"OL" does not mean "overload" in this case. it means "open loop", as in no continuity.

Dylan, you're to be commended for the time you take to help other people who don't know this stuff. Keep punching you're efforts are appreciated.

You are correct - the "creative" part of the video is up to you. One of the biggest gripes I have about the abundance of self-proclaimed video "producers" these days is that too many of you think everything you want to do and talk about is interesting. RU-vid used to be generally about people sharing knowledge - 3 years after this video, it has become a format for egomaniacs to listen to themselves talk (and too many times about themselves). Podcasts are the worst. They devolve into mindless jabber. All that said, people will tune-in if they like what you do/say and they won't if they don't. Oh yes, good video by the way. ☝😉

Thank you for taking the time to do this. I don't use my meter enough to remember how or what to set it at so these basic vids are HUGELY IMPORTANT!!! I'm installing your plate with 500k pots and .33cap into my 94 Fender Tele with SD Vintage Stack pickups. I know they're not your favorites but it's the sound I want :). The neck pickup works but having an issue with my bridge so after watching part 1 and part 2, I can check it myself to see what I may have done wrong. I'm thinking the ground on the bridge but we'll see.

I’ve done most of my own tech work and I love your videos. I am, by no means, an expert, and I love hearing a professional explanation of things with which I am familiar (in the practical sense (e.g. from doing)) but never actually had anyone explain it. It’s like putting a face with a name. Keep it up, brother!

As a life-long creative person, I love your response to Sarah. If I do something creative and a knowledgable person offers a specific tip to improve, great. But random generalized criticism is useless. I ignore it.

Man, that question you took first about caps was out of line. Maybe because I’m a science guy, the video was what I wanted to hear. Thanks, Dylan!

Just wanted to add, that thanks to your videos and others I’ve seen, I do all my work myself. Used a tech once to install a pickup in my first guitar. I tried and couldn’t make it work even though I thought I knew how to solder. Cold joints cost me $25 and a mess of skinny spaghetti that I gutted and redid myself years later. Thank you, Dylan.

Yay, thanks for making this video! Looking forward to part 2. Ps. Don't worry about people complaining about getting too tech-y in the videos, some of us follow your channel specifically to learn about all that stuff.

Loved the video. I've been playing bass for about 10 years, singing for a life time, changed some pots, but never got into the tech side. Thanks.

Great video! I used a meter on my Epi LP Special II to see what the stock humbuckers we're putting out for resistance. And after watching a bunch more of your videos I decided I wanted to make it my own by putting in a set of Tele pickups with a push/pull for the four-way switch. It could probably have been done better, but I am getting the sound that I want and I love it! Keep putting out great content.

I know I'm nit picking here and you won't use the MV function on the meter but you stated it will switch from AC to DC by itself. Actually, the DC symbol is in yellow and corresponds to the yellow button on the top right of the meter. Set the meter for MVAC, press the yellow button and the display switches to MVDC... This is a standard function of Fluke meters and will carry across their product line. Any symbol in yellow corresponds to the yellow button.

Open line. Cool testing. Ok, Houston we got a problem. My guitar has a electrical hum. It’s a Fernandez Revolver sustainer. With the pickup switch is in the middle & neck position I get this buzzzzzzzzzz/ hummmmmmmm. This started about a year ago. I have replaced the bridge pickup with a F space Screaming Demon a few years ago made a nice difference in tone. I have made my own cables & wired cabinets etc for years. I’m not sure of this project. The battery is good too. Maybe it’s all those soldering fumes getting to me. I have the same Fluke meter. Learned something new on this device. The capacitor reading. Btw I install security systems and high end hardware but I only work with Open line, low voltages and fail safe & fail secure equipment. I think COVID isolation getting to me. I’m writing too much. Have a day.

Your videos have been extremely helpful as I upgrade my Squire Standard Strat. I upgraded my 5 way switch, put my bridge pu on tone knob #2 ,mid +N pa's on tone knob#1, put an orange cap .022uf on both tone knobs, switched over the wires on the vol pot for left hand use, and added 3 Fender Custom Shop 69 pickups that I bought 1 yr. ago. Everything works as it should except no middle pickup.I checked the leads right at the pu with my old analog meter and nothing! The B + N both read at about 4 ohms. They all worked when in the old pick guard. Is the pickup no good? Thanks for all you do for us.

Using a multi meter with auto range. Is truly so very easy. Almost all multi meters, are made with the novice in mind. Also! You can go buy an expensive fluyk. But if you use once per year. You have waisted all kinds of guitar upgrade money. You can purchase a fantastic 30 dollar auto ranging multi meter. That is in spec with Fluyk. The only real reason people like me buy Fluyk. Is that I use them many times a day, everyday. But I have used the 30 dollar models many times. With confidence. If you purchase any multi meter. The one thing that will harm it's ability. Is wild temperature changes & moisture. So store in a dry area & temps that don exceed 100 degrees or in to cold of an area. Other than that. You are good to go. P.s they are fun to tinker with. So have fun.

Hello and congrats! Great video. I have a question. Do you knowWhat are the recomended values to have when we check the v on the strings? (The voltage that goes to the guitarrist) And where I can check some info about that? Hope you understand my English sorry about that.

Thank you very much for a great video. I have a ground issue with a Dean Edge 6 string bass. I have unscrewed the bridge and can see that the ground wire is lackered into the wood of the guitar. The guitar faithfully played for six years of constant gigging. Now that the ground issue has come up, I'd like to ask, have you ever see the ground wire lackered into the wood? Is that normal? Thanks in advance. Robin

So the first position CW after "off" with the V and yellow "Hz"....this measures Hertz? With this setting can I put the multimeter leads in the input & output (and turn knob in HPF) to measure the Hz?

Learning about a multimeter and how to use it is something kids learned about until the 80s, I guess. When the post-boomers were young, there were all those electronics and science kits, DIY radios, and so much more. If you learn about them now, you're leveling up to a freshman physics lab, and yeah, if it's interesting to you, it can lead to harder stuff.

I have a new to me guitar that doesn't work. I have a meter and everything seems to be working except both pickups seem to be dead. Is that possible? I put my meter on the two leads on the pickups and get zero reading / sound on the meter. thoughts, suggestions? thanks.

My multimeter has 6 options for the ohms part of the switch, 20m, 2m, 200k, 20k, with a weird arrow icon or 200 with sound wave icon. Which one do I use?

I have recently switched out all the electrics in my guitar (Epiphone Les Paul), including pickups and I'm not getting any sound from my bridge pickup. I'm now trying to troubleshoot to find out what might be the problem using a multimeter. I turned up the volume and tone to max and set my multimeter to Ω and 20K and place the probes on the tip and sleeve of a guitar cable plug and it reads 0.04 on my neck pickup and 0.00 on my bridge pickup. What does this mean? I thought I would get the DCR of the pickups? At least the neck pickup since that one works. Or should I turn to a different setting on the multimeter? The neck pickup is a Seymour Duncan 59' which should have 7.6K DCR and my bridge pickup is a Seymour Duncan JB (SH-4) which should have 16.6K DCR (if that helps). Otherwise, thanks for these awesome videos Dylan.

Most of the time you won't need the Rolls Royce of multimeters, like the Fluke! On the other hand, a capacitancemeter and an inductancemeter can be useful in some situations.
