Agreed on this one some of the other tutorials talk alot and dont actuallly show every step or assume you know what they are talking about. This is great for a visual learner such as myself.
In case someone else has this issue. 3 times I swapped the cable between the adapter and dvd drive and each time the yellow light would flash and chimp wouldn’t detect the new drive but after cursing it out and checking solutions online I come back to find it was apparently just going Extremely slow and ended up booting on its own after sitting at the chimp press A screen. So if you are having this issue wait for 5-10 minutes and see if it auto detects the drive before you curse it out lol.
I second this. Chimp was stuck on the "press A" screen for like 10 minutes after I pressed A. I was ready to give up and TSOP until I read this comment!
@@JOSEPHZZ123honestly it’s been a long time since I messed with it after that hard drive upgrade. I had issues with it like I stated above but after it sitting it fixed itself. I also had issues with the traces for booting and power that started acting up after all the modding was done. Not sure if I’m reading your comment right but if it’s shutting down after you press A and not doing anything you might have other problems like the Chimp program or maybe the system itself. Let me know specifics if I can I’ll try to help better.
Appreciate you my man, was just getting back into the OG Xbox with the release of insignia and noticed the stock 8GB hard drive has room for a whole (1) game installed before being filled up lol. Looks like I found my next weekend project 🥳
Just a FYI: if you have a modded Xbox with a bigger HDD (I had 320GB) and are upgrading to an even larger one (I am with 2TB) Chimp is stupid and treats all of your free space as space it “has to move” taking hours upon hours to do so. Get yourself an IDE PC reader and clone the drives on there to save yourself a huge headache.
The first time I did the clone it was fast, then I wanted to do it again with different settings and then it was really slow (1 hour from stock to a 250gb ssd)
Dude, this guide was awesome! Just used it to mod my OG Xbox, and worked perfectly! But man, that 80 pin cable management was a pain lol. Thanks for the awesome guide man!
Same thing was happening to me and I noticed the original Xbox hard drive jumper was set to "cable select". Switching it to "master" resolved the issue
Thanks Again! "Back in My Day" was Pre-Rocky Mod Tool. Fundamentally its the same, just a few different tools to complete the process: I really want to check out the new Dashboard. I always set mine to blood XBMC with a Xbox 360 Blade theme
@@MotownBatman I literally just now jailbroke my old ps3 slim. Took only a hour. When ever i get some money man im gonna do it to this og xbox. The og xbox is so fuckin cool man. I had no idea you could do this. My hard drive was starting to go. And my cd rom has been acting funky too. Thought i was gonna have to buy a new xbox but now theres just no need.
@@endstarofficial same here, been having this issue for 2 days. Xbox immediately freezes after I perform the hot swap with a known compatible 2tb hdd. Tried letting it sit on the dash and in chimp loader as well.
So to retiterate what said below, seems my IDE cable has to be in super tight or issues, both old 40 wire one and new 80 wire Im trying...finally got it to work and bending the new 80 wire from link is nightmare- plus my SATA adapter has big molex splitter hanging off unlike yours, along with splitter I need for LCD temp monitor- ohh boy I dread putting this back. But issue now, I go to do chimp loader and...Xbox turns off. This is my 1.0 remember, I think its something I remember about needing composite cables hooked up?! Bizzare as sounds, I use high def component/SPDIF cable...gotta try and find old shitty cables now, hope thats issue.
Hello. I tried the whole guide step by step. I'm using an SSD Sandisk 3D 1TB. But when going to boot it shows black screen. I'm using the same 80 pin wire and the same startech adapter. It boot the xbox normal intro and then goes "bright black screen" (no dark black screen). Any suggestions please? Thank you.
I still use one of my 3 OG Xbox's I got for dirt cheap, fixed up. My fav is a 1.0, I replaced super capacitor, thermal pasted CPU and GPU, cleaned all out, replaced a Thompson DVD drive, even cut out front panel and put in a LCD with temp probe to display CPU temp on front- then painted my Camaro/Musicman Petrucci color chaning mystic teal as cherry on top. She's my fav w CoinOPs and 12,000 games I FTP'ed over (some fan translations, I made TON of XBE movie previews, every console represented possible on Xbox emus). I love it n poured countless hours in- but lately it'll get this service Xbox screen sometimes that needs multiple restarts to rid- think the 320GB WD I installed is going (hear it whirring too before error)- so I'm kinda nervous about doing this upgrade- but will give it a go later this week and try your method (It's been years since I softmodded my XB, PSP, Wii- I forgot so much!) EDIT: Ignore my dumb ?, of course original xbox was IDE, so IDE->SATA cloning will work fine!
