How to Use AC2s In Mechwarrior 5 Un-modded

How to successfully use autocannon 2s as primary weapons in vanilla (un-modded, DLCs included) Mechwarrior 5.
In summary:
-End game missions (90+ difficulty)
-Profit achieved even working for a faction for which I have a negative 5 rating.
-AC2-outfitted mech controlled by AI out-performed a hero mech with quad ER LLasers and an SRM 10.
-Approximate cost to buy, upgrade, and outfit a mech for primary use of AC2s is 10-20 million C-bills.
-Approximate in-game time to upgrade and outfit a mech with an AC2 build: 120-150 in-game days.
-Game includes all DLCs and no mods.
The autocannon 2 is a largely overlooked weapon in Mechwarrior 5. It's heavy, doesn't do much damage, and high-level variants are expensive. By the time you reach end game, larger ballistics and fewer hard points define most mech builds.
However, I believe the AC2 performs well as a general use, high rate-of-fire, and long range weapon but only when used in groups. I have outfitted 3 different mechs with AC2s and led them on successful, end-game, high difficulty missions. Not only were they successful damage dealers, but the AI out-damaged an AI-controlled hero mech that was used as a control.
Problems with the AC2:
-At 6 tons, they are heavy for their damage output.
-Low damage.
-At least 4 AC2s are required late-game to do significant damage.
-Low tier ones are not very useful, and high tier ones can be expensive.
- Many mechs play poorly with it because they try to balance their builds with other weapons and thus suffer from overheating/low ammunition,
-Your AC2s need to be treated as the main weapon on the mech, with upgrades specifically for them, and thousands of rounds of ammunition.
Benefits of the AC2 are:
-Incredible accuracy, even at extreme range.
-Extreme long range enables crippling/destroying many enemies before they reach a distance where their weapons are effective.
-Highly effective against structures.
-Lightest of the Autocannon.
-Extremely low heat build up.
-High rate of fire.
-Plentiful ammunition (one ton holds 200 rounds).
-Easy to come by, so not impossible to replace if the component is destroyed.
-Multiple AC2s stacked have an extreme-range shotgun-like effect. Much like an LBX autocannon, but with a significantly higher rate of fire.
If you have been struggling to find a place for AC2s in your inventory, I hope this video helps.
My next video will be a modded version of the game where I try out AC2 builds.
Subsequent videos will be testing the viability of various other builds and often overlooked weapons. I check forums and online communities regularly for new weapons, mechs, and builds to try out.
Leave a comment here, on the Steam discussion page for the game, or on reddit.com/r/mechwarrior5, if you are curious/want help with the following:
-Specific weapon/equipment usage.
-Viability of a mech chasis.
-Campaign/mission help.
-Modding.
-Non-traditional mech builds.
-AI direction and control (getting them not to be useless).
Be kind, this is my first video of this kind.
I'm just doing this for fun while I have some time off from work and school.

A really fun concept for a series! Keep up the great work and I can't wait to see what you come up with!

Maybe you're losing your arms quickly because all that ammo will crit explode immediately once the armor's gone? Also, you could probably fight for a month with that much AC/2 ammo.

LOL thanks! The arm loss happens on other builds though too. Just the nature of the mech. I had a defense mission today with 40 enemies and worked through about 2500 ammo.

Hey, nice video man! Here is a little trick/feature-not-a-bug: If you order your ai to walk into pickup zone(it works with all cross the zone border kind of mission tasks) and then switch to them with Y button you can safely walk around and you will be picked up only if you actively cross the border from outside to inside

If you've running 4x tier 5 UAC5s, everything melts. That's how I run my carapace.

👏🙂 Very interesting. I was just googling if using AC2 was viable.

It's good damage but I think a Battlemaster with 6xSB M lasers yield better DPS and the tonnage saved will allow you to be able to handle mounting more specialized longer range weapons like a LRM10 and LLaser. Plus even if a mech runs up on you you can beat it to death with a couple 35 damage punches to rip holes in sections.

I know the Battlemaster is a beast, but I got a soft spot for the ECM version which drops 2 of the torso m lasers.

At a certain point, your mech is so slow that a 15% boost won't amount to much. Looking at you ANH and URB.

Love the name, nice to see another Pratchett fan. Build is good, but there's a better one to try out, if you get the time. Annihilator AC2 or AC5 build (AC5 has much more oomf. UAC5, more so.) There's an Annie that has, I believe, 5 or 6 ballistic hardpoints. Check it out? Cheers!

Since you didn't run out of ammo on the BW, maybe drop two tons and give her a total of four medium lasers?

annihilator dominates with 4xlb10-sld. mechs under your crosshair will just melt within seconds.

I know this is coming out of nowhere, but this game has given me respect for LRMs. All too often do I try to angle around a hill or another obstacle just to make the shot. Doing this inside a difficult mission wastes time and allows me to soak more damage unfortunately. But just have a single LRM 10 to deal with tanks/vtols is the best. I am going to retry the career mode where I focus on LRMs/SSRMs with all the upgrades centered around missiles and radar function since they're not that hard to unlock.

Just make sure the AI lance mechs are not using lrms or srms cause they never use them well and tend to explode from what I have seen.
@trevinsingh9390
@trevinsingh9390 2 года назад
@@ClnlBogey The AI in general can be quite bad, but not having to scale a hill to make a shot against tanks is best. I usually opt for a single LRM 10 just for those pests. But I agree, the AI uses SRMs in the most useless ways possible at time, like trying to shoot them 300-400m.
@Vendemiair
@Vendemiair 2 года назад
@@ClnlBogey You're not building your lance correctly if you have issues with the AI using LRMs. The AI does perfectly well with LRMs, you just need to set up things correctly (like weapon grouping, and yes, the AI does use weapon grouping).
