There are many ways to level out an audio track. You can automate volume or compress, but one thing that's often overlooked is using clip gain.
In this tutorial, Joe Gilder dives into a few tips that will have you using clip gain to make quick and effective adjustments to your audio.

Clip gain is awesome for a live bass track. You can level out inconsistent volume and big peaks, and not rely so much on compression. And while you're not supposed to mix with your eyes, you can kind of do that for a bass track. You can avoid clipping and free up a lot of headroom. Clip gain is fantastic just for that alone!

Yes. It’s a great way to prep for compression without asking compression to work too hard.

Thanks, Joe! I've been using the clip gain envelope for quite awhile, but usually just for fades at the end of songs. This is definitely going to expand my use of it.

Dammmnnn!!! Joe, thank you so much for reminding me of this. I had briefly used a clip gain envelope or two waaayyy back when I was first getting to know the DAW a few years ago, but then a couple of months ago when I really needed to use that function again, I was trying to work that same kind of magic using just the basic splits and gains, and thinking "Damn, I thought there was a way to do automation-like level changes on the track's pre-mixer audio. How did I used to do that?", and I racked my brain and just could not remember and was going crazy. NOW I am in the process of doing arrangement/production for a singer/songwriter and you've saved the day here, because I REALLY need to use these clip gain envelopes in this project! Thank you, thank you, thank you, kind sir!!! Edit: Hey, is there a setting somewhere to have "Gain Envelope" enabled by default upon the creation and/or import of any and all new audio events in a song?

This is the best audio editing feature in Studio One. I use it all the time and you can zoom in and get very precise. One thing that would be nice in clip gain is to be able to use the paint tool to edit single wave shapes

Yep. On my recent project I went all in with clip gain envelopes. Before that, all I knew was to use the Cut tool to separate into discrete events and raise or lower volume of each tiny event. Clip gain envelopes enabled me to adjust an entire audio event in any large or small Increment I wanted. So simple.

It's even more useful when you have to do post-production mastering and you want to take out some inter sample Peaks . Also if you use the pencil tool with quantized set to off you can free draw the gain clip and it's extremely useful

Hi Joe from @presonus, would be cool if the alternate tool (with Cmd key) would also support upper and lower half of the object, so that we would have essentially 4 tools available instead of only 3.

Regarding volume automation if you've done your automation and you say oh man it needs to come up or down use the mix tool plugin, that's what it's for you can raise or lower by db's.the entire track.

Alternatively use a VCA channel to control the gain of your guitar bus and automate the VCA channel. Your Guitar bus fader is not then 'locked in' and can be tweaked as needed..
@dmsorensen
@dmsorensen 2 месяца назад
Automation doesn't have to lock you in. You can highlight the whole track and hover over the top of the event and use the trim tool to raise or lower the overall volume, while still keeping the automation moves relative to each other. 👍

I have a feature request for the next updates of studio one, to be able to create folders and Buses for the specific folder within the mixer, and to be able to add cross fades/fade at the end of an event and event gain/clip gain but to folder events, just like how its done on individual tracks instead of having to add automation the folder, also to be able to place the mouse on any corner edges and drag the folder event left and right as we choose to shorten the folder event and the tracks with it, to act just like how its done on a individual track. I usually have to do drag on the individual track within a folder to shorten the folder event.

When you un-ticked the clip gain you seemed to imply that the changes were removed? My understanding and experience is that un-ticking the box after making changes retains those changes and just hides the display of the line on the clip. There are a number of other useful options on that menu. I like that you can change the colour and name of the clip for instance.
@OmriBenDavid
@OmriBenDavid 2 месяца назад
You're right. un-ticking is just removing the display. The 'Bypass' to the right of the tick box is bypassing the clip gain changes.

... you know, this brings me to the idea again : it might be a good thing to implement these "toggle" functions (in other softwares the logical key is usually "TAB"), but it can be anything, besides, we do not want it to move "toggle" only in 1 direction, but in both directions, right? So every group of functions we have in Studio One should have the possibility to be "toggled", so once you are in a certain group of functions, you can "toggle" to the rest, right or left direction without the need of going up to the menu, etc. But I mean really to switch to the "next" function, not just to have this "temporary" cursor function thing. Correct me if I'm wrong or am missing something ...

As helpful as these videos are - and they ARE helpful - I generally find myself doing the opposite of the methods shown. My genré is classical-adjacent and a flat-top wave form sounds...terrible. I hate limiters, I can hear it come on. My music needs quiet parts, and if my audience of what? two hundred? is listening in their cars or in mono, they shouldn't be. don't stop what you're doing though! this is all very useful and I appreciate it.
