Thank you so much for posting this tutorial. Whenever I’ve been out with pros they always use manual mode but I’ve always had difficulty with that and my photos would turn out over or under exposed or my camera would not fire at all. So I’ve been using aperture mode with auto ISO but I didn’t change the minimum or maximum ISO and in low light, my pictures are dark although still sharp. But now I’ve learned this from you I’ll adjust mysettimgs. Thank you so very much for this awesome tutorial. I’ve subscribed and will be watching more tutorials.
Brilliant, at last someone has explained it in the most uncomplicated but most efficient way, thank you! Now I am going to watch your wildlife histogram for wild life. You got yourself another subscriber!
Thank you Paul for showing photographers, beginners as well as seasoned amateurs and professionals, that you don't have to use completely manual settings to be taken seriously and get great results. Use whatever settings work for you is my advice. People on you tube that push the lie that anything but total manual is not the "correct way" are doing more harm than good, in my humble opinion. Keep up the good work. Cheers from the US.
Thanks so much! Absolutely agree. I personally prefer manual as much as possible but there are situations where I just don't think it makes sense. And yes, I totally agree it's whatever works for you.. so hopefully this video helps some people out there.
I just love the way you explain each situation Paul , I have often used settings in the past without fully understanding , just hoping , but thanks to your great posts I am now in with a chance of getting some photo's I can enjoy looking at ,thank you.
That means a lot Rod, thank you. I'm one of those people.. I have to know how it works! And teaching clients, I need to know exactly.. else I can't explain it well enough!
Nice video Paul, I once was that man determined to take all shots in M and ended up with so much disappointment over the years, until 2019 when a friend said he'd been using aperture priority for his motor racing shots, I tried it for some aircraft shots and started to render better results. During lockdown I took to birds in flight during my daily exercise (no flypasts or airshows going on) and kinda got hooked. I have used shutter priority combined with auto ISO but I have never noticed that you can change the minimum shutter speed on my 90D, I'll have to check it out and start experimenting a little more. My current challenge is getting some nice kingfisher pictures. Keep the videos coming, I'm learning more and more with each and every one 👍👏👏
Thanks Paul,as ever technical issues explained so clearly and precisely. Never thought of setting minimum speed on aperture priority, but this vid explains the process so clearly. Thanks again for another great guide.
Thanks for that, Paul. I didn't realise that setting was in my 1DX. The minimum shutter speed setting I mean, when using auto ISO. I've adjusted it now. Again, thanks 👍🏻
A very informative video Paul , I always watch your videos which are spot on .. thanks for sharing your tips !! ..... AV mode saves you in many situations where light is changing constantly.
This is superb and had always struggled with AV mode till now and now I understand it better from watching your video hopefully it will give me a lot more freedom when out birding with my 5D MKIV and not having to think too much about settings that I do all the time when using manual mode
If you enjoyed this video then check out an alternative way to expose by using Shutter Priority Mode: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Ssk9c1YGgTQ.html
Thank you. Not really. All exposure is based on what the camera sees so it''s usually ok. You may need to compensate sometimes.. The biggest problems is if ISO gets too high and noisy but you can limit that.
I used to shoot manly Manual all the time. This year I have been photograhing birds in all kinds of situations and faced Manual distracted me from taking the photos I wanted. Using aperture priority you controll the ambiance. Trade off is still the balance of shutterspeed and iso of which I finally learned not to take images within the range where all settings do not fit. Thx for the video. Just found out the max shutterspeed in the camera.... Should take some time to learn all params of the camera.
Thank you. I prefer the neutral setting and then enhance it all later. I found that setting the Kelvin gives really consistent results.. works very well.
I’ve been trying this last 3 times I’ve been out . I’m sure I’m doing something wrong or my camera can’t cope with it pictures always dark . No matter how I set the camera . and advice please . My camera is Nikon d5100 . If I set camera in full auto or in manual mode pics nice and light .
Hi Paul! I used to prefer Aperture Priority at the time when my pathetic Sigma 150-500 was my main birding lens. I had to stop it down to f/10 and lower to get usable sharpness. Of course that meant my shutter speed wasn't good enough for birds in flight. I didn't go manual because the 70D did not offer exposure compensation in that mode, which was necessary for me as I used to shoot dark eagles against very bright skies. They don't even emerge till the sky is almost white in the tropical sun. Anyway, I got drawn in by the Rollers in the video thumbnail. Here's a video of very interesting behaviour by a Roller in the rain that I shot recently. Do take a look! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-C93euRPcgfQ.html
I totally understand. It is necessary to stop down to get the best sharpness on those lenses. I watched your footage - absolutely amazing! I have never seen that. Where was this shot?
