiest way to put it for people who dont know. Im a Carpenter and even we dont use the term pilaster that often.

When they were filling the hearth 'pit' with concrete and making it even w/ the top of the wood floor... I was thinking WTH??? Why not make the top of the new granite flush with the top of the hardwood floor??? That would eliminate the trip hazard and might even look good. Just noticed that the original brick hearth was up above floor by 3/4" as well: - (. Regardless I LOVE TOMMY & TOH!!! Thanks for the video!!!

Brick was better. Now it looks like something from a funeral home. Still, great craftsmanship from Mr. Silva.

Precisely should have cleaned up the brick and added a hardwood mantle would have been gorgeous- the black granite??

What the hell? Pull out an original, attractive, unique and perfectly functioning mantel and replace it with oh so trendy this year black granite and plywood? Is this what "Old House" is about now? Sickening. Why not rip all that ugly original trim out and replace it with some nice MDF faux Colonial skinny moulding? The people at Home Despot should really like that.

Doesn't code ask for a minimum 2" clearance to combustibles?
@johnvgig
@johnvgig Год назад
National fire code is 6" from edge of firebox to combustibles, plus additional distance , equal to the projection, if wood mantel protrudes more than 1-1/2". So here, they tevessed the mantel the width and height of the face black marble. Don't know what that dimension is.

I gave it a thumbs down because they really did not give any pictures of the finished product... The lighting was not good so you really have no way of admiring the end product. Another 15 seconds of video would have made the video a thumbs up !!!! BTW this is typical for these home improvement shows which (at the end of the project) flash through the end product... duh.........................

Wtf? Why replace something unique and original with a mass produced faux colonial surround that doesn't even match the rest of the trim in the house? It's called This OLD House.
