Which isn't that surprising, given that Topaz AI is the only solution of the shown that actively tries to understand the "content" of the image. I am wondering what AI will be capable of doing in this sector in two years from now.
Before I came here, I just downloaded an old documentary from RU-vid that's 480p and I want to upscale to 720p which is easier for me to control for viewing purposes and takes up less drive space. I really like the comparisons at the end especially the frame within frame comparison. Appreciate this one!
Thank you. Compact enough and great information. Would have been great to see different methods applied to different kind of footages (faster, other kind of details etc.)
I think to set expectations, you need to add the time required to upscale a video and the hardware requirements. I knew that it would be slow, but I hadn't appreciated quite how slow, especially on a laptop with integrated graohics, even for a short clip!
Well this is true right now but I'm sure with the jumps we currently see in the GPU department it won't be long until the time required gets acceptable.
@@GreenBoxMedia but how long did it take to render? I'm very new to after effects and a small 4 minute clip I wanted to upscale took 50 hours. Am I doing something wrong?
I was looking for a good review that would compare some of the best alternatives for upscaling, and considering that personal family videos from years ago are very poor quality, it was nice to see the comparison of the outputs of each software. Considering that the one that gives the best results, and it's starting from such poor quality, and the sentimental value of some old family videos, the price of Enhance video AI is well worth it for the outcome. I tested some old home videos with the watermark and I was happy with the results. It's not going to perform miracles, but considering the quality I was starting with, It is still definitely worth the price. It's all about what your expectations are.
As usual, excellent content again. Red Giant 4K has been discontinued and is not compatible with current Premiere. This was a major bummer for us jumping from 1080 to 4K. AE it is as the secondary option. Great content man.
Great simplified video about upscaling. I think moving forwards, AI integrated software will be the future as it simplifies what options to choose rather than the user trying to figure out what settings to use to optimize the quality. So much time savings from video editing can be gained through AI. Keep up the good work. "If you can’t explain something in simple terms, you don’t understand it" - Richard Feynman
@@GreenBoxMedia AE is incredibly deep. I know it hasn’t been there for 20 years, but I’m thankful that it is there and that you brought it to my attention.
You, sir, are one of the BEST video explainers and presenters on RU-vid, and you didn't attempt to sell anything, to your credit. I've been researching this subject, watching many videos (including commercial $ervice provider$ using Teranex solutions and A.I.) and without question you made this complex matter simpler to understand, and most importantly, you presented the results in a plain-to-see "A - B - C - D" comparison (with 533% zoom no less!) that showed detailed results up close. Thanks for uploading in 2160p, it really helps. IMHO you presented 4x as much important information (and did it 4x faster) than most of the other video presenters I watched. You wasted NO time, there were no any unnecessary pauses, all was well-edited, and everything you explained was VERY clear and thorough. This is not an easy topic, and when I watched the other videos first, most were difficult to understand and left me with many unanswered questions; but when I watched yours, you answered all those questions. I'm going to stop expending my valuable time watching other videos first, and instead come directly to your channel first. If after watching your videos I have any questions, then I'll check out the others. Assuming your other videos are as good as this one, I'm sure I won't need to delve much deeper. Can't wait to watch more of your videos sir. I'm going to share your channel with my friends. (And the green hair = pièce de résistance).
Hahaha. Thank you very much for the kind words. I mean.... If I had anything to sell I would most likely do it too $$$. You know money is the thing that keeps a roof over our heads :D But ye I try to get to the point and only share the info that are really necessary to understand the video. I know that I could do a better job in explaining how exactly those algorithms work BUT as someone who just wants to upscale video that doesn't really matter. So yeh. As short as possible as long as needed is my goal. Thanks for watching :)
topaz software has a gui now for their program and defined settings depending on the type of upscaling your doing based on the quality of your video , results look much cleaner and less processed looking compared to older versions of it.
Thanks for sharing bro, now I know I don't have to spend money since I got an After Effects 2020 A.I., I mean Detailed Upscaler. I used to use the Premiere Pro 2020 "Set to frame" size, but it turns it a bit softer. Now thanks to your video I will just use the After Effects power, then edit them on Premiere.
Hello @greenbox does the Red Giant Instant 4k still sell this product? I check site and am trying to find it, and I thin maybe I have to buy as a suite or something? If IM using premier pro, I would love to use this option, I just cant see where to buy it.
From my understanding they discontinued the shooter suite once Red Giant got bought by MAXON. If I would not already own it I probably would shift to the Video Enhance AI (Topaz Labs) since they came a long way since the Beta shown in this video.
