Using a foam roller is a great way to release muscles and accelerate recovery from a workout.
Follow GCN on RU-vid: gcn.eu/gcnsubs
Matt Rabin, Garmin-Sharp team chiropractor, and Dan Martin, winner of Liege-Bastogne-Liege, take you through how to use a foam roller. Foam rollers are great if you can't afford or access regular massage. A foam rolling routine will help to ease knots in your muscles, gradually increasing flexibility and helping you to recover.
In this video Dan and Matt show you a routine that focuses on your legs and should take around 20 minutes.

As a runner who is training for a marathon, these foam rollers ru-vid.comUgkx9XSsjzA4f84VmhBCHlyhec7XILIxennL are really good for sore and tight muscles. This one is a good size (mine is the purple, 36 inches) not too big but big enough to work and roll both my legs at the same time - I took a photo holding the roller next to me just to provide a better representation of its size. I noticed some reviewers who complained that this is, “just a foam noodle”… and yes, that’s exactly what it is. It’s a high density foam roller. It is absolutely NOT the same consistency/strength/durability/ or texture as a ‘pool noodle’ thought and I disagree entirely with those that say so. As a former collegiate athlete and marathon runner, I’m comfortably giving this roller 5 stars. It’s lightweight and durable and does just what I need it to do at a budget-friendly price. Overall, I have no complaints and am happy with it!

This is super helpful; thanks for posting! I learned these exercises many years ago but couldn't remember exactly how to do them, especially now that I've got arthritis in my shoulders which makes it a lot harder to support my weight on my arms the way I think I remember learning. This looks entirely doable, and will be a huge help in getting my body back to where it needs to be. I would love to see a similar video addressing upper body and over-hip uses of the foam roller, too, but this is a great start.

Great video. I get a lot of knee aches and pains after riding, especially long rides, and foam rolling really helps to ease the pain afterwards.

if you get a lot of knee pain, maybe you should look into a better fitting for your bike. look esp your cleats and if you are not sure ask a specialist. just a friendly advice to a fellow cyclist - even after long rides (over 2hrs) knee pain is not norm.

I've not heard advice before to go ACROSS the direction of the muscle fibres you're rolling. I understood you have to follow the direction of the fibres, in the same way a masseuse would when giving a massage...

Shame he's still under the misguided belief that we need to "flush lactic acid". Also what about the hamstrings and gluteus?

I'm a bit late, but same foam roller routine is good for injury prevention. Helps with your flexibility, elasticity, tendons(tendonitis pains) and to avoid muscular tensity imbalances that can cause unwanted pulling on certain muscles, and Patella and knee joint.

I sometimes use a tennis ball to work out tight spots on my back and glutes. You sit/lie on it, and try to work it into a circular motion to feel the "good pain" of the tension in your back releasing. It works for me!

I get the feeling that many of the products used in videos by this Matt Rabin guy are just cases of false advertising. While foam rollers can be used to aid in the process of stretching certain muscle groups more effectively using one, along with stretching in general, doesn't actually help remove remove lactic acid from the body. Stretching is important for maximizing of muscle gain during recovery as well as getting rid of cramps and some discomfort by getting the muscles to relax but you aren't going to get rid of any soreness or aching caused by lactic acid buildup in any significant way by doing so. Same thing goes for using a masseuse or "kneading" the muscle since any fluids you displace will simply return to their low pressure region as soon as you remove pressure (You can see this effect by pressing on the surface of your skin and letting go. The lightened capillary beds beneath your skin will refill from all directions and return to its regular color immediately). The only way I'm aware of to quickly remove lactic from the body is by straining the entire muscle at once (usually by doing short full on running sprints) to get the acid out of the muscle and into the main blood steam repeatedly and keeping your heart rate up for a good while (around 30 minutes). In football we called these Suicide Drills. The whole point is to get the lactic acid out of the muscle and to the liver to be metabolized so that the kidney can filter it out. But back to my original point, I'd recommend taking anything this Matt Rabin guy says with a grain of salt. I get the feeling he doesn't really know what he's talking about.

I doubt a professional sporting team is going to pay an employee to do things to their athletes if they don't demonstrate a benefit to those athletes. Of course there is the placebo effect but that wouldn't affect all the athletes, only some.
@vibusta
@vibusta 6 лет назад

How do they finish so quickly? I've been foam rolling the same places for 30 minutes and the knots keep on reappearing for some reason. This is my first time foam rolling though.
@HVTraining
@HVTraining 8 лет назад
+Woops Knots appear for a number of reasons, including accompanying and supporting muscles being tight, and muscular systems being tight. Try working some of the other muscles that work along with that muscle where the tightness is. You also don't want to spend too much time on one spot. I usually tell my athletes spend about 1-2 minutes MAX for a tight spot, and then move forward to the next spot from there.

Use a professional sports physio. Also there are two types of rollers at least soft and hard shelled. Hard is very painful to use.
@rsstnnr76

This might be a stupid question...but does using something like a foam roller cause any damage to veins and arteries? You're basically smashing all of your muscle, etc. For some reason this always crosses my mind when I watch people foam rolling. I'd like to try it myself, but I don't want to hurt anything.
@syd379
@syd379 9 лет назад
Russ Tanner The only thing to keep in mind when doing this is roll towards your heart! If you don't, you'll be rolling against the valves in your veins and that could cause varicose veins, as you're pushing blood in the OPPOSITE direction that it is meant to go. However, this doesn't really matter on your back or sides because the valves aren't really as prominent- so just if you're rolling on your front like your quads. Also you really shouldn't roll on the back of your knees and inside of your elbows- those places are less protected. Hope all this helps! It's a really great practice, and your body is a lot more protected than you think!

syd379 I did it toward my heart in the pectoralis minor and infraspinatus area and also in the back and lats and I feel that my shoulders are not in their neutral position, I just feel weird just like I lost muscles. I'm worried !
@syd379
@syd379 9 лет назад
Don't be worried! A lot of people don't know that it's just best to go away from your heart since that's the way your veins work. If you feel your shoulders may be a little messed up, get to a chiropractor! Foam rolling on that spot is good, but I normally use a tennis ball or a lacrosse ball on the front and back of my shoulder. It's easier to dig into the actual muscle that needs worked on, instead of maneuvering a huge roller over them! james nayci
@Thebigfish0
@Thebigfish0 9 лет назад
syd379 Thank you ! Yes! that's what I actually did. I started out doing self-massage with a tennis ball before I jumped into the foam roller. I wanted to try the foam roller because it looks more popular when I've seen it in many videos but when I did, it feels like it contracts my muscles, it's like they become lean and modified. Maybe for my shoulders I have to pull up?

Owls to Athens... RU-vid is already full of videos warning you specifically against mistakes and how to avoid them. It is not so difficult to understand: 1) There are two directions you can roll a muscle: along the muscle to make it longer, and sideways to make it contract. 2) You want to roll along the muscle. So you must know a bit about how the muscles are attached to the skeleton and which way they run over your body. That's all ;-)
