You guys know I'm a fan of weathering and adding something other than just paint on to my models. I think it adds a lot more to tell a story of what the model has been through and it's a great way to finish the model off. I've been meaning to try the Dirty Down effects range for a while and now then I was very kindly sent some by Eire Hobbies to try out...so here we are! While this video is not sponsored by Eire Hobbies I highly recommend checking them out if you're in Ireland-next day delivery is a godsend! I messed around with the rust and learned as I went, and decided to make a video on each of the range, Rust, Verdigris, and Moss! So stay tuned and learn how to add something special to your models, in a very quick and easy way-perfect for my channel!

If you throw a patch or two of typhus corrosion underneath for some interesting texture prior to the rust you can get some amazing effects too.

it might be good to know that Dirty Down has a history of making products that weather and dirty down props and costumes, and such for the movie and theater industry. The rust, moss, and verdigris products are all just downsized pots of what they use when making props and such, it is not really designed the same way as many other products made specifically for the miniature painting hobby. So this is a product that you need to experiment a fair bit with to learn how it behaves and what effects you can achieve. That's the price you pay for using the same products they use in movies and in theaters :)

I really like this product; started using on all my Guard motor pool to a real nice result. The metal mixing ball is a nice touch, as you said it's thick goop. Doing a couple passes worked for me, and I also found when i did the second run with a bit of water loaded in my brush i liked all the variance and gradients that I got. Didn't use a hair dryer, my painting lights were hot enough. Final touches I did do a reductive rub over with a cotton tshirt when it was half dry, and then a light dry brush of steel/aluminum. It does take a while to finally dry, it was hours later when I put "snow" on the model, the rust leached through a bit.

Great video - I went through a similar journey as you with the Rust and Verdigris paints. I still haven't worked out how to get moss to pop as vibrantly as I've seen others achieve, so looking forwards to you testing it. I've also found that just spraying/splashing water onto models (particularly terrain) after a thin rust/Verdigris later, and allowing to pool and dry will give pretty great, random result too. Ambient humidity can also reactive the paint. Not to the degree it'll streak, but after a particularly humid day here, I noticed some of mine turned even more orange, which looked fine, but if you do reach a point you're happy with, sealing with varnish is probably a requirement. I'm sure there's some effect from the varnish itself too, but I've been lucky to not had a big effect.

I wonder if you applied it wrong so you could walk people through the process and also show how you can use water to recover from overuse - either way you did find another cool way to use this :) Most people I've seen apply a bit on the most weathered but not all parts, let it dry a bit and then use water on a brush to spread it further, add more colour variety and cover the less corroded areas.

@@MediocreHobbies I tried it out - I used it on some undead models. It worked really well for the large areas of armor that were plate or flat , but on weapons it had mixed effects. Glad I am not alone in not getting the magic results on first use. I was getting totally disheartened seeing everyone else getting those stunning effects seemingly on first use all over RU-vid and not being able to find any evidence at all of anyone getting the same sludgy brown mess I was getting. In the end I found the closes I could get to the results I was seeing online was if I kept my brush fairly wet, far more than if I was using regular paint, got me useable but inconsistent results. But I have never been completely happy with this stuff.

I painted it directly onto my bloodcrushers (verdigris) and ive left it for 2 weeks, coming back to it, i tried putting a small touch of citadel virdigris and its washed the paint off completely. Hiya, thanks for showing what doesn't work with this stuff, as well as what does. Did you find a way to seal the rust afterwards without ruining the effect? As good as a Death Guard force with this effect would look, it would wear off with handling because of the water solubility. Spray can varnish deadens the effect significantly too. Any thoughts on ways around that?

And I guess we have different ideas on expensive. Just saying :-)
@markhickson9087
@markhickson9087 Год назад
@Mediocre Hobbies thanks for the reply. I said expensive because compared to, say, citadel paints (which I feel are expensive), dirty down rust is twice as expensive per ml in the uk and then there is the p&p on top because not many shops stock it. I did watch the whole video, and in general, I love your videos and painting style. However, with this video, I was less impressed. I was. It felt like your first attempt you hadn't read the instructions nor watched any videos of others. You appeared to just smear on a thick brown mess over everything and were surprised when it looked like you had thrown a bucket of gravy at the piece. I've been using it for a while, and while I liked your final piece, I feel you could have got there from the beginning AND then tried to perfect the approach. Maybe this video wasn't aimed at me? I use a mixture of approaches from about a year ago, Artis Opus and a few others (though I now can't find the video on watering it - could have been squidmar. Firstly I use a texture paint where I want the thickest rust, fine chalky dust in some brown paint, then hairdryer, then dirty down where I want the rust(crevices, under rivets, corners and streaks etc), finally stipple with DD rust where I want darker rust and reactivate with a damp brush where I want orange and lighter rust. I dry with a hairdryer again. Finally, a coat of matt varnish. It works for me and uses far less paint and goes where I put it mostly. There are other ideas like using clingfilm to give a random surface rust pattern, etc, that are good ideas. Keep up the great work👍.
