The Harley dealership wants $1,700 to run wires through my new handlebars and solder the connections. So not including the wire, solder and solder gun, this video saved me about $1,670!! Thanks.

I'm a 54 yr old Aussie and not too proud to say that I'm here 'learning how to solder', having never done so before. Thanks for the tips and your time. This Interweb and RU-vid are really just "the ants pants", eh? I, honestly would have put the solder to the tip of the Iron, not the wire or metal that I wish to join together. This helped heaps. Cheers !!

You did well. What I find is coating the copper wire with a flux paste (a "tinning flux") greatly helps in heat transfer and wetting as well as preventing copper oxides from forming. The solder flows almost instantaneously all over the fluxed joint (capillary action). That way you aren't applying as much heat to the join and your coating/insulation will not melt.

two small things - with the first example, if you do use heat shrink tubing, usually you need to already have it on one of the wires or else you'll be outta luck. also, if you don't have wire strippers handy, you can melt the sheath of the wire off with just a little application of flame. slightly melt it and it tugs right off.

Thanks so much for this video! I have soldered copper tubing and do pretty well at that, but in terms of wiring I wasn't applying the principal of heating the wire joint (as you would heat the tubing joint to draw in the solder). I made a big mess of the electronics of a nice electric guitar ... Now I think I can redo it much better!

@AIexanderHartdegen
@AIexanderHartdegen 13 лет назад
@LauxHawk it depend of the size of your soldering. If you need to solder big power connectors on a PCB, you need 1, or 2 mm diameter of tin. For the classics components, you can use 0,5, 0,7, or 1mm. If you need to solder very fine chip, it's sure you need 0,4mm diametere tin. In fact, there is some soldering technique where diameter is not very important, cause only the melting tin on the tip of the iron is used by "drag" on the component. So, all diameters are good.

A lot of people I know who are just getting into soldering and electronics say that soldering is a huge pain in the ass. I found the biggest reason is because they're using little 5 dollar radioshack irons. They work for really basic projects and things like that but if you're going to do anything more advanced they're useless. I highly recommend getting a good quality soldering station. It makes all the difference in the world.

One other point: depending upon the nature of the joint you may not want to "flick" off any excess solder as it could cause a cold solder joint that could possibly be unable to pass current through it properly. Better to just go easy when applying the solder to begin with.