How big are these game files. And, like how demanding is it on your internet to ftp over game files. I have satellite internet lol. I get a good 5mb per sec download speed lol. Can you put in like a actual game disc and download it to your harddrive
@@Donald_Dump420 ftp doesnt use any internet. it takes place on your internal network. it will be throttled by the speed of the hdd/lan adapater in the xbox before anything else on a modern setup
Any tips on routing the power cable using the startech sata to ide adapter? You use a different one than the one in your link and i am having hard time getting top back on because of how lengthy and bulky the power cable is. When i plug power from motherboard it doesnt give me any good routing options
So I learned a few things that may help someone else, 1. If you use a 3rd party controller, chimp freezes. 2. I used a different IDE2SATA and it did not work, the one in the video did work.
If you would like to save a DVD and not have to make sure it boots properly like I (for some reason encountered) a great workaround is to download the rocky5 tools disc as described in the video, but extract it and FTP the Chimp directory to E:\apps\ on your Xbox if coming from a modded Xbox. And from there simply booting up the Xbox with the hookups prepared and setup as described in this video, run the app, then swap to the (new drive) from the DVD drive on the cable mentioned in this video when the app says to do so, and it will clone your first original drive to your upgrade drive. Easy peasy, lemon squeazy.
@@smokintoomuchsalt406 so ive managed to find a non iso file of it but when i booted it, it would boot back to the main menu. I've read somewhere that you need it on a disc so it can boot back from the disc or something like this (at least for a softmoded one). I found a burnt disc i had from years ago and the software launched however i had an error saying it can't find some sectors or something like that on my other drive so i abandoned and im trying a hardmod with a raspberry pico.
@@Stweak well dang I might be SOL if I cant FTP it over. Thanks for the response. Ill be sure to give an update if I’m able to make it work. I have all the tools needed arriving later this week.
I’ve tried every way I can think of to go about this but no matter what I do as soon as I fully plug the IDE cable into the Startech adapter it shorts and the Xbox shuts off. I got it done one time but Chimp couldn’t unlock the hard drive or I would have done it the first time. Anyone else have this issue?
Hey I’m having trouble with my v1.6 softmodded xbox. I can’t boot past the Xbox wallpaper with stock hdd & 80 wire cord to start chimp(sometimes “Microsoft” will show up if I mess with the disc drive). Should I be able to use my Xbox normally with just swapping to 80 wire cord? Is it a cord problem? It works perfectly fine on stock cord.
Great video, but I wasn’t sure about the pros and cons of having the different hard drive partitions sized differently. Presumably certain partitions are usually used for different tasks? What’s the advantage of having F take up most space?
FYI: Larger drives, like my Seagate ST2000DX001 prefer the F option. Selecting F and G doesn't seem to create a G partition at all. Hope this helps someone. Update:the drive isn't booting, going to try a 1TB drive. Seagate 1 TB worked perfectly!
It does work. You need to enable G partition with the help of nkpatcher settings application, so the system knows there is a G partition. Only for softmoded consols. Modchip does it automatically.
Update: I finally gave up on trying to install the "approved" WD HDD I bought. I don't know if it was the HDD or the adapter but I just couldn't get this HDD or work with CHIMP. I finally just plugged in an old 250GB IDE drive I had lying around it it worked great! Less storage but at least it's more than the 8GB original HDD.
So i did this using a lockable 500gb hdd did exactly as described and im left with 123gb not the 4something it should be listed as what can i do with softmodded xbox to get the correct size or do i have to do this all over again and select a diff option when using chimp thanks
My xbox with xbox4gamers and a evo x aladdin modchip flashes orange once i load chimp and press A with no change in the screen. I am using the startech recommended hdd convert board for my slave. Neither drive wants to load in Fatxplorer, so I was attempting this method. Any suggestions?
I need help, it’s not working, when disconnecting the dvd drive and loading chimp, buttons don’t respond, and the Xbox just closes chimp, does boot up the dashboard and flashes a yellow light doing nothing. I’m using the star tech ide to sata adapter
@jakeplayzyt5220 I'm using another ide instead of sata but I ran into the same issue I had to open chimp before unplugging from DVD drive and plugging into new drive hope this helps
Maybe u know the answer to this. So I upgraded my HDD. To a 1 tb. Followed your video. But I seem to only have 120gb available. I chose f uses all available space. Any ideas?
So, I'm in the process and then you say that you are going to go to your applications menu and I see an menu that isn't showing on my Xbox and I am suddenly lost! Where did that menu come from!
