After watching this video about a year ago, I was dispatched to a car versus kid on a bicycle and he had a fractured forearm and I used a SAM splint to make a sugar tong for the kid. Thanks!!

Self adhesive conforming bandage would be best to hold splint. It attaches and sticks to its self but is not sticky to the touch or stick to skin. A bit like velcro. Saves the need for tape. 👊🏻

I just recently had a tib/fib fracture in a motorcycle accident and this splint is 1000 times better then the splint they had in the ambulance. Would of loved to get my leg as stable as her arm was with the sam splint

Rather late to comment on this, but I've only just found your channel (already a big fan), just thought I would chip in, my first aid instructor taught us to use the opposite limb to measure up the splint. i.e. if the right arm was broken measure the splint up on the left arm then transfer it over.

Loved the Video. As a Medical Student and avid Hiker it's good to see these in use. Would love to see some more applications of them in use. C-Spine Collars, or ankles etc. I know the basics of them but it's always good to see how a professional would do it. Cheers Mark

I have had more than my fair share of broken bones in my life so im pretty aware of the pain associated with them and the techniques used on me previously by paramedics. This is a product not been used on me, it does look to be an effective splint however i also know it would be pretty darn painful to shape around the break. Once secured it would be very effective. I realise the pain wont be such an issue if you were being treated by a paramedic as they can give you fast effecting pain relief, but if you are anyone else you wont have access to sufficient fast action pain relieving medications so this would be quite painful to put on, that being said I would have one or two of these in my medkit however I would also have what has previously been used on me which is Inflatable Splint. They are as it sounds effectively a blow up sock that inflates to wrap around and secure the injured bone. Great product that takes up very little space though isnt cheap.

What about cutting the sam splint to start just past the elbow and cupping it underneath, wrapping and then using a sling? That seems more practical to me in order to support the limb.
@johnzaleski5182
@johnzaleski5182 Год назад
My only issue with the wrap is being able to verify radial pulse post application. I always leave a little gap to verify distal pulses post application.

Seems like that splint manipulation including elbow adjustment at end would REALLY HURT more than just holding it still yourself

Yeah, the moulding of the elbow look pretty forceful and painful.

Would it make sense to use the sugar tong on any/every forearm fracture?

So, instead of paying attention like I should, I was just wondering why you didn't refer to your niece by her name, but just insisted on calling her "the niece". I am not a smart man. Anyway, all the best to your and the niece, hope she recovers well.

Could you wrap the sam splint with a compressed / rolled gauze too medical tape to hold it or would this not work as well? Does the wrap need to be elastic?
@MedWild
@MedWild 9 лет назад
Matt A Elastic material (ace wrap, coban, etc) would probably work best, but if a roll of guaze is all you have- it could probably help maintain the splint in place to some degree. Thanks for the comment
@bodstrup

What would your use as the best material to wrap around the arm before applying the splint - in order to pad pressure points and absorb a bit of moisture ? ACE Wrap ? I imagine, the skin can become quite irritated after a couple of hours in the sun or other hot environment. Regards, Michael

A common thing you can use is a cut up t-shirt, or roller gauze to pad prior to splinting.
