I have this same singer sewing machine. Gosh but I am delighted to see another. It belonged to my grandmother who was an haute couturière in Paris. My still functions with the leather gearing coil. I still have the receipt of 1947, likely one of the most early industrial sewing machines. I use to make my school clothes on it. Today I make wedding gowns and other things too.

Hello! Thanks for this video. I found out that the material I need to replace my tub chair is called a Cambric Dust Cover. This is attached underneath the tub chair. Mine was torn and I wanted to replace it. Now, I need to look for your video on replacing a vintage chair or tub chair leg. Just want to do it right the first time. Replacing the Cambric Dust Cover material is SO easy. I'm glad I looked at your video before hiring a professional to do that simple re-stapling job. Wow!

Check to see if your legs unscrew. Then they’ll be easy to replace as the bolts are a standard size

@@ArtisanUpholsteryStudio Hi! Thanks for the tips. Original legs were screwed to chair with two screws. Would you suggest a corner plate and using a hanger bolt to replace legs? Legs I ordered have NO hanger bolts. Or just carefully drilling a thin screw through leg into the chair, as originally built. Both options seem good, but I wonder if a corner bracket would raise the front legs a little higher than just attaching the legs directly. I am replacing two front legs. Back legs are okay. Again, without seeing my tub chair, thanks for your expertise and tips. They are GREATLY appreciated!!

Hi Aimee. I am impressed with your skill and speed. You have a natural feel for the craft and I spent 19 years doing upholstery. I am a bit surprised that you upholster the seats first. I was always taught to upholster the inside arms followed by the inside back and the seat last. I did learn that you can be shown 2 or 3 ways to do things, but then find your own way. Whatever works for you I guess👍

My chair doesn't have that much stuffing, and I'm trying to make a slip cover but this does help, especially with back fitting technique.

Very excellent tutorial. I am doing a similar chair. There is not a pattern to mark and cut the inside back material from and no indentations to judge where to join the material around the curve at the arms. You marked and cut your material in an ellipse, flared out at the top and bottom. Is there a way to measure and cut the ellipse based on those measurements so the material takes the proper shape of the curve. Thanks for your videos. You are the best.

It’s not something that needs to be precise. It’s more of an art than a science. The flares at the top should meet up when they wrap over the top edge, then you can duplicate that flare on the bottom.

Hi, I wouldn’t recommend buying fabric online. You need to be able to feel it and see it to know it is suitable for upholstery. Thank you for the video idea...fabric for upholstery is a great topic to cover.

So happy to find your tutorial, almost the exact chair I am about to tackle as a novice! I have a question, as a slipcover sewer, I would be inclined to create my piping with fabric cut on the bias. Is this not necessary when upholstering?

It’s not necessary in upholstery, though some people will tell you otherwise. In my experience, cutting on the bias is a waste of fabric, and is almost always unnecessary.

I was going to watch this shortly after you posted, which this one was a quick turn-around, but got busy landscaping. You always make it look so easy to do this piping, and then slapping on more padding...the advantage of being a highly skilled Artisan. Was there a repeat at 15:33 and 22:13 "going to do other side immediately?" I just read below where someone else noted the same. As you said before, your not an expert at video editing...yet, but who cares, I watch you because I appreciate your upholstery skills. Thank you.

You can use it wherever it helps you, but I’ve personally never used it on the inside back.

Hi Amy, Amazon is out of stock for the staple shooter and have now information for that model. They have a MT 7116 is this ok and what size nose would be best? Also, the device comes with staples. Is there a size that would be mostly used? I would imagine need a few different sizes. Please let me know which model i should pick or maybe a different model that works best for you. amzn.to/49JI44r this one is a fine replacement, with a long nose. It will work fine for the price, I have 4 with the short nose. They’re not professional, but they’re good enough. Thanks for letting me know that they’re sold out. 22 gauge 3/8” C crown staples are what you’re looking for.

The length of staples are 1/4 to 5/8. The say that stainless steel would be best for Upholstery.

How do you decide to use the old stuffing versus replacing it with foam or something else? I have a really old chair and I know there is either horse hair or straw in it.

It depends on whether or not you want to keep your chair authentic. It will lose all its antique value if you replace the old paddings with foam, so I always keep antiques as original as possible. Foam will break down in a matter of years, horsehair will never break down in normal, indoor conditions.

awesome! the deja vu was a nice touch ;D. i recently got a stapler like the one you have and i´d like to ask how much oil you put on the thing to survive. you staple staple omg. my stapler is oozing a little and i don´t want to stain things, but want the tool to last... thanks so much for sharing!.

Honestly, I don’t oil them very often. Maybe every 4 months, and they get heavy use. I’ve had the, since 2014 and have had no problems with them yet.

Nice technique Aimee... Only question I had ..... It looked like everything after about the 22 minute mark was a repeat of footage done earlier. I noticed this when you talked about the fabric and pulling some staples at the top left shoulder and restretchiing the fabric. Did I miss something? Thanks...
