Jarrod, can you also show how you test your laptops, at least in terms of thermal and speeds, so those of us who purchase the laptops you reviewed can test them in the same way as well?
Got a 2TB Solidigm P44 pro, cause why not, space to hoard photos, for games, and maybe try a linux distro. (+the 512GB Micron drive that came with my Loq 15) Honestly, I fucked up the Windows 11 install, so I had to reinstall if, but luckily I managed to pull my old browser data with my random passowords for websites that would be annoying to reset. (Like Warframe, cause only late last year I started playing, and didn't think to backup the dang password). When I installed the new SSD in my Loq 15, I was pleasantly surprised to be able to stick the (seller) included heatsink + thermal pad, though now that I watched the LTT vid about PTM7950, I think I should swap it out for that, for better cooling and also more airflow (there is a gap, but idk how much, though the thermal pad is quite thicc). Maybe even swap the thermal paste on my CPU and GPU.
Just to share, I reapply thermal paste for you and cpu on 2022 Asus rog zephyrus 16 with ptm7950 and the changes was day and night. Liquid Metal on cpu was oxidised and thermal paste on gpu was dried out after 1.5 years of use. After replacing with ptm, I got more than 15 degree diff on gpu and similar cpu temp as Liquid Metal. Ptm for the win as it’s very good in thermal performance and easy to apply!
My Katana GF76s cpu has always run hot, this video is inspiring me to try and re-apply the paste, see if it helps (i12700h cpu) Your comment is always helping to inspire, bro. Ty =) ~a random canadian subscriber dude
Did you ever consider Thermal Grizzly KryoSheet ? my lenovo legion 5 pro with ryzen 7 7745hx run a little too hot for my liking and is only 6 or 7 months old like 92 degrees ++ is relatively demanding games even though I limit the fps and all that stuff but still gets quite hot even on a cooling pad so I ve been considering opening it up and changing it to that or the ptm not sure yet still considering if its worth the hassle or it will just keep running as hot
Thank you so much for this video. I have ASUS TUF A15 for my first ever gaming laptop. I used your recommendations and tips to boost my ram and add an extra ssd. It was flawless.
@@Vrexeityy But most of the thick laptops contain a PGA 988 socket, through which the processor can be changed, and I want to verify my information whether the architecture of the alternative processor, the power consumption, the chip’s carrying capacity, and its support for this processor and whether it contains the same number of cores without paying attention to the number of threads. I just want to verify this information because it will be legendary for the laptop kit
@@salihamouhoub My point still stands that 99% of modern laptops have soldered in CPUs, there's no point dedicating an entire portion of the video to something as niche as that. If you want a tutorial on how to swap out CPUs for the 1% of laptops that support it, go search for a dedicated tutorial
There is a channel called “The Gizmo Pro” that is using your graphs to talk about the Razer blade 18. I don’t know if he gave you proper credit so just giving you the heads up.
Those stickers are illegal I believe it's just it's too time consuming to report them/most people don't know how or where to report them myself included
Jarrod, if i replace the SSD, which has the OS installed in it, from one slot to another of the same Motherboard (PC or Laptop), will we have to reinstall the OS and other programs all again?? And also what about the Data in it??
Recently bought IdeaPad Pro 5 which has 16gb soldered ram. Wanted 32gb but could not compromise on other specs for it. Is it possible to unsolder down the line?
Me too. Like, seriously, it was i7 and 16gigs or i5 and 32gigs. I took the i7+16gigs combo. I think that's because mine has an inefficient heatsink. All I can hope for is that someone solders i7 instead of i5 to get the best of both worlds. Even if I would have to use IETS with it.
Used to be you chose between and SSD and HDD for your 2.5 inch bay because one offered speed, the other offered space. Now that HDDs in 7mm form factor top out at around 2TB, but SSDs can go up to 8, and even 16TB, the only time i would put an HDD in a laptop is if it is meant as a file server or something, because laptops are meant to be moved around, hard drives are not, and with a 2TB SSD costing around $100 for a mid range, there is no reason to go for a $70 HDD, the SSD will almost certainly last longer, and probably end up costing you less in power in the long run.
Hi, I have a LOQ 15ARP9 3050 6gb 12ram grey. The wifi card recently failed and I was wondering if you know where I could find a replacement or an upgrade to my laptop? If you're able to answer my question, that would be greatly appreciated. Thank you
This video is very well done. Great work on the organization, walk through, material, effective communication, and trouble shooting. Solid work!! (Btw, I have been upgrading a 2019 OMEN 17-cb000. I recently upgraded the ram from 12GB to crucial 64GB. Even though all specs state that the mother board only allows 32GB, but this mother board reads all 64GB, and it runs so much quieter now. I am going to be upgrading the wireless card to the Intel Wifi 6 AX200 from the Realtek RTL8822BE. I plan on upgrading the thermal paste soon, and the SSD to gen 4. I only found you because I was considering upgrading the GPU if it's possible. I typically see that it's not possible, but I may jump on it. I'll keep you posted if I do.
