Some folks have asked me to do a Video on how to use a GPS. And have asked what type of GPS I use or would recommend. Well it's a GARMIN MAP64 Series. They get incredible Sat reception under heavy cover.
I just bought a Garmin 64sx so this video was very helpful. I subscribed and am looking forward to reviewing all your videos on the Garmin 64. Thanks for posting this.
OMG, WOW what an excellent and very detailed tutorial on setting up and using waypoints and tracks. You are an absolute pro at making instructional videos. In your spare time you should also be a Garmin salesman. You have provided enough info/guidance for me to make a buy decision on this 64 model. Thank you so much again for taking the time to upload this video to YT, Joe the AZ Bear. 1-22-2022
Just picked one up Garmin gpsmap64 and your video was very helpful in understanding how to use and input/program paths on the handheld versions of this model gps ,thankyou very much.
Thank you! This as well as your other video on marking waypoints are excellent. You explained everything extremely well. Just got a 64x and the instruction manual is worthless. Your videos helped me tremendously!
Been a cyclist for a long time, but I've never known about this Garmin GPSMAP series before as my head is deep in Garmin Edge and Wahoo Bolt. I'll be doing a lot of bikepacking trips in the future, you Sir, have just convinced me to look into one of these GPSMAP devices. This looks niftier and more intuitive than the Garmin eTrex series! Thank you for such a mellow and easy to follow tutorial, besides, your voice is very therapeutic too!:) Keep up the good vibes and videos.
Me too, Edge was God, but now I'm going to try the 64st bought used last night. I don't need the competative and social part of the Edge family. Heartrate, cadence and route or logging the map. And I can use it in the canoe on the fjord etc. This will help me a lot the next days when I'm learning to use the new used device 👍
That was very simplistic and very informative. Been eyeing on this Garmin model for a while now but afraid that it just might be too complicated for me to use. Thanks for sharing!
Walter O, Initially I figured that as well but go thru his tutorial a few times to get familiar with the operation. After that see other videos to build on it.
Thanks for the video, I just bought the Garmin 64s to use while I'm quading on the forest roadways out here in BC. Your video will be helpful as I know that I will need to set up weighpoints along the way,
Glad you liked it. They are great little units and sure can come in handy even on the water when fishing for marking underwater structures where fish like to hang out. Once you mark it on the GPS you can always get back to within 3M of it. Takes all the guess work out of it.
Glad it helped! I might be making another GPS video in the nice little while. Not much to do with this time of isolation. I have a couple of other videos I'm working on first. Cheers
Hey NLGhostWolf, excellent video. I bought the GPSMAP65 and definitely needed a how to use it video and you answered that call. It was super important for me to know how to use this device before going on an adventure. However, I plan to use roads to navigate from one waypoint to another and this GPS only does straight line as the crow flies. To use roads I have to buy and install software, but, now I know how to put in waypoints and that is essential. Thanks so much for the video.
Thanks Doug, you are going to love this two part series by Stephen Ricketts ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-XIIk_L4qElU.html He does an outstanding job on explaining waypoints and tracks.
that's great but make sure you practice and learn your GPS and how to Navigate with it where you can't get lost, before venturing off grid. And also always carry a compass. GPS is an electronic device, never put all your faith in an electronic device
Thanks for video. It was really helpful. This was my first time handling a Garmin gpsmap 64sx and I've had a gist out of your video. Thanks alot really
Great video! Just ordered the 64sx from Cabela’s ($229 right now). Thank you for explaining how to use it in detail along with showing the buttons used. I’m a little older and not “tech savvy”. Thanks again!
Hot Dam...just noticed now how I'm now subscribed to after watching some of your Rabbit snares vids a few months back but I'm also realizing it was this video that persuaded me to buy the Garmin 64SX. Thanks for these vids they're really helping me get back into hunting and trapping after being away for 38 years as I stopped at age 17.
Very , very informative. Hell of a good job explaining the the GPSMAP 64. I have had GPS units for 20 years just like most folks but I still learned something. I will need to replacing my 15 year old 60 CSX that died 3-17-19. That was a great unit. Not sure if I will buy the plain 64ST because I bought the TOPO and City Nav DVD's yrs ago with my 60CSX. Anyway thanks for taking the time to explain the GPSMAP 64. Sure wish there was a power port on the GPS for traveling and not have to use up the batteries.
