Another good way to think of such battles is that there are now 2 front lines for each army which means they have 4 flanks that can be used by cav that is why its so important. I would say in general this is mostly an anti noob tactic because if your opponent is very good splitting up will put you more in a disadvantage.

The split army is somewhat a similar style to the false gap strategy used by Alexander the great, engaging both flanks, luring the enemy to engage the centre which seems in reserve position, then disengaging cav from the flank engagement to hit the rear of the engaged enemy centre

@@FightMeTotalWarMy guess is: no matter what kind of formation you play, AI will typically attack frontally with infantry and flank you with cavalry, which is so easy to counter...
