See also my blog post at sharpologist.com/2019/11/4-wa... A shave stick is a specialized shave soap designed to be applied directly on the skin. Here are four different ways to use a shave stick.
I found a new brush and 2 shave sticks that were my fathers, ( he passed away 10 years ago) they were brand new and i had a go, but was not sure of the technique. So this video was very helpful. Thank you
was looking for a traveling option outside of lugging a bowl around to make lather. Thank you for the video! gonna order a shave stick to keep in my bag.
I used to hold the stick with my hand and work up a lather with a wet shaving brush like the "war-time movies" example below, but instead of using a bowl I applied the lather directly from the brush and stick on to my face.
I bought my first shave stick a while back. It's Marlborough by D R Harris. I used it originally for travel but use it now even when I'm not traveling. Rub on a dab, hit it with a wet brush, and BOOM the lather explodes with more than enough for a second pass and maybe third if you really need it.
I just started wet shaving about 3 weeks ago. I'm not sure what products to try, but I tried a La Toja stick and it was fantastic! Thanks for the informative videos, I'm learning a lot!
5th way for a bowl latherer when travelling: load the brush directly from the shave stick and then make the lather in a bowl as usual. There are some old British war-time movies where servicemen can be seen using this method.
Great to see a video from you again, Mark! Nice video! I say method #3 is for me. I apply the shave stick all over my whiskers and build the lather on my face with a brush. Cheers! -Rob
I've got no interest in shave sticks, but I'm glad mantic is back. I've watched quite a few of the shaving RU-vidrs, and mantic is really the best teacher of them all. Watch and pay close attention. If you do, you won't need to watch anyone else. A gift to RU-vid and shaving in general.
In my 60s and I’ve just had to buy a shave stick for the very first time! Unbelievable! I usually love using cream with a brush to sculpt the old goatee, but away on a visit had no choice but to buy a stick. What do I do with something that looks like the guts of a Pritt stick?! Wizard video sorted me out. Thanks Mantic, you’re the dude!
I use Arko and la troja and love them. I also use dove soap the same way, by rubbing it on my wet face and then brush lathering. Pears and other glycerin soaps work that way also.
I have Arko, and Palmolive. I do love them and use them by applying it straight to the face! I plan on getting a TABAC shave stick and some from “Momma Bear” I seen she has a large selection of shave sticks to choose from
@mantic59 even though I've been wet shaving over a year now I was really struggling to get a good shave until a few days ago to my shock and horror so I'm passing this on to all I now start my shave with a very hot towel on my face anywhere from 5-8 minutes lather up and shave the results are amazing when I use a feather no nicks cuts or weepers
What I like to do is take sample soap or even soap from the tub, buy the plastic empty shave stick container at Maggards, and then pack it with different layers of soap. The best way I can describe it is like the multi flavored Lifesaver roll of candy. I have three made up so far and take them on trips. I like the different scents I get from my own stick vs. Arko or Derby. If you have time and extra soap try making your own stick and see what you think.
I have a Palmolive stick in my travel bag at all times so it's my go to shave soap when on the road. I realized I had several shave sticks so I actually pressed some of them (Arko, Tabac) into containers to be used as other soaps with a brush. I like them better like that. I did see you have a CodeZero shave stick, I left that as it was in it's heavy holder of metal. Interesting that CodeZero which is targeting an environmentally conscious market uses a metal, even though it's recyclable, which will always have a climate impact many multiples of any plastic holder or even worse vs those sticks with just a paper wrapping. Anyways, King of Shaves has always had good products as I see it so I won't hold that against it.
