For me the power connector was the hardest to remove omg and to everyone who hasn't done this yet BE REALLY CAREFUL opening the case it will easily dent if you force it open try to keep the pick to open it as straight as possibly or as less of an angle as possible

Thanks for this dude. Perfect pacing. I feel like we’re friends now after watching that 10 times. Has to use a MicroSD for the boot to actually work. The second micro SD I tried too, first didn’t work, and the usb 3.2 (C) drive didn’t work either, weird. Thanks again man

As a little aside for anyone as lucky as I am - if you run into the "1 second remaining" ad nauseum... try holding the power button for 10 seconds until you hear a beep to restart, then when it comes back on change to a 2.4GHz wifi. Worked fine for me after doing that. Thanks for the great video!

nice mentioning its just shipping mode, not joking you are one of the best steam deck RU-vidrs (among Phawx and Cryobyte) as you have some actual knowledge to offer unlike most other big channels just ramble on garbage stuff repeatedly. Your lutris video especially, I can now add basically any old games and will eventually work thanks to it.

A thousand thanks for this in-depth tutorial. I’m planning to get a Steam Deck for a special occasion, and I want to replace the 64GB SSD with a 2TB SSD. Hopefully, this will go well enough. Edit: The operation was a success! The SSD has been replaced and the thermal paste has been cleaned off and replaced with PTM7950.

@@Androbench I was replacing the paste with a thermal pad (the PTM7950, in this case). You're supposed to scrub it off with 99% isopropyl before putting it on.

@@Androbench Yep. It's a phase change material, meaning that it won't pump out onto the hardware as it heats up, making it run cooler and results in the fan running at lower speeds due to lower stress on the thermals. It will also return to normal after it cools off.

Removing that screw from the metal shield looks so easy in your video. I had to capitulate. It just wouldn't budge and i may now have rounded it a little...The screwdiver perfectly fitted but it the screw is so tight that it won't come off....

Hello, i ripped half the sticker on rf shield and i left the other half after replacing the ssd. Does anyone know what is the function of the sticker and if i should/could replace it with something else. Ie copper sticker or something?

I'm on the last screw for the backplating but it got stripped even while using a #0 screwdriver, a flat screwdriver isn't woring. I've tested putting a rubberband between the tip and the screw, tested tape but nothing seems to work

When trying to install the metal plate back on (after installing the SSD), there was a small electric spark which came out from the wires, near the fan (more specifically the black wire near the metal plate main screw), also the power button flashed here for a second (eventhough I did not press it). How serious is this? I mean I was able to install it back, reimaged the steam deck, and everything seems to be fine. How to check if everything is actually fine ?

Im using a Mac and every time I try to flash the steams recovery image it always says over 800-1000 minutes, am I doing something wrong or is my flash drive usb not formatted correctly? NVM, had to extract the steams recovery image before flashing, and then use that extracted file and now its like 10 minutes I feel like this should be mentioned when using a Mac

Thanks for the detailed tutorial. In other tutorials I've watched, putting it in battery storage mode from the setup utility wasn't covered, is that really a necessary step?

Not necessary as you'd unplug the battery anyway, but it helps prevent turning on the device if you accidentally press the power button.

hey, i have a lil question about the OS part. is it possible to simply connect the original 64gb from the steam deck as a secondary drive to the pc and copy its files to one of my other drives, then connect the new 512gb and copy the OS files? theoretically it seems logical

if you dont want to start from new, you're better off cloning the ssd. for some reason it didnt work for me. new ssd was empty when loading it on so here i am trying to do it this way. getting no progress flashing though

on desktop mode, open steam settings > storage > click the drive at the top and click Add Drive then add your sdcard

When i download the steam recovery image file. it downloads as a BZ2 format. When i dragged and dropped it into etcher, it could read the bz2 file. Then after i extracted out the image file from the bz2 file, and drop the image file instead then only etcher able to flash to my drive. Is there a concern for this?

I used Rufus to write the image to USB. Balena Etcher for Windows estimated 400 hours to write the image....

Trying to flash my USB drive, it's ETA us 464 minutes on a USB 3 drive. When I tried unzipping the recovery image FIRST and trying from there, it went fast but it apparently was also corrupted and didn't allow me to get steam OS back on my deck.