just got a 4tb 990pro for my legion 5 15arh05 yes, it is the fastest gen4 in a gen3 slot, but im planning to eventually build a pc anyways with the same storage, so i suppose its ok
This is definitely the best guide on yt. Thank you so much! I am pondering upgrading the RAM in my legion 5 2021 because of the video you made explaining how the stock RAM is really slow compared to the average DDR4. I might also change the wifi card too but the one that came with my Legion 5 is a Gigabit one, idk if its worth the upgrade to an intel one. (These are the specs of the card I believe) Gigabit Ethernet, 1x RJ-45 802.11ac 2x2 Wi-Fi® + Bluetooth 5.1, M.2 Card • Wi-Fi 6, 802.11ax 2x2 Wi-Fi + Bluetooth 5.1, M.2 card
I was watching your video and I was mostly confused with the CNVio issue of the wifi cards, and I have one with M.2 CNVio (it does not have the number 2 after) and I would like to know if I can replace it with one of wifi 6E or similar, since I would like to replace it, but I am seeing that most of them are CNVio2 and not CNVio.
If you want a challenge try to upgrade from 1x8GB DDR4 to 2x8G DualRank by buying a single stick-only. Hint: if in doubt, try swapping sticks. Sometimes that actually helps 😱
My lenovo Legion Pro 7 16IRX8H runs at 5200 RAM SPEED with 2x32GB crucial that is 5600 sticks each and I am currently using 20GB. Should I leave it with the current ram or replace itr with the faster 2x16GB 5600 sticks that came with the laptop?
+1 on all of lift the back of your laptop, _clean_ the _garbage_ out the heatsink, and appreciate the thermal interface suggestions. For whatever reason, my laptop does *substantially* better lifted off the desk, more like 10-20°C. I didn't buy a stand, I just rolled up paper towels (Univ student at the time). I also knew someone with pets, their laptop had all kinds of dust and fur _in between the fan and the heatsink_ (not enough to blow from the outside, fan had to come out), it pulled out like a felt pad. She was as shocked as I was, and temperatures were vastly improved after that. While she was in there, added an HDD and RAM and she didn't need to buy a laptop, just maybe $300 in parts? 10/10 would recommend even if you have no idea what you're doing. Find a teardown video! Also, some heatsinks will have numbers on them, *definitely do the thing where you don't tighten them all the way on first pass* , and if they have numbers, do them in that order.
Hey Jarrod, what if one of my cooler screws are stripped and i cant remove it? Am i screwed? (no pun intended) My laptop overheats badly, to the point where i had to disable turbo for it to run slower but cooler. I cant clean my fans nor change the paste cuz theyre combined. Any help would be appreciated. (Its a acer predator ph315-51-717T, the i7 8750h 1060 6gb version)
Bruh, I just realized I did have a USB Wifi dongle, the antena is like half the hight of the example, and the reason why I don't have it with me is because I lent it to my brother since his computer didn't have a wifi card. (Also I bought that dongle for my old laptop, or for when I use my mothers laptop, cause my old laptop was a second hand Dell E6410, soo it wouldn't have mattered, but I was interested in how good the signal range could be.
The problem is chip makers artificially limit their laptop parts. Even if framework offered nvidia options to upgrade to from the rx7700s, the only real upgrade will start at the 4080m and 4090m. Thats literally just 2 options. And both cost WAY too much and are still artificially limited. Even if you waited for rtx 5000, the rtx 5060 doesn't look like it'll be that great considering its another 128bit gpu. Likely going to be another small upgrade. The rtx 5070 might be disappointing too. And the 5070, 5080 and 5090 mobile gpu's will be hugely overpriced. Also, don't count on amd because they've always disappointed on laptop gpu's. So either pay so much, that you may as well buy a new gaming laptop to upgrade, or barely get an upgrade at all. Cpu's are the same. Intel's 12th gen, when tuned, can match ryzen 7000. Like the 12700h outpacing the 7840hs. Or the 12650h not being much slower than a 7840hs. 13th and 14th gen are largely rehashes of 12th gen meaning performance won't be much better. And if you go for the real high end chips, you'll need a new cooler and powerbrick to power them. Might as well buy a new gaming laptop at that point. Worst of all, you cannot undervolt these cpu's in most cases, even hx/hk ones because oem's like acer block that. So there's no way of making them run cooler. Neither can you easily do tweaks like IMON and AC loadline to bypass dynamic boost or kinda UV the cpu. I've seen a nice 10 to 15% boost using these tweaks + overclocking. As long as the laptop community keeps falling for marketing BS, chip makers and oem's will keep ripping you off. And thats something framework will never be able to solve. And this has to be solved if you want actually upgradable laptop's, not paper upgrades.
My Acer Nitro 5(i5 12500h) is currently using 16gb ddr4 (1rx8 and 1rx16 sticks). How do I know that my laptop supports 2rx8 sticks(2 16gb sticks) to upgrade to 32 gigs? OR , does every ddr4 laptop supports dual rank x8 memory irrespectively?
