Melissa, I enjoyed your video, as always. One comment...your logo covered up part of what you were doing when you moved the item closer to the right side of the bench block. Not a biggie, but a little distracting. Just F.Y.I. Do you use a foot pedal and the bench top speed controller together? How do you hook them up? Do you use an SR or an LX motor? I recently purchased the LX with the foot pedal and the bench top speed controller, and the 15 hammer handpiece. (Haven't received it yet, though.) I was just wondering how they were connected. Thanks for any info. You are so good about explaining things in a way that is easy to understand.
Yeah, sorry about that darn logo. UGH. Yes, I do use the foot pedal and speed controller together. I plug the foot pedal into the the controller. It will make sense when you get it. I have the SR Motor. I am glad that, even with the logo blunders, you enjoy the videos. :)
Thanks Melissa! I have yet to use my hammer hand piece to set a bezel; I can see where it would require practice and the right touch. I also liked your use of the wire inside the piece to raise the stone. Do you solder that in place? As always, appreciate your videos. Very informative and helpful.
Didn't know there was a control to adjust the speed of the Foredom. This is a game changer for control of the Hammer Handpiece. Thanks for another great video

Thankyou for this tutorial I have just purchased the fordom sr as I had issues with dremel also I have painful hand im hoping the hammer attachment hels me.

My hammer handpiece just unscrews as I use it. Then the tip falls off . Nothing I have done has been able to correct it. Neither of my flex-shafts are reversible.
Melissa, what did you mean when you said that you "don't want to over do it or you'll stretch the metal and it won't lay over the stone properly" ?? And also what did you mean when you said "your going to use the burnisher to lay every thing back down"? Isn't it already down from the hammer hand piece that you used to set it? Love that hammer hand piece! Thanks!
If you hammer too much the metal will stretch and you will have too much metal as it thins and will begin to flare at the top of the stone. Some people will keep going over an area to try to remove little hammer marks made by the hammer head and will thin it too much. As you get better, these become less of an issue as you begin master your technique. But the burnisher is used to really smooth the metal out afterward. Kind of like spreading and smoothing butter on bread.
Melissa, you are EXTREMELY proficient doing these videos. You seem to cover a point just as I was wondering about it...mind reader?? I especially appreciate your answer on this particular point. I have probably had this very issue doing bezels by hand. I wish I'd know you sell tools as I had just placed my order for my handpiece prior to watching this. I know it takes a lot of planning, setup, equipment, skill in the technique covered, and ability to teach. So I really do appreciate your effort to help me continue to improve skills in this art form I'm so passionate about.
Orly Burg do you mean which motor I used? If I am using it with a controller then I use the SR motor. If I don’t have the controller then I use it with the LX model.
Hi Melissa 👋 long time follower! I recently purchased the hammer hand piece for flush setting diamonds in 2 gold bands that I’m making for our 50th anniversary. My question now is: have you used the diamond pave tip Pavetron, by Euro tool, for texturing?

Would I be able to use this to set a 20 gauge bezel? I have trouble using a hand bezel pusher i such a thick bezel, and am hoping this will be strong enough.
Yes. This will be strong enough, but it will take time. You may want to consider filing a bevel around the top edge of the bezel to thin it out ever so slightly around the top of the stone so the metal moves a bit easier. I would also use fine silver and not sterling.
@@MelissaMuir Thanks Melissa, filing a bezel makes sense. I actually use Argentium, which probably has the same characteristic as sterling in this application -- can you even get fine silver in 20 gauge? Probably have to cut it myself?
HI Melissa! I have had a hammer hand piece for a bit now but just haven't felt comfortable with it. I need to purchase the bezel rocker style anvil point....I think that's my issue....trying to set a bezel with just the point that came with it!! Lol I am going to Tucson also...my first time! I will be there Feb 8 to 12th I think. When will u be there?
Yes, setting a bezel with a point would be difficult. I believe I will be leaving the gem show by the 6th of February. The show I am at is from the 27th of January to the 3rd of February.

Hi, thanks for the video, I found it really useful as I've never seen how the hammer handpiece is used before. Can I ask, when you're using it with the SR motor and the speed controller box, are you also using the foot pedal? Or just the controller box alone? Thank you!
Claire Davis yes. I do use my foot pedal. The control box is in the middle of the foot pedal and flexshaft. So instead of plugging the flexshaft into the foot petal and the foot petal into the wall. You will now have the flexshaft into the control box, the box into the foot pedal and the foot pedal into the wall.
Thank you for coming back to clarify that, it kind of makes sense although I am finding it a bit hard to visualise how it'll all fit together as I don't have the box yet. I guess it'll make more sense when I have that and can see the layout properly. Thanks again! :)
@@MelissaMuir Hi Melissa - I'm in the UK and I have an SR/ with foot pedal; my control box arrived today - Do I need a connecting cable to go between the pedal/ speed dial for the 3 to work together? I have no issue plugging the flex shaft into the control box but I have to unplug the control box power supply to be able to free up the right kind of slot to connect it to the foot pedal - however, the foot pedal connector is very short so the dial ends up on the floor. Additionally, when I plug the pedal into the wall, there's no power flow between them. This leads me to think I'm down a cable? It's a bit confusing but I hope I've articulated it in the least confusing way.
Hello mam, I have a 18000 rpm motor us version, can i use hammer handpiece in this motor or i need another motor to use ? And is there any problem to run that machine slowly by pedal without speed controller ?.
Yes you can use it. The thing about not having a controller is that as they concentrate people tend to push down on the foot pedal. If you take your handpiece over 5,000 rpm then it will wear out. And there really isn’t a good way to know when you have hit that speed.
When it comes to all of my work, up to now, I have used the SR motor from Foredom. I just recently added the LX model which is better suited to the hammer handpiece as it is lower speed and higher torque. So I now have both set up and working. The SR motor is a much more general purpose motor and is what you will find in most jewelry shops. So if you can only afford one, I would highly suggest the SR motor. If you are going to be setting stones and that is what you will primarily use it for, then the LX motor is the one you want.
