p.s. Apologies for all the autofocus hunting on that cell phone video. Future videos from me will be shot on a fancier device.

Years ago I replaced a large bedroom window. Called 50 (yes, fifty) handymen and none would do just one window. I measured 35 times and bought an HD window. Some friends helped me put it in, after I replaced the sill. Looked great and I painted the room, then the next and the next, etc. Satisfying! Time to tackle the basement now. Thanks!

Best video on the subject I've watched so far. Down to earth and practical. Really clear what's going on here. Has entirely demystified window installation for me. Thanks for the savings! :)

Pro tip: The blue can of Great Stuff is specifically designed for this application. It doesn't expand as much as the red can. Too much expansion may cause your window jamb to warp, thus causing problems with the window being able to function properly.

Yep used the Blue Great Stuff in my window and it worked great. It only fills in the gaps, doesn't have enough force to push plastic.

Most normal people would also remove the new-con screw-in tab when putting in a Jeld-wen window, as that tab is meant for framing on a wooden exterior wall that would be finished with vynil siding. When installing these windows in basement concrete casement, they are supposed to be cut off so you can set the window deeper into the casement, so the window is a bit more centered in the cavity, and the offset is not too much + or - As well, you should have at least 4 screws in place to anchor the window as anyone can kick in the window (1/8 an inch of low-expanding foam is not an anchor and should never be treated as such)

I like your comment and I’m trying to figure out how to install windows in my basement of my brick 1940s house. I have the glass frame which is hinged and an outer storm window which are framed in by two by fours which are attached to the brick foundation. Would you suggest removing all of that wood and just get down to brick and concrete it installing or keep the 2 x 4 framing in place and attached to that from the inside of the house? Any feedback would be much appreciated as there are so many ways to do this

Thx for taking the time to comment… that was confusing me since the basement windows I have are encased in concrete

Looks nice, especially inside. If the window is in a place in your basement that doesn't need light/ventilation you could even consider just filling it in. I did this to one window in the basement of an old house I owned with some plywood and foam board. It cost very little and was easy to do. It also allowed me to easily rout my sump pump hose out through a hole I drilled in the new board.

Nice touch with the wood work, would like to see a little clip on how that worked, though I suppose that is an exercise left to the reader. For a truly cheap fix, you could have replaced the window pane of course (a couple dollars down at your local hardware shop vs. quite a bit more for the window) though no doubt the new window is more energy efficient and opens nicer.

Improper install for this window. The window is supposed to be supported by shims not the plastic nailing flange. And you didn’t leave enough space for spray foam.
@jpperry2117
@jpperry2117 4 года назад
Moodie B Yeah, I have always seen the nailing flange snapped off and the window screwed from the sides. Then caulk from the exterior and interior and you’re done. No exterior trim needed.

I just had a great thought on basement windows! ORder the window bigger than the actual block opening! This will give you a lot more EGRESS without cutting block or headers! Mount the window on the interior side of the wall or even on the exterior OVER the existing opening! USe Brick molding or even just 5/4 material to frame out the new opening. Trim as needed!

Mr. Money Mustache yea I assume you have the supercharger that holds 6 batteries. The high capacity p108 batteries last forever! I just convinced my parents to get the 20" 40v Ryobi mower and it kicks ass too. Did their entire 1/3 acre yard that has thick zoysia grass. I'm gonna pick one up once my 20 yr old mower gives up the ghost. Keep these videos coming. I have financial confidence but I need more handyman confidence

Hey, can we get a look at what you did on the outside to finish off the window?
@MrMoneyMustacheChannel
@MrMoneyMustacheChannel 7 лет назад
+Blair Anderson Good point, I missed that important detail! My friend Luc finished off that part - he sliced up some 2x4s to become roughly 1.5x2.25, and built effectively a picture frame around each window with 45 degree angle corners. The frame extends all the way to the edge of the opening in the foundation wall, so each piece is trimmed a little to fit the uneven space.. Nailed in with 2" finish nails (nailgun) and caulked/painted nicely. Nothing fancy but it blends everything in.

On other YT videos, window replacements are put in from the inside, where they drill from the opposite direction as in this video. What's different about this situation that it should be installed from the outside and drilled to the exterior?
@TheFord1965
@TheFord1965 2 года назад
That’s what I’m trying to figure out. If it’s installed from the inside you would not order windows with nailing fins right?. I have a 1940s house with 34” x 17” tilt in windows with an outer storm. The wood framing around them is a 2” x 6” or 2” x 4” up against the brick walls. I guess I could order them slightly undersized 33.5 x 16.5 without nail fans and install from the inside. Could anybody give me feedback on the best way to do this? Thank you

@@TheFord1965 When we had our century-old double hung windows replaced in 2017, they were replaced entirely from the inside. I think unless you are going to pull off siding and redo some water proofing on the outside (not a bad idea if it hasn't been updated in a long while, but it creates a much larger project), replacement windows are preferred vs the new construction windows with the fin. In general, I'd also think about how well protected the windows are from rain. If you've got a solid overhang not far from the top of the windows (e.g. 18 inch overhang that starts 18 inches above the window, that reduces risks as windows frequently leak at the top. If you've got a minimal overhang, then the risk will be higher and by how much would likely depend heavily on the details of your particular wall.