Thanks I'm glad you enjoyed it. Oh yes I would love to see them add Power Ports to the 64's... I would use my all the time on my daily travels on the land both with the ski-doo and Side by Side... and even in my vehicle for that matter. I'm always out exploring new areas for hunting and fishing. Now I just wait until I'm near the place before turning on my GPS with a Power port it would be turned on right from the get go....
Also, thanks for showing the setting for he'd.ddddd..I was putting in waypoints and they were way off and I could not figure out why till I checked that and it was on a different setting.Nothing in instructions I saw said to change that unless I missed it.
Your most welcome but please make sure you practice with your GPS before going off hunting by yourself and please take spare batteries and a compass too. And best of luck on your hunt, but practice before you use...
Congrats, I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoy mine. It sure comes in handy for traveling in the woods and fishing lakes. Once you find some good under water structures, the GPS will bring you right back to them each and every time.
Hey Charlie, your upside-down teardrop is also known as a pin, marker or a balloon. I like balloon because, well it looks like a balloon. Great video. Cheers 🇨🇦
Thanks very much for your informative video. I have a Garmin 64sx coming today. But holy crap. What a hassle to use! Lately I've been using GaiaGPS on my iPhone8, and it's fast and easy. The only reason I spent the money on the Garmin was because I often find myself roaming around out here in the wilderness and suddenly realize I'm in an area where there's no cell service and I haven't downloaded the hi-res topo maps for the region I'm in. So, the Garmin will at least give me some indication of where I am and what's there. Obviously, however, much better to have downloaded the suitable maps in advance for GaiaGPS.
Yes having the downloaded maps is ideal, or the Sat images. But taking the time to learn your GPS system which ever one you chose is key to safe travels. Cheers
I just picked up a Garmin GPSMAP 64csx. Your video has helped a lot to get me started. I'm mostly interested in Geocaching. My old Magellan Meridian (which I still love) is getting old and slow, and this unit is going to (dare I say) replace it. I tried the Magellan Tritan way back but it was a POS and I returned it in two days. And, I don't like the inaccuracies of using my phone for Geocaching.
Hi - thanks for the video and for attending to the follow-up comments. I'm wondering if you can get the unit to take you back to your original point along your breadcrumb trail rather than the shortest possible distance. In hilly terrain this is probably a more likely scenario then just walking the line produced by the 'Find' function.
Yes 100%, I will do a video on that... It's actually a wonderful idea for a video. I have used the breadcrumb trail to mark a trail into a moose before. It was getting dark and I needed to get a trail into the moose for the quad to follow after dark. Learned I should have flagged a couple of tricky spots but other than that the breadcrumb trail took use right back to the moose.
Thanks NLGhostWolf! Way better than sifting through the pdf manual. Just picked up the Garmin gpsmap 64st. I'm guessing it's the next model up Gary has that you mentioned at the end.
@@NLGhostWolf I am having a heck of a time with the gps coordinates web site you shared. I get the map up after entering my address in Sat View however, when I click on the map, no coordinates show up!! Oh, and I did create an account on the site.
@@NLGhostWolf I recently purchased this model, and regarding calibration of the compass, the instructions say there is an option for "calibrate compass" when you're in the compass and press the MENU button. However when I press MENU while in the compass, there are only 3 options and no option for calibrating the compass. I noticed the instructions do show the 64ST model in the pictures. Is this the case for you? Or did you just calibrate the compass by walking around away from buildings when you first pulled it out of the box? Thanks for your time.
Wow interesting, I just want to learn, never had a GPS training before, would b following,I'm very much interested,I usually work in the forest, thanks again
Thanks for this. Hitting Find shows all waypoints, and you scroll down to the one you want. But if you have 1000's of waypoints, can you somehow specify the name of the waypoint you want, and the device will take you right to it? If you can do that, does the device display just that one waypoint, or does it take you to that waypoint within the complete list of waypoints ?
I don't no, the only time I look for waypoints is when I'm in the area of that waypoint and the Garmins do a great job with listing the waypoints by nearest, so that is the feature I always use because it just makes perfect sense to me.
