How to Use a Humidifier for Your Houseplants 💦🌱

Tropical indoor houseplants need more humidity than we give them, especially in the colder months. The solution is to use a humidifier for plants, so here are a few recommendations on how to set one up, where to place it, as well as the one I think is the best cool mist humidifier for the money.
I set the humidistat on mine to about ~50%. With that setting, mine runs for DAYS without needing to be refilled.

The best "humidifier" I ever had was a 35 gallon fresh water fish tank. It kept the humidity stable and had the advantage of providing nutrient-rich water for houseplants when I changed some of the water in the tank. The fish were happy; the plants were happy; and I was happy.

Love this, although I do recommend buying a cheap small humidity monitor that you can keep near your plants, if a single humidifier (with its own monitor) is humidifying an entire room. That way, you can get accurate measurements of the humidity in various areas of a space, rather than what the humidifier itself is measuring, which is the air immediately surrounding the humidifier. For instance, if a humidifer is on the south side of a room, and an AC or heating duct is on the north side of a room, the humidity that the humidifier reports *might* be greater than the humidity on the north side, since your AC system might be moving air and keeping that more distant area dryer. Etc.

Really happy I came across your video! I read your blog post before about the best humidifiers, and I purchased this exact humidifier last week. My one question would be, is it ok that the mist cascades down onto my plants or is it better to just have the mist directed slightly away from them? I worry about mold and such saying as I’m already putting more moisture into the air. I can’t find any resources online about this matter, although upon searching for this answer I came across your blog which in turn led me to your video so I’m definitely going to be watching more of yours! :) thanks so much for the information! Side note for anyone considering buying this humidifier: do it! It’s a great price point and it’s one of the best investment I’ve made for my plants.

It won’t matter much seeing this model is an evaporative one. But, yes boiling will speed up the evaporation of chlorine. Or you can just leave a pan of water out and the chlorine will evaporate out over 24 hours. You’ll need a filter if you want to remove fluoride from tap water though. :)

@kylemarks4188
@kylemarks4188 4 года назад
Different humidifiers cover a different amount of space, but I’ve seen a lot online or in stores that can cover a pretty wide space so one should be enough. Plus plants being grouped together help maintain the humidity level! As far as having a wood floor If your humidifier is up high- like on a shelf or table, it shouldn’t make the floor wet. Even better is if a fan is running nearby it keeps the mist from gathering too much and the airflow is still good for the plants. A fan also helps level out the humidity across the room to cover more space I’ve read that humidity, as long as it’s not too high, can be good for wood floors and furniture! When wood is too dry temperature shifts can cause warping. According to a few sources online a relative humidity level between 35% and 55% is good for both wood as well as for our skin and respiratory system! Above 55% or 60% is when hardwood flooring can “cup” and cause damage. But so far my humidifier hasn’t damaged the wood in my room- and my floors are from the 60s😂 sorry for rambling, I hope this helps.

Hint:....if you store this for a few days or longer the water cap can seize up and be superglued to the tank, the best way to get it off is with a metal bar so be careful not to break it or just make sure to use a little cooking oil before screwing it back on. I found my humidifier in the recycle area looking brand new but I had a hard time getting the cap off.

I picked this up for work. My last one was smaller ru-vid.comUgkxtD9aJ2m6GU-X1IChQxjn9l31K1A7Kpwj and cuter but the motor burned out within a few months. This one's footprint is a tad bigger but it still doesn't eat up a lot of desk space. Its size and shape blends into the background nicely. This has a good size water container so I don't need to refill more than once a week. I use filtered (not distilled) water because cleaning up after our hard water is tough at work. I like that this has several settings. It's also very quiet. (I have a silence naxi in the next cubicle.) It also hasn't left that terrible while powder, so far, that some humidifiers leave. Been using this for a month or so now and am very happy with my purchase.

If you have an aquarium at home, you don't might not need a humidifier. My ceiling was molded with an aquarium!!! Now I dont have an aquarium but I put an aquarium heater in water of bucket, it works.

My palm has had 2 limbs die very quickly. I think it's my AC, I just bought a humidifier. People are also telling me I could be over/under watering it. So I'm very confused.

Unless your entire house (or room) is filled with plants, I don’t think you need a humidifier. Simply provide a “water tank” for only those plants that require the higher humidity.

Anyone else with forced heat have an issue with water from humidifiers getting into the furnace and causing issues? I tried having a humidifier and Everytime I ran it and got humidity near 50 my furnace would stop working. Found out it was because the water vapor got into a tube which causes furnace to stop running and code out.

How far away do your dry-loving plants need to be from this? I’ve got an open concept house so the plants are all in one large room. I don’t want to kill my succulents and cacti.

I usually arrange my houseplants in clusters so the ones w/ similar care are in the same environment, you may want to do something similar?

Thanks! Sounds like as long as they aren’t in close vicinity, they should be ok. I can put the succulents and cacti about 18 feet away from the ferns.
