I was wondering if I should add coconut coir to my seed starting mix, and I will. I love how my house plants have taken to it. I like the lava rocks in my peace lily too its definitely a game changer as I have been using coir in my house plants for a year now and they are doing great!

Imma started my seedlings with Coconut coir and beautiful results. I’m now going to move them to 3 inch pots, to let them grow some more and get ready to transplant them at the end of March into the ground. Do you think I could use just coconut coir with worm castings, in the 3 inch pots?

You could, but I would start a fertilizer habit as well at this time, since coco coir doesn't have any nutrients. Maybe a garden fertilizer at 1/4 strength would probably be okay. We also don't want to cause chemical burn...

How do you feel about coir being used for succulents? I bought some Bonsai Jack succulent mix but found out it doesn't hold any moisture so I mixed it with 2 parts bonsai jack to 1 part worm castings and 1 part coco coir thinking the absorbancy of the coir would help off set the airy-ness of the gritty mix.

That sounds like a good mix as long as your succulents are getting good light. You mainly get into trouble when they are in low light, and then your soil is holding too much water. But with enough light coco coir would be great!

You can store it in a container & let it dry until you need it again. Then just crumble it in with more potting mix. I wouldn’t add more water when mixing it unless it’s hard to break up.

Soft, spongy (not dense) soil is what I am looking for. Will coconut coir make my seed starting mix softer to the touch. ...All soil amendments that I tried so far end up compacting the starting mix.

Yes, coconut coir will be spongy. 😊

Could I use this for orchids instead of wood bark?
@thegirlwithashovel
@thegirlwithashovel 2 месяца назад
I wouldn't. You could use this as a base material, but the wood bark is mainly to add lots of aeration to the soil. Coco coir holds on to moisture, so it wouldn't work as an aeration element to the soil. Sorry.

Coconut Coir is an Un Ending resource, It helps Major and small red world farmers get money for waste that they could not use. About 20 yrs ago, someone came up the the idea to recapture the waste. Small farmers living didn't allow them to purchase the machines to break the husks down. This sucked up their land and created rat and mosquito infestations making life even harder. Eventually as marketing and shipping the Coir became successful, Companies expanded collection from the small farmers and eventually paying small payments. Environmentally Using Peat Moss should be considered the same as Mining the Coral Reef. Period ! Peat Moss Companies are using Rhetoric,Lobbing ,and Green Washing. The Peat Bogs take millions of years, and once they are gone that is it. Our modern day land use doesn't really allow for them to regenerate, and don't forget that the climate was very different 1,000s of years ago. Using peat should be considered the same as mining the coral reefs.....Environmentally Using Peat Moss should be considered the same as Mining the Coral Reef. Period ! I think people are just afraid of changing to coco coir because it's unfamiliar to them l. Let's keep up the great work of helping people learn how to use this amazing sustainable material. 😊