I always find this stuff interesting. Probably because transforming old low res stuff into new high res stuff is fascinating (to some, including me). I'm still unconvinced though. It annoys me that semi-decent video editing software doesn't do this as standard these days. I use Sony Platinum, which is fine in general, but is useless at up-scaling. For me, I also want ai colouring as I want colour as well as extra definition, which is even rarer and of course way more difficult to do. All I need by the looks, is a way faster machine, lot's of cash to spend on the top software and lot's of time to test stuff. One out of three is not good, but it's a start :) Although time, is still an issue, as I like to keep busy and flit between projects like a moth to a flame.
Yeah I see what you mean. But to be fair. This entire AI revolution started within the last 20 months. I assume we will see WAY more AI-powered tools in the future. Give it 5 more years and I assume AI tools will be included i every bigger Editing suit.
@@GreenBoxMedia Yeah, true of course. But for upscaling, AI is not really needed :) It's been around for some time and rely's on simple pixel comparisons. Otherwise hardware upscaling wouldn't be possible :) For colour conversion, yes, AI is the only way to go for any automatic technique. Upscaling however, is not new or difficult to do, so hence my disappointment at packages not including it by default. I actually thought more expensive newer apps would, and I was limited to my old mid priced software which didn't :(
hey. I followed your video, and I am having a bit of an issue. I was wondering if you'd be willing to advise me. A recording I have is in 720p, I need to get this clip to 1080p. I used AE as you described. However, I am still losing vast amounts of image quality. The major issue is that there is text in the image that needs to be readable. Any advise?
@@GreenBoxMedia Sorry, I was not clear. The text was clear at 720p but it is not clear at 1020p. I will try upscale AI though and let you know within an hour. (Also, thank you for the prompt reply)
As someone who's never used Affert Effects before, can you tell us how you went from opening AE, to making the 4k template, adding the video, then selecting the video for upscaling? choosing which renderer you use, all that fun stuff?
Thanks, your video was a big help for my ad agency. We have old SD ads that have been brought back to life thanks to Video Enhance AI. Appreciate the tip!
He was referring to quality rather than scale. What you did was just rescale it which is just Stretched. There is no way to change the quality unless you captured the video with a 4k camera. Cant magically go from 720 to 1080 or 4k resolution.
Not 100% correct sir. I understand where you coming from and in general your statement is correct. However. The tools we looked at in this videos use interpolation algorithms which are more advanced than just "streaming". And in the case of the Topaz Video Enhance there is even an Artificial Intelligence at work which in fact does dream and hallucinate new details which weren't originally captured by the camera.
For someone who takes pictures and video as a hobby, Red Giant being the best also is overpriced for my style of photograph / videography. This somewhat answers the question of which 4K upscale would be the best fit. and that seems to be After Effects. Of course just maybe, the right idea is to shoot in 4K in the first place. However, that means a lot of storage space required. Still, when you can pick up a Canon 5D Mark 2 for around $500 dollars, it means you can take a 1080 camera and just upscale to get that quality. (or close to it). Regardless, shooting in 1080 still looks great when played back on a cell phone or iPad, etc. It only falls apart when you go to large monitors or a movie screen. So even if you shoot 1080 now, in 50 years, there probably will be software that can turn it into whatever size they have in the future.
Thanks for the review, however option 3 is misleading: What is the point of up-scaling real life video with Waifu2X model, which is only suitable for Anime like sources? Try Video2X with at least SRMD driver or if your hardware strong enough then RealSR.
Thank you, like the fact that you get to the point without frills, you are also fun to watch. I've been doing a lot of research and video helped me to make up my mind on which to get, video AI. I don't know if have other videos, bit I think it would be a good idea to let your audience know how time intensive it is to upscale videos. Thanks again for your help.
Hey there. Time is always very system dependent. Meaning someone with one CPU / GPU combo might have very different times then someone else. In my case I had no access to top-tier hardware so making a statement that is meaningful to viewers was not possible. However I am working on a video about a method that is working very fast independent from hardware. In fact you don't even need hardware for it.
Depends. If you want to upscale en entire 1080p video to 4k upscale later, but I don't recommend that. If your working on a 4k project and you have 2 clips which are full HD upscale first.
Thanks for the great video. Very helpful and well communicated. I am just wanting to improve the quality of some of my favorite music videos from the 80's and 90's. The DVDs I have are getting harder and harder to watch. Thank you.
