Good grip, good form, good stance. One thing though, DROP the pick, don't swing it down. Gravity is already working, and the pick weighs 5-9lbs. There's no need to force it in the direction its going to move anyway. This tool is for loosening the work area for other tools. If you work harder now, well, you still have to work later... so it's best we work smarter instead. I'd say enjoy your work, but if you're here, you're trying to fix the fact that you already don't 😉

No offense to the content creator, but this is not a pickaxe, it's a mattock. Also, I feel it important to state for anyone truly trying to learn how to use this tool... NEVER swing it over your head. Doing so is the most common way to injure yourself or others. This is a powerful digging tool and does not need to be raised more than waist height to achieve sufficient effect. If you find yourself fighting dirt with a mattock, that is a sign that the dirt is too hard and should be softened with 1 or 2 water soakings an hour before working it. I repeat, please do not swing this tool over your head... yes, the technique in this video provides maximum kinetic energy, but that is not necessary for this tool to be effective and it puts yourself at risk of grave head injury.

What if you're using it to cut or break apart shrub/tree roots, etc.?
@bbbbb1887
@bbbbb1887 2 года назад
@@sethmoking Mattocks still shouldn't need to be swung over the head to cut through roots. If you find the need to do so, consider getting a heavier mattock (5lb head vs 2.5lb head) or use a more specialized tool like a hatchet or axe (one with a blade you don't care about hitting dirt). I know it's tempting to just power through and do overhead swings, but that's one of the only ways to injure yourself with this tool and it won't be an injury you'll soon forget.

I always called the tool a mattock, the pick I use has a pointed end on both sides. Some do have an axe and adze on the same tool.

This video is inaccurate in just about every way. First, picks are for picking. You usually don't bring it over your head (rarely ever, if ever). You could kill someone working near you. You're using way too much energy to swing the pick. It's a pick, you're supposed to pick with it. It's doesn't require much energy. The other side of it is for pulling out what you broken up with the pick. You don't slam that side into the ground, you use it to drag it out what's already loose. The technique (or lack of technique) that you're using wouldn't work at all on harder ground (rock, stone, bedrock).

Never swing the pick Behind your body as it could impale someone stomach or hit their head, depending on the timing of swing and impact.

TY sooo much! I worry about my dad because he doesn't get it and he wants to swing the pickaxe wrong and I try to tell him it takes like 03 and gravity does its job and then his form it's going to hurt him but he wants to go ahead and do it a different way! LOL maybe I can show him your video and he'll believe me 😊
