I went deep sea fishing and when I pulled up the anchor to leave the reef I was fishing on I snagged a Penn 209 rod/reel combo with the UPC sticker still on it. Best catch yet.

I took a charter out of Fort Myers Florida several years back. I favor Shimano baitrunner, open face reels with dual drag. If going deeper I'll use a Penn 114-H 6/0 reel. This was a 6 passenger charter, 2 father-son pairs and me and a friend, We're about 20 miles out and I was catching the most fish using a 1-1/2 oz egg sinker, swivel, a ft of 100 lb mono and a 2/0 hook. There was a light chop 2-3 ft and the 4 strangers were holding themselves rock steady to the BOAT. Half way through the day trip the Captain asked me to demonstrate how I fish. I drop my bait, a piece of fish belly and chopped squid, when the sinker hits bottom I note the elevation, crank for 6-12 inches from the bottom, length of the leader, and set the ROD to the HORIZON. That way the bait isn't being JIGGED from the CHOP, you can FEEL an actual strike and it also minimizes getting a fish time to wedge under a rock. They all caught 2-4 fish each and I wasn't scorned with my haul of 16 fish.

Experience is what's learned just after you need it the most. Ive been offshore 20 times or so. Cant tell you how many times Ive back lashed a real. Finally got the hang of it, sorta. Never have got the hang of guiding the line back onto the reel tho.... for sure, its a learned skill and it takes a lot of learning. Ive been embarassed so many times and made me feel so bad I bought my own gear so I dont screw up the charter owned rigs.

Didn't know the difference until today when i started looking into buying a couple new cod fishing reels here in nl canada. The 3 level winders i have now have started to fail alternateing back and forth and are up for replacement(canadian tire,6 years old) Think i'm gonna stick with a couple level winders for mom and dad for now(they're in their late 70's lol) Try to buy decent quality👍 I learned something new today! Great video thanks. Now do you set your drag with the lever fully engaged? Also when live bait fishing do you use half to no drag then when a fish hooks up you fully engage that lever?
@GablesOnTheGo
@GablesOnTheGo 4 года назад
Trolling, lever at just enough drag to set the hook, but light enough to let the fish run. If I'm yellowtailing, open bail let the bait fall freely, then when the fish takes it, close the bail and reel. I have Shimano baitrunners for live bait and let the fish run for a bit then come tight on them once they have it for awhile. The only time I lock the drag is AJ's or grouper on the on the bottom and you need to get their head turned out of the wreck or rocks.

How many yards of line is the least that you recommend having on a reel? I’m going on a trip next week. I have about 300 yards 80lb braid on my penn squall 30 size. Fishing for 50-100 pound tuna. Hope I get your help! Thank you 😎🤙🏼
@GablesOnTheGo
@GablesOnTheGo 2 года назад
Well, it depends on a couple of things. Your line should be plenty heavy IF you have enough of it to go light on the drag, I would prefer twice that amount of line for fast fish. If you have the Squall 30 lever drag, you'll only be able to put 13 pounds of drag on the fish, your line test will be overkill at that point and I would prefer more/lighter line. If you have the star drag reel, according to Penn you can put 30 pounds of pressure on, so you'll need stronger line, which 80lb test should be fine, and you'd be able to slow a big fish down quicker and therefore might get by with the 300 yds of 80lb. Now that's just my take on it, I hope others here with more knowledge will give you their opinion. But I will say, if you indeed get a 100 lb tuna on that rig, you better get ready for a battle and a smoked drag, tuna pull like a freight train!

Not having a line guide seems like an absolutely terrible design - Who wants to worry about spooling your line properly when you're fighting a fish?
@GablesOnTheGo
@GablesOnTheGo 3 месяца назад
There are very specific reasons why no line guide is not only an advantage, but sometimes a necessity not to have one. Not having a levelwind allows you to reel heavy terminal tackle (like swivels) up on to the spool, especially when you are fishing with a long leader....in some cases as much as 50 feet of line. That's one reason....there are many more.
@thenathanimal2909
@thenathanimal2909 3 месяца назад
Ahhh,so if you're catching VERY big fish it's an advantage. I'm just kayak fishing 1-3 miles off the coast in the pacific - the biggest fish I would catch would be a 50lb yellowfin tuna or 100lb bluefin tuna - but I mostly catch 5 - 10lb rockfish and the occasional large halibut. In my case, based off your insight, it seems like I would benefit from a levelwind. @@GablesOnTheGo
@GablesOnTheGo

I really prefer levelwind reels over conventional guideless reels just for simple ease of use. But as you know, there is a proper tool for every task and I like to have a good reel for any type fishing.

Only a googan doesnt know the difference between a levelwind reel and a freespool reel. Prob shouldnt be fishing either until they are taught or schooled on how each works. Thats pretty basic stuff there. But most of the time a mate is gonna let the line out and also hook the fish and reel it in half way then let the googan just reel in the fish with no instructions so it doesnt matter anyway!😎