What if I have a pre installed single stick of sk Hynix 8gb 3200Hz ram, can I add another 8/16gb crucial 3200Hz ram, and make it dual channel, I don’t want to remove my pre installed ram. Thanks
Hello i have a problem with my asus x515EA laptop. I bought a 16gb ram stick to get from 8gb to 20gb ram. Before i had a replaceable 4gb ram and a built in 4gb ram in the mainboard. After installing the 16gb ram into the slot everything worked well and i had 20gb ram in total (16gb + 4gb built in ram). After that i made a bios update for the laptop and when it finished the ram is only 16gb according to the task Manager and now the laptop is only using 1 of 2 ram slots. I installed the asus bios version 316. How can i fix this ? Pls anyone help me with this.
Shoutout to Lenovo for giving the option to buy the laptop with only one 16gb stick so you can upgrade to 32 in loq 2024 (Unfortunately in my case I had to buy 8 and upgrade to 32)
Great video but one question about upgrading RAM. Is it ok to buy one ram dimm (as long as it has the same Mhz, capacity and CL) or do we need to buy 2 dimms and replace the one that comes by default?
Upgraded my 2015 alienware from 16GB 2133MTps to 32GB 2667MTps, swapped out old nvme and sata ssd with nvme, upgraded from killer 1535 to ax210 and ultimate thermal upgrade from thermal paste CM maker gel nano with TG carbonaut and added graphite thermal pads on gtx 980. Now CPU is slow. For battery always disable it from BIOS for Lenovo or asus. Always check the voltage and current rating for standard and express charger with hwinfo. Alienware battery always dies with standard charging which will charge at 65W till 100% and had to change to express charging seems to be correct with charging to 80% with 65W then 10W till 95W and finally 1W till 100%
Guys, I have an Asus tuf 2022 version with a battery of 56 Wh, could I change the battery for one with a higher capacity? I was looking at the Asus Tuf Dash from the same year but the voltage changes a little, will it work?
If I'm having big lag spikes while gaming Elden Ring am I screwed because I can't upgrade my graphics card? I have 5+ year old Legion 5 that's all stock parts
I have a question about heat with my legion 7i: it gets extremely hot while playing games on TV, and I only had it for a few weeks. Is the excessive heat damaging to the internals long-term? Do I need to mess around with thermal paste? Thanks
Jarrod, if i replace the SSD, which has the OS installed in it, from one slot to another of the same Motherboard (PC or Laptop), will we have to reinstall the OS and other programs all again?? And also what about the Data in it??
I tried to pry out the soldered ram, I thought both of So-dimm ram slot on asus vivobook are upgradable. Now I have damaged the laptop it won't start. Why would they not provide both slots which are upgradeable? Smart move asoos
Thanks to asus cheapening their designs over the years I was able to put the mini LED panel found in the Scar 16 into my strix 16. Works flawlessly and a billion times better than the washed out 1080p ips they were using
Anyone with the 7i 2024 4070 been able to over clock at all w vantage? Every time I move it up a couple notches from default and run 3d mark it crashes 3d mark
Just wanted to let dell g series uses to know if you are planning to upgrade SSD it need mounting bracket and it's not provided by dell and you can't even buy that mounting bracket so you have to tape that ssd😢
Great informative video, i really enjoyed the whole 43 minutes. I do have one single remark though: what version of windows is recommended? I mean new laptops tend to come with windows 11 BUT would it be a good idea if you get a bigger SSD to install an older version of windows on it like Windows 10? I think the video was really giving a good explanation of all the other things, which was very complete (sorry for my non motherlanguage english) but that minor detail I considered a bit missing. So long story short, do you recommend to keep the same windows version at this moment? or do you think it's worth to get a key for windows 10 if the laptop is sold with windows 11 but has a smaller SSD of 512 Gb which i want to upgrade to 2Tb or more?
many laptops if they are not premium limit ssd size per slot , like ideapad models here in india has 1tb per slot u cant use a 2tb drive, the service centre guy also told the same he said i tried and it didnt work( locked in firmware)
Yu missed the best thing Heatsink itself In case some1 bot not the top end model Yu can buy the top end cooler and put it in ur mid end system boom more cooling more powerrrrrrr
Tech companies don't want yo to fix or upgrade. Just toss that thing into your nearest landfill or ocean and buy another overpriced thing that is designed to fail 2 months after the warranty expires
The easy replaceable batteries must come to gaming laptops… Considering they are thicker and we don’t need to see the under cover… As well as one screw ram upgrade… Europe must have act on these…
Jarod, thank you for your video, My Legion Pro 7 16IRX8H is running 5200 with 64GB (2X32GB sticks Crucial) and I am not sure if i should put back the ram that came with the laptop (2x16gb 5600 speed)? Thank you so much for your help.
Depends if you want capacity or speed. For most games you might get slightly better FPS from the faster memory, but it probably won’t be enough to be obvious
