If I would have had this 21 years ago I could have been marine of the month. Was watching Sniper and saw Beringer using one and decided to look it up and this video came up. Thanks
Excellent presentation and thank you for taking the time and posting this. With lensatic and baseplate compasses like the Cammenga 3H and Suunto MC-2 global respectively, is there an advantage using a protractor? Thanks
There is a slight advantage because the protractor would be a little more accurate. If you’re using the Suunto MC-2G compass there should be no problem, especially if you’re in the field. Using the compass would be a quicker field method than pulling out a protractor. I learned in the military to use a protractor when it comes to plotting points on a topographical map. The newer compasses today would be just as effective to use. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Mills are something used by the artillery units in the military. Mills are more accurate, but when it comes to land navigation degrees work well. I do not use miIs. I usually just cut them off the protractor so they are not a distractor.
When you convert grid to magnetic do you also have to set an adjustable declination compass as well? I have the Suunto just like yours but I'm confused as to setting it if the grid to compass conversion was done with a protractor.
Good question, once you set your Suunto MC2G built in declination your compass is now synced with your map. You do not have to convert your grid azimuth that you get from the map. So if your protractor reading from your map is 59 degrees then that is what you use on your Suunto compass. You would do your conversion from a map when you have a compass that does not have a built in declination scale. There is a saying when you have a compass with an adjustable declination, “Set it and forget it”.
Thanks Sir. excellent!! I'm new in this. So I have a lot of questions but the one that I want to ask now is that I have a protractor but the numbers are inverted . there's an explanation for that ? Is a mistake from the factory? Thanks 👍
Flip it. It's not a mistake. It's the first question everyone asks... 🤣 If you see here in the video, the numbers are inverted like 5 4 3 2 1 and not 1 2 3 4 5 etc...
