Using borax on plants can yield some amazing results. If you are seeing stunted growth tips and crisp leaves you may have a boron deficiency. This gardening in Canada video looks at how to use borax on houseplants and why the boron contained in borax is so valuable.
The boron in Borax is a micronutrient that is required in very small amounts by all plants. Some plants such as brassica crops have relatively high boron requirements and are therefore most susceptible to boron deficiency. This means using boron in the garden is equally as useful!
Boron is most available for uptake by plants in pH-neutral soils and becomes less available in acidic or alkaline soil. With potting soil, we tend to have more acidic soil and therefore low uptake of micronutrients such as boron. Keep in mind you can purchase pH-neutral potting soils such as this one here. geni.us/bOh8

Ashley is an agronomist who has had a passion for plants since she was a small child. In the long summers as a child, she would garden alongside her grandmother and it was then that she realized her love for greenery. With years of great studying, Ashley had begun her post-secondary education at the University of Saskatchewan.
At first, her second love, animals, was the career path she chose but while doing her undergrad she realized that her education would take her elsewhere. And with that, four years later she graduated from the University of Saskatchewan with a bachelor’s degree in science and a major in Soil Science.

Sea water (or sea salt) has 81 elements or "trace elements" that can be used for your plants at a dilution rate of 1 table spoon per gallon. Boron is included in sea water 👍🏻 I regularly use this for trace elements and the plants are fine.

I was concerned about the effects of borax used in my laundry water on the plant life in my area. Now I know to be mindful of how I dispose of the waste water if I use borax. I will dispose of it in different areas so that one spot does not get overloaded with the borax.

Boron is involved in calcium uptake and also transport of sugar into the sugar sinks and from the leaves and down to the roots. An easy way to test for a deficiency is take a brix reading in the morning and again in the evening and if there is no difference then u r deficient cause the plant cant move the sugars to the roots at the end of the day

I just found out that the municipal compost ive used the last 3 years has a boron content of 185 ppm. Ive used about 8 truck loads of it all over my property in that timeframe. Even have mixed it 50/50 in my raises beds. Everything grows well in it, no idea how it hasnt killed everything on my property 😂😂. Only thing i can think of is i have a very high ph about 8. So the plants may just not absorb it? What do you think?

hate dabbling in guesswork, which farmers have no time for, as they have ready access to soil and tissue tests. since i dont have access to these, i prefer to apply all micronutrients solution, when i suspect micro nutrient deficiency. i still sometimes dabble in application of single nutrient from time to time, if that doesnt work. it's come to my attention that typical donestic grade micro nutrient chelates are ligno-sulphate based, which is not that great. commercial concerns have already switched to using a better glycine form of micro chelates, which are not easy to source in domestic market. do you have views on this and have you tried glycine chelate micro nutrient foliar application?

My papaya has ringspot virus, and someone recommended me to spray boron (borax diluted). After watching your video, I'm keen to spray 1 tbsp borax + 1 gallon water over my fruits and whole papaya tree. hello! I’m new here and thank you for the very scientific approach! I’m looking for a gentle solution for controlling mushrooms in the yard, and I read somewhere else that “dry laundry detergent” can be used to control that, so I’m assuming that must be borax? What are your thoughts on that and I’m curious the chemical component that might work here. I used unseasoned mulch from my town which we get for free, to cover up an area of the yard that I am redoing-trying to snuff out an invasive plant that took hold there. And these questionable mushrooms came up in the mulch, which I would like to stomp out, for fear they might be poisonous for my pets. I don’t wanna use anything toxic in my yard, so seeking a gentle solution, that might also benefit the ph of the soil for future garden uses (grass, vegetables, perhaps) Thank you for making your videos!