Heads up, don't have to let it sit on the dash like we used to. With this version of chimp you can load it up and do the hot swap right after chimp checks the DVD drive.
why is my system turning off immediately after unplugging the IDE cable? There is an in human amount of time between unplugging and the system turning off. Not 2-4 seconds like everyone says.
@@JMKGalaxy2 no idea what is causing that. Have never had it happen. I load chimp, wait like 5 secs, and then hot swap the ide cable out of the dvd drive and into the new hard drive and then proceed
@@carlcharlbury Yeah it was super strange. Fortunately I managed to complete the swap. It was super random how long before the system shut down. Sometimes it was fractions of a second other times it was 20 seconds. That's when I was able to do it. All good now.
Hey there my dude, I really appreciate the video and I'm trying to follow it. I've done everything up to the point where you're supposed to hot-swapping the IDE cable. I let the Xbox sit on the dashboard for a few minutes as you say, then do the swap, but then when I try to select anything on the menu at that point, it won't work. What do you think the problem is and what can I do about it? I'd greatly appreciate your input!! (if it means anything, I have Rocky5's menu installed for my dashboard)
@@ArchadesGames Oh, looks like the problem was either the SATA converter I was using was bad OR I needed to switch to the new pin connector. Either way, I got it to work!
So I've done everything you said when I get too Chimp to check if both HDD are recognizable somehow my slave drive is not recognizable. I'm pretty sure it's because I'm using the stock ide cable given with the Xbox. If I'm wrong what could be the problem. Thanks
Ok I get to where it is cloning process but about 75% complete then it gives me hda not ready for command and then it severely slows down data transfer speed to kib/s then stops at 80%. How do I fix?
Followed this and everything went smoothly....until it didn't. I put my xbox back together....and my screw went straight through the 80 wire cable. I'm such a TWAT!
@@ArchadesGames It's entirely my own fault. I had about 30 games copied over, then tried to use my Insignia account. Apparently Chimp doesn't copy over EVERTHING. It doesn't copy live accounts. So I had to put my old drive back in, use a USB drive to back up the account. Put the new drive in, tested it. HAPPY. Close the xbox with the screws and BAM....Not happy. At least IDE cables aren't too expensive. Just gotta wait for the new cable to arrive.
Got to the clone portion and when i checked my hard drive status, they are both locked, cant clone until the master is unlocked. Unlocked it, now error 5 of course. How is your hard drive unlocked on a softmodded xbox?
@@ArchadesGames I unlocked the wrong drive thinking it was my master, ill need to hook the master (xbox) drive to my pc and lock it back down with FatXplorer. Im an idiot thats what happened lol
Reading my question 3 weeks later i feel like an idiot 😂😂 I know a lifetime more now about how to mod these ol girls, and my ignorance is just a little smaller now 🤪
How long does it take to load the Rocky 5 tools disk? I've burnt 2 discs (DVD-R) with an 8x and every time I try to run it from Xbox Media Center the green light flashes on the Xbox and black screen for over 10 minutes.
Should only take about 1-2 minutes max. you can try running it from the HDD by extracting it and copying it over through ftp or try installing it with DVD2Xbox
I upgraded to a 2TB ST2000DM008 using chimp with my soft mod xbox... after the upgrade everything seemed to be fine. Locked too. But it takes like 20 seconds to boot to the dash AND its not showing all off the 2tb drive. Only like mayne 100gb
Im wondering the same thing not getting any response to this i used a 500gb hdd followed the video to the T and im onky getting 123gb of space. Im wondering if i can run this again and and split f and e or something because this did not work.
Softmod, Cerbios. Can I just use fatXplorer to format and lock a new 2TB drive with the backed up EEPROM? Then copy the contents of the original C and E partitions to the new drive before swapping?
Has anyone got this to work with the new IDE to SATA converter in the description? I keep getting Error Code 11, and I have everything plugged in correctly.
I couldn't get it to boot for ages. Eventually I figured out it was the adapter from the Amazon link. Don't get that Star-Link adapter. It stops the dvd drive working properly.
Just came across a premodded original xbox with some pretty old versions. Wondering if I should revert it and soft mod from scratch, I have the usb cable and mech assault. Just need to buy a compatible usb
Cant wait to get a bigger hdd as well. Thanks for this video. Gives me a lot more confidence. I haven't touched an IDE cable since my pentium 4 era celeron dell desktop lol
great video! weird question.. i have a spare 120 hhd already check and its compatible but might be from an old ps3. do i have to get it wiped first? or will the xbox clone right over it?
