From www.kevincaron.com - Join artist Kevin Caron as he does a first-time test drive of a Parker spool gun on Everlast's MTS 275 Lighting multiprocess welder to weld some aluminum ....
Kevin Caron is scrubbing the edges of some 16 gauge aluminum with a stainless steel brush so he can weld it with a Parker spool gun. He's never used this spool gun with this machine before. Let's see how well it works!
This spool gun has a couple of nice features. It has an onboard wire feed control right on the gun so you don't have to walk back to the welder to adjust it. Inside, the gun feed has a clamp and an idler wheel. Kevin Caron shows the feed roller and the aluminum welding wire barely sticking past it. The aluminum wire feeds off of the spool, down through the gun. It's tightened by pulling the idler against the feed wheel. Now the aluminum is pinched and will feed when you pull the trigger.
Another nice feature is a break on the spool that keeps the wire from continuing to spool when you don't want it to. That prevents a big rat's nest inside the gun.
Next Kevin Caron shows the control screen on the Everlast Lightning MTS 275 multiprocess welder. To set up the spool gun, scroll through the menu until you get to MIG aluminum. Another window pops up. Press your left arrow to go to "control." You see "spool gun," "2T" and "4T." You can use either 2T or 4T with the spool gun. (Kevin Caron uses "spool gun" and "2T.")
Then Kevin Caron selects "home" on the screen. Now the spool gun is live and ready to go.
Next just set up whatever other parameters you want, including preflow, starting wire feed speed and burnback, which Kevin Caron has turned off. There's also upslope, which he has turned off. The spot stitch timer is also turned off. Downslope is set to zero. End wire feed is at 60, and post flow is set at .7. The wire feed is now adjusted on the gun. Voltage is set at 16.3.
Kevin Caron puts on his welding safety equipment and holds together two pieces of aluminum. He tacks the two pieces of metal in place, then runs a bead.
He shows the weld. It started out shaky and burned through in a few places - his fault. Then he sped up a bit with a little faster forward motion, which looks a little better. Still, Kevin Caron wants to adjust some settings, dropping the voltage from 16.5 to 15.5 and playing with the wire feed. He also pulls the weld instead of pushing it.
Kevin Caron shows the results. He's happier with the weld this time, but still thinks the settings could use some more adjusting, including the conductance.
Once he gets more comfortable with it, though, Kevin Caron thinks this spool gun on Everlast's MTS 275 Lightning will really help with Weeping Tree, the big aluminum sculpture he's working on. Using the spool gun will allow him do some long runs and not have to TIG weld overhead.
So that's the Everlast MTS 275 Lightning with the Parker spool gun for welding aluminum. He's Kevin Caron, and you're his very favorite people because you're out here watching.

I use these types of gun a lot Kevin, particularly when I am welding a baseplate onto a alloy core of a head that we put copper concentric tubes inside, I then seal the copper parts that contacts the alloy core, then put it into a mould and cast a polyurethane rubber in the shape of the adult head. I do between 7 and 14 a week plus switching onto mild steel and stainless steel. It’s an interesting job and I love fabrication aspect. Love the work Kevin, all the best wishes to you and your wonderful family. Take care….phil

I have been deciding whether to get an aluminum spool gun added to my unimig viper 182 or buy a tig welder. I'd prefer the spool gun but was led to believe you couldn't weld 16 gauge (1.5mm ) with this type of welding equipment however you have shown it is definitely possible. I'm not looking for the best looking welds but as long as they are neat and strong that is all I need. Thanks for sharing

Looks like a great spool gun and you will get good use of it. Just a couple things to help you, always brush one way not back and forth when cleaning the aluminum then clean again with acetone and never pull a spool gun always push when doing aluminum, at least this has been my experience as you get better gas coverage and cleaning that way. Hope you will do some videos on the aluminum sculpture you are working on.
@Michaelkv9if
@Michaelkv9if 4 года назад
Disagree on push vs. pull. It's not spool gun vs tweco style either. Aluminum likes heat, but spatters like crazy when pushing from my experience. I pull the bead, low feed, medium speed. My little Lincoln ST-100 wire arc can lay some pretty welds on aluminum and even copper with that method. My advice... Don't get too fancy. Use your machine, know your machine, weld where your machine is happy.
@bruced1429
@bruced1429 4 года назад
you may disagree and continue to pull your aluminum welds but you will have poor gas coverage and contamination in the weld. There are plenty of videos on the subject from Weld.com and Welding tricks and tips and many others. If you push the weld you will have little splatter .
@Michaelkv9if
@Michaelkv9if 4 года назад
@@bruced1429 I appreciate the reply, and we will agree to disagree. I only push when I Tig. It works perfectly for me to pull wire feed. Wand angle also makes a huge difference, there are many variables that make the end result what it is, not just push v pull.

KENVIN, ALWAYS “PUSH” FOR “ALUMINUM”!!!
@bobhumphries3998
@bobhumphries3998 4 года назад
To my knowledge you always push aluminum...unless there is no option. I have always had great results pushing. If you don't get good results pushing adjust your parameters. Also I couldn't tell from the video but it looked like the stickout was a little short, aluminum should be about 3/4" stickout. I apologize for being a little critical, I love your videos. Take care and thanks for posting.

I have the same PARKER DSP 360 SPOOL GUN gun but the aluminum control button doesn't work. I can't adjust the speed of my wire from the gun. What can I do to fix it? I have a POWERMTS 251SI machine

There are only three real controls on MIG. Most welders have no idea what each actually does to the weld. 1) Wire feed speed increases amperage . Amperage is penetration, 2) Travel speed and nozzle position determines the size of the bead. 3) Voltage shapes the puddle. These components should be adjusted in order. When balanced they should provide good penetration into the base metal, leave an adequate properly shaped bead with enough filler to provide strength without defects, and be shaped to provide minimum waste of time and filler on grinding excess or cleaning. Each variation of a component affects the others. Finally, whipping or manipulating the puddle changes the weld transfer each time you change direction inviting defects. MIG welding is made for robots. Get it adjusted right. Trying to emulate a "stack-o-dimes" TIG bead is counter-productive.

Hi Kevin... a question about the spool gun. I have a Everlast MTS 225 and want to get a parker dsp spool gun. The gun will need to be wired to a plug to suit. I cannot however find any pin out diagram to the control plug on the Everlast machine. There are 7 cables on the spool gun but 2 of them don't appear to be needed which according to the spool gun pin out diagrams do appear to be needed.

I ordered my spool gun right from Everlast. They sent a Parker spool gun and it works great! Yes, it is expensive but it works right out of the box.

I still don’t understand how a spool gun is any different than a MiG gun with a aluminum wire roll... accept on the hand. I don’t get what the spool gun changes to allow aluminum welding that again a standard MiG gun with a spool or aluminum wire couldn’t do.
@KevincaronSculpture
@KevincaronSculpture 4 года назад
This from www.millerwelds.com Spool guns improve the "feedability" of aluminum wire by locating a small, 1-lb. (4-inch diameter) spool of wire on a pistol-grip style gun. Because spool guns only need to feed the wire just a few inches before it hits the weld puddle, they eliminate the potential problems created by pushing soft aluminum wire 10 or 15 feet through a regular gun. By using a spool gun, you'll spend more time making better welds and less time cussing at a "bird nest" of wire tangled around your drive rolls. The Everlast Imig 253dpi is set up for aluminum. With a Teflon liner in the cable and the correct drive rollers it will feed and weld aluminum just fine. But don't except to get more then a few feet from the machine without a push-pull gun.
