How to Use 3D in Storyboard Pro For Beginners

I was asked to make a comprehensive how to storyboard in storyboard pro for beginners on my current feature project and I thought I'd make it general enough for anyone out there on the internet! There's not a whole lot of resources out there on this topic and I would've loved a video detailing the basics when I was learning 3D storyboarding.
I'm still just a baby in this myself so there's things that may be wrong for different productions but these basics should at least get you started! I hope you find this useful for your personal and professional storyboarding pursuits.

the "render to 2D" button is actually really helpful if you want to test out different camera angles and focal lenses in a scene with a 3D background, but a static camera! I've found it can be really quick and easy to render different angles to 2D and stitch them together to simulate moving through that environment without rendering a 3D scene, similar to "faking" 3D camera moves with animated 2D animated backgrounds :)

You just blew my mind with this... One thing I was missing all the time in Sb Pro was camera lenses. I was thinking on learn blender from scratch, and this was a very big reason . I'm going to do it anyway, but this can do the trick nicely in the meantime. Thanks so much!!

Must admit, when vid notification popped up i had no idea who you were. Then checked the vids and holy crap they made 'The Betrayal" animation! Like and comment for the algorithm juice.

The 2D is for graphic designers like me who made first 2d frames and skins that had to be initially transitioned to 3d when it was thee very first time and it had been done. And now it’s art of the process for reaching the whole beginning to end how it is done on their first frame that’s original to them.

Really helpful stuff! I'm trying to uses 3D in my next storyboards and this gave me a good place to start from. It would have been nice if you had said what file type the 3D room was, or tips on making our own models. but theres other video I can look at for that. : ) Thanks for posting this!

hey Danica.Thanks for the vid! did everything, the first time I was able to move through the 3D scene using shift cmd but wasn't able to draw no matter what view, and now I cant move through the 3D space either. I've closed and reopened even making new projects and still getting the same result, a 3D object that's been flattened and I can't draw on it. any tips?

Try opening a Layers window on the side and select either the Face Camera or Pin to Camera option for the layer (under the Layer Alignment options). Worked for me.

Fantastic video. I had always struggled with the 3d in storyboard pro for many reasons, but this rotating the environment trick does make it more user friendly I think. Thanks for the tut. Interesting that in a video about using sbpro for 3D, you have a video running behind you of a scene done using blender ;) Does this mean you are secretly moving over to blender for such work?If so, feel free to swing by my channel for me to return the tutorial favour ;) Cheers

No it won’t! As long as the size of the 3D file isn’t huge - if it is you can download Blender for free and bring it in there, scale it way down, and export it as a fbx or obj for your SBP file. You’ll know right away if it’s too big because your SBP file will crash or move very slowly.

Wait quick question. When I made a new layer and then switched to camera mode to draw I cannot see my brush stroke other than in the little window on my layer panel