I'm using ur steps have the same exact hard drive and it pops up saying it can't be locked it reads it so the adapter piece works the 80 pin wire is already installed all works I looked at my hard drive and it does not have a jumper clip on it does the hard drive need that or does the adapter jumper clip work thanks
does doing this clean out the slave HDD? i think i have maybe an OS in this HDD im trying to use but I wonder if doing this will just erase everything on the HDD that way i can just start it fresh and not have to actually remove it a different way.
My games folder is inside the "E" partition, I can't fit more games in it, how can I put the games in the "F" partition and make the Xbox to read them?
Chimp didn't set up my partitions correctly. Despite choosing to split between F and G, it only set up 120ish GB of F. If anyone else has this problem, I recommend they do as I did and find a guide on how to use XBpartitioner, (also found on the extras disk) it'll allow you to set your partitions correctly if Chimp didn't do so already.
So in my case i used a 500gn drive it cloned perfectly im left with only 123gb after following this guide exactly. Any suggestion as what option to use when using the extras disc i have fpt the file direct to the xbox already.
I tried the clone, everything seemed to work but I couldn't use the existing cable like you. The old cable works with the old drive. Why do I need a new cable?
Ugh, wish I wasn't trapped on error 9 regardless of drive. Maybe the issue is the IDE to SATA adapter I'm using not working? I'm using the recommended startech one.
I hope someone could help me. Does anyone know the difference of speed of an hdd vs loading games off of the disc? I could only find information on speed for the ps2 but nothing on the og xbox.
Had some weird experience with a StarTech IDE-to-SATA adaptor, at least on my particular 1.6 OG Xbox. I launch the console, it works fine. I turn it off and try to launch it again, I get the error screen. Some time passes, I launch the console, it works fine. Basically, any immediate attempts to power on the Xbox after the initial boot always result in the error screen. Some time has to pass. However, soft resets from the main menu work fine. A cheaper, Chinese adaptor also worked fine.
Can i Unlock the new cloned hard drive so i can connect it to my PC and use Fatxplorer to transfer games faster? it takes forever to FTP games into it.
One thing about my 1.6 Xbox that I haven't seen mentioned. After doing the hot swap my Xbox would freeze before I could get into chimp. I noticed the original hard drive jumper was set to "cable select". I assume all the 1.6 seagate drives are set this way. Switching the jumper to "master" resolved the issue.
Q1 If i had tsop original xbox "hard modded" can i put any HDD not matter if it lock or unlocked? Q2 i planned to tsop my xbox but someone says after flashing the bios you should remove the tsop wires from your mother board? And thank you
Excellent video. I decided to use an old PS2 IDE drive, as it is a maxtor brand that was verified 5 times on the chart. (2F040L0) When I run Chimp, I get an error that it is unable to lock the drive. I followed the jumper pin guides online for a slave config and all 5 listings on the chart indicate it is locking. Any thoughts?
Don't need a sata since I only own about 12 games. What's the process of using another ide hdd ? Have 1 soft modded. Other is hard modded with a chip but it's stuck in Spanish
I've yet to mod mine (waiting on parts) but I was thinking of the method you did, can you basically just put all games on the F partition (for example) or do they need to be on C or another one for example? Also its been 3 months since you did this video, did you have any issues creating just F and not F & G in terms of adding games or any other kind of issue (i'm new af to Xbox modding). And while I'm jumping the gun, I like to have a rough idea on what to do before I start doing it xD
Games/Homebrew should all go into extended partitions like F or G. C is for the original Dash and system files, E if for game saves and DLC, music etc. It can be used for games and homebrew but it is limited to about 4 gigs. Typically a custom dash gets installed here with a launcher found in C. Then a number of cache partitions are available for games to use for various purposes. But to answer that second part, I haven't had any issues with using just F!
I actually still want to repurpose the original hard drive from my OG XBOX but I connected it to an IDE/SATA to USB adapter and it shows as unallocated and not initialized, so when I do initialize it, Windows throws up an error saying "The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error." And it's not my adapter cuz it also works in my SATA drives. Also I tried DBAN and it froze at 8% so that's out of the question. Any advice?
@@ArchadesGames I unlocked it from my Xbox and created a simple volume on my Windows machine and it works like a dream! Don't know why I didn't try this before LOL! Thanks for the help!
Ok, so i followed the tutorial. Using a 500 gb HDD on a v1.6 console. The F: drive available space looks good in Chimp, but once I reboot into the dash there's only 120 gb available in F:
Thanks for replying. I figured it, my softmod was just too old, once I upgraded to the latest Rocky5 all apps now see the entire free space, all 457 GB.
Cloning worked but when I try to boot with the new drive I get error 08. The adapter is set to master and I’m using an 80 pin ide cable. Any suggestions?
