This week Neal takes a lesson request from chaos2themaxx on how to use the whammy bar. He'll give you some awesome tips on how it works and how to use it. Tip of the week is on feedback control. We have sound limitations in the studio so the feedback tip is not at full volume level and you won't hear the effect but if you follow the tip you'll be in feedback heaven!

@1nfuzion The jazz sounding chords were something I made up for this episode. It's kind of a jazzed up version of a blues turnaround Emin7, D, Cmaj7, B9. Glad u liked it, thanks! ~Neal

I played my strat for 15 years and never put the bar on until about 3 months ago. So far it seems kind of fun but gimicky. The dropping the pitch is cool, but pretty much everything else I've learned to do with my hand.

Yeah, I've run into a few things you must have the tremolo for. I actually switched to a les Paul not longer after that and I wish I had one on here. But keep in mind, I'm not a pro. Just a dude that likes to play. I will say this though, the humbuckers kick ass! Lol

@1122CHINA Yes, the dive bomb works great on fender trems. My first guitar was a Strat. It may go out of tune a little and you can't usually pull up like I'm doing in this video. Dive-bombs work fine though. Give it a light tug up after if it's out of tune. It won't always be perfect but it helps. ~Neal

@Thorshammer172 if it's hitting the wood, that would be an option. make sure the bridge is level when you're not using it, this could effect the range of motion. (if it's resting at an angle instead of flat) -Neal
@GuitarTricks
@GuitarTricks 12 лет назад
@deathrider1432 It can cause your guitar to go out of tune easily, depending on the type of whammy bar. But it won't damage your guitar unless you do something crazy with it. -Neal

The spring tension on the back have to equal the string tension (thanks carl verheyen). Basically, you have to adjust the springs so that using the whammy returns the strings to the same position. If the tuners are cheap or have a lot of give away, you will need locking tuners. In addition the nut and saddles should allow the strings to slip as much as possible. If the string is stuck in the nut it will definitely be a problem. Good luck:)
@GuitarTricks
@GuitarTricks 12 лет назад
@watarball there are springs in the back, you may have too many? 3 springs is usually good, depending on how strong they are. -Neal
@GuitarTricks
@GuitarTricks 13 лет назад
@Fjarkinn1 yes, by taking out one of the springs in the back. It's the least technical thing you can do on a strat.

@GuitarTricks

@991e if all 5 springs are in (back) then it's really tough to use. You might try taking out a spring. This will change your action though and you'll have to at least re-tune the guitar. -Neal

@kjrody21 On some tremolos you can. This is a Kahler brand and it goes up and down. You can do it a little on some strats and most Floyd Rose tremolos allow you to lift up. -Neal

@GuitarTricks

@airbendernaruto5 It looks like this model doesn't have a locking nut? This will make it go out of tune easily. You can rub the tip of a pencil in the nut grooves at the headstock or use a little olive/vegetable oil. Hard to dive bomb? There are springs in the back and you may need to take one out to adjust tension. -Neal

There is a big difference between different types of Trem systems. For getting those big dive bombs and such you really need some type of locking system like the Floyde Rose or Wilkenson. The trem system on guitars like the Strat are not made for dive bombing and getting most of the tricks that you saw here.
@GuitarTricks

@maghari6667 if you don't have locking nuts, you can use pencil lead in the grooves where the strings lay. (nut) it's usually white and plastic. -Neal

If you mean it's hard to depress the bar, you can remove the plastic plate in back of the guitar and take out one of the springs, if you're playing on a Stratocaster type guitar.

Can i use tremolo bar or vibrato arm without the locking nut??
@jubjub905
@jubjub905 11 лет назад
edge bridge is strictly ibanez. also ive got a start and abuse the trem and keep perfect tuning, to help i put graphite in the saddles and nut, and less amount of string turns around the tuner. ive got locking tuners so i have no full wind. if its a vintage style 6 point term, take out or loosen the middle 4 screws so you have less resistance and it'll stabilize the tuning better

@StickTrupa By one, then take it to a guitar place that will route your guitar and put it in for you, but the trem itself will cost around a couple hundred and the routing will be expnsive too.
@monochromeEARTH
@monochromeEARTH 13 лет назад
also, i just messed around with my start a few days before seeing this, but i loosened the screws in the cavity a bit, and it raised the bottom of the bridge, so it's at a small angle, so i can flutter and do pullbacks and all that jazz, its not neeeded to put the arm behind the guitar, unless that's what's most comfortable for you
