How to Use an Economical Yarn Winder 

Oh my gosh I didn’t know the little arm pulled out even farther! Mine kept falling over 😅 thank you! Such a simple answer but made my life so much better haha

I love my ball winder. This is a nice intro to using one. I have a useful tip if you'd like to use it: I fold up the ball band and slide it in the center of the cake as I am pulling it off the winder so it's snug in the center and if the yarn lays around awhile before I use it, I have all the yarn info. but....I don't pull from the center when I knit or crochet. I unwind from the outside that way the cake doesn't collapse. It just shrinks as I use the yarn.

I bought this winder. I really like it. When I am done spinning the yarn cake I put a bobby pin so it won’t unwind. And can pull from the middle when I wanna use the yarn for crocheting. Hope this little hack help someone else too…TOODLES…👍👍👍👍🌟🌟🌟

I had this winder for a really long time and used it a bunch. Mine finally broke but, boy - I used it a lot!

thanks. I was hesitant to purchase this because it didin't seem substantial. But it arrived, and I'm very glad I bought it. I knit and crochet a lot of hats for charity and the "cakes" store and work better for that. Also I'm an elderly woman and I tend to drop things....like a ball of yarn and then must chase it to bring it back under control. : ). Thanks. I've just bought a winder to make my cone wools easier to use. I thought the guide flopping about at the back was a pain. Now I know how to use it properly.

if you make a larger plate..the part that the yarn sits on...cut a hole to fit the base of winder and you can put ALL the yarn on 😃 make ut from hard plastic

I have that yarn winder ,my hubby bought it for me off eBay.. I'm in the UK we paid about 7 GBP almost 3 yrs ago now.. I have noticed they have gone up in price now .. The winder is great ,I do agree it isn't all that good on silky shiney yarn, I've used loads of different brands of yarn and it works fine ..xx

I bought one of these and hate it. The gears jump all the time, my husband is a mechanic and he could not see any malformation with the gears.. Also I wind it carefully but it always unwinds from the cake messy. It never unwinds neatly, always knots. And this is all from the inside, not outside. Am looking at buying another one, different brand. I donated mine to a thrift store.

Have used a winder from a famous yarn company retailer and it broke after just about a dozen uses. Was very disappointed and in reading on-line reviews almost all have the same problems. Decided to go back to winding my hand.

I have this winder and I can not get it to wind like you can on yours! Mine winds the yarn on an angle round and round, but it doesn't crisscross it makes an angle circle..so when I pull it off it just falls apart! I put the winder together right and I'm winding it the right direction and have it clamped on a table and I put a little tension on the yarn and wind at a medium speed and I have tried several times all with the same outcome! I am disappointed and frustrated with this winder! I'll just go back to hand winding my yarn on a thick rod, the ball comes out perfect every time!

I'm not sure how you're managing to get the cake the full size of the bobbin. I just can't get it to happen on mine. It might be the yarn itself, I guess.

I have one of these winders, but do not like my cakes. When I pull from the center it comes out gunky and all twisted and messed. Also my winder jumps sometimes and the workings makes loud clicking noises.

i have the same one, ive done all the things you showed in the video and mine still doesn't turn into a cake. it's just a messy, shapeless ball. I don't understand what I'm doing wrong.

Hi, I have a question. Doesn't the wool get damaged when it is rolled up compared to the skein ? Because the strand is tighter.

I got mine a couple of years ago and the wire clip no longer holds. So I have to hold it out and straight, and the friction was uncomfortable. So I wear some dish gloves or playrex. Also as a hint, when I get to the end I take a small piece of different color yarn and wrap/tie it to the end i will begin with.

Got mine yesterday for £9 and I love it, got yarn burn tho. Lol. Wondering how big i can tho, might add cardboard to the bottom ring thats wider and see if i can do bigger cakes.

I have this exact winder and I can’t seem to create those lovely patterned yarn cakes. My yarn winds around but it only winds in a wide tilted pattern. It’s very bulky and is loose and falls apart. My set-up seems the same. Any suggestions?

I must be doing something wrong because I can't get nearly that amount of yarn on my winder. And the cakes always flop down in the center while I'm crocheting, which led to a HUGE tangled mess. 😭

I have this one and the Winwood model that makes larger cakes. While it's nice to make jumbo cakes, that one requires a bigger over hang to clamp onto..so far, I have only found ONE little end table in my whole house that works, IF I put a magazine underneath the winder(to protect the table). Guess which end table the fam weeded out and moved to the garage? So, my Winwood sits in a box.Sigh.

To get a bigger cake couldn’t you just hold the yarn as it winds instead of the metal bit?? Or would it fall off?? I have a 420 yard skine that’s 8 ozone I don’t wanna cut it buy the $40 one

So, as a person who got here by accident... why not just use the green "I love Yarn" as it is? Also from the middle with the paper wrapper around it? I fail to see why turning it into a "cake" is usefull.
