How To Use A Moss Pole For Climbing House Plants

In this video I show you how to use a moss pole to get large leaves! I see so many people get nice new moss poles only to waste the precious vertical space! This is the best way to start your plants on a pole! This way your aroids can take full advantage of the moss pole and the mechanics behind them in order to get bigger more mature leaves faster!
The less vertical space you have the sooner you will have to derail the good growth by taking a top cutting to start over!

Dude, why are you the first person that I've ever seen say ANYTHING related to this!? That's crazy. Thank you. This literally changed all of my plants I have on sticks in my case. And also gave me a much better understanding of how the plant actually goes about attaching to the pole.
@TechplantChannel
@TechplantChannel 9 месяцев назад
lol I have no idea, but there are a few people who illustrate this with more mature plants but I think it gets lost with the flood of other videos.

@TechplantChannel and now that I think of it, plants that had little babies at the bottom lost the top big vines but the ones near the bottom sustained a huge majority of the top of the plant after they had died off and then those are the vines that ended up being attached. Makes sense now that I know

Great video, and thanks for bringing light to this issue. About the plant reaching the top of the pole, Sydney Plant Guy (the moss pole god) has a great way to “trick” the plant into continuing its growth to ginormous proportions. He has his DYI pole method down pat, which can be extended with 2 x 90cm poles (180cm total). When the plant reaches the top of the 2nd pole, he chops the vine at the joint between the 2 poles, and then attach a fresh pole on top of the previous top pole. He repeats this process so in essence the plant will be growing to infinity when in fact the setup remains at 180cm. And the plant can survive the chop without a blink because the majority of the root system is within the pole (his poles are wire mesh outside with hollow center filled w moss). His leaves are ginormous. Sorry to detract from your content but I think it is good further reference.

yeah his method works great! I have no proof of this next statement, but i think its good to give them a long run way initially to get to that mature size and once they hit that size his extension method works really well. but i have a "feeling" that when you cut them it sorta shocks them a little bit so its good to have that long initial runway. but who knows. his plants are incredible and thanks for taking the time to comment!

Tell em! It doesn't count as being on the pole unless it's grabbing it on its own.

Brilliant! No one had explained this to me in the past. So with the dubia that’s climbing up the wood, you just want the nodes to feel pressed up against something stable? They don’t actually need to stick the air roots into anything? I ask because I have some plants that need supports but I don’t like the look or maintenance of moss poles and am planning on use wood or wire trellises.
@TechplantChannel
@TechplantChannel 9 месяцев назад
you can do wooden planks, look up "everything plants" on youtube, he has a ton of plants climbing planks and they are getting HUGE. the key is getting them started and they will keep rooting to the plank!

@TechplantChannel
@TechplantChannel 8 месяцев назад
yeah i would do waht you can to keep it wet, it might be worth cutting water bottles into strips you can sorta wrap around 70% of the pole to keep in moisture
@axnvn

@@TechplantChannel Thank you for your quick response. Please note my pole is Coco Coir moss pole, not sphagnum moss pole. Should I still mist my Coco Coir moss pole? If I kept it wet, I am worried I might get mold if it doesn't dry out quickly in this cold weather.

Yeah you are correct, like others have said though 'moss pole' has become a sort of generic term for any material pole besides like straight up wooden planks
