I wish EVERYONE could watch this video! Some people can’t believe I would “put such a thing on my dog”. And I just keep telling them it’s an amazing communication tool! Now I can have them watch this so they understand!! Your videos, podcast and everything have helped me so much in our dogs training journey...THANK YOU! We always get the “wow, she’s only 9 months?!” comment...I just smile and think “you’re dog could be this good too if you took the time and watched Tom Davis!”

You're the best trainer on RU-vid hands down!! Thanks so much for such great help. I just bought a Dr.Trainer Dog Training Collar for my male Rhodesian Ridgeback named Wendell. This E collar has auto retractable and will not cause irritation to my dog's neck. Also I can record my voice to the system, I can use my voice recording to train my dog, say goodbye to the traditional beep sound for good. So far it seems really effective.

I agree with you on the need for a collar at points. ITs same with a kid, they need discipline some times and praise sometimes and we do it cause we love them. I was just wondering how you wean them off the collar so it is not a permanent mainstay or does that just never happen. I know with my first collar with was a kid my dog was completelty different on his ecollar compared to just regular commands. I was also at a place that used ecollars and they used it inapropriately to the point my dog started to twitch and ignore the trainer even because he was overwelmed and she did not define what she wanted from him in my opinion. Also from every thing I seen these corrective based methods are much better at unwanted behaviors rather than initiate obedience. Some people dont train the dog from the day they are born and bad habits need to be broken. If you have time to do with purely treats thats great but every aggression video I have ever watched has correction in whether it is from ian dunbar , patricia mcconnel or karen pryor.

So much misleading information out there. I've had two separate trainers tell me I was ruining my relationship with my dog, because I used a prong and e-collar on my high-drive GSD 🤨 I found a balanced trainer that was able to help me get it right and understood my needs. My relationship with my dog flourished....😃

The way I’ve been told to use it is for example.. we are training our dog to loose leash walk and not be so reactive with other dogs.. so when we are out walking he’ll bark and I was told to yank on his leash saying “leave it” and at same time push the e collar.. and if he isn’t responding or if it’s more stimulation (more barking and reaction ) turn up the e collar and do the same thing

Great vid! Thanks for sharing your knowledge. I’ve been doing R+ for years wit good results however it doesn’t work in the heightened situations like....the neighborhood cat. How do I train with the ecollar in that heightened state? Do I introduce it in a calm/less stimulating setting first and progressively build up response before he sees the cat? Thanks for all you do! Is there a point in a dogs life where you don’t use the e collar anymore because it’s hard wired into his/her head ? Or is it a tool that should be worn their whole life when off leash ? And should I keep it on the dog while at home 24/7 whilst training ? Thank you great vid !!
@remedy6424

Behind The Glass I think that they have to continue to wear it as even the most well behaved dogs will have there off days. I think you just have it on when they are outside. I have never used an e-collar so I’m just assuming but I could be wrong
@mariathielen7581
@mariathielen7581 4 года назад
Behind The Glass I am also wondering the same thing, specifically when we should leave the collar on the dog and when we should have it off. I think it would be helpful to have on even in the house to help with barking, etc. But I’m not sure. I thought he had a video on this but I can’t find it. 🤔

Great video. So educational for everyone whether for or against the communication tool. So are ecollars a permanent tool that should be used for ever? Or does it get weaned out like a prong collar or the use of treats?
@chevy-is-a-good-boy
@chevy-is-a-good-boy 5 лет назад
Once your dog has the appropriate behavior nailed, it's no longer required. But I personally still use it whenever my dog is off-leash. His recall is bullet proof, but I'd prefer the e-collar be there as a back-up, just in case something unexpected comes up. At the end of the day no matter the dog's training, it's still an animal that can make poor judgement calls, and get itself hurt.

I have a question! I had been leash training my dog using just the nylon slip collar and your training tips and techniques. He was doing really well for a while and I almost had him to where I could just have the leash on his collar. Then my dad started taking him on walks, abandoning these techniques, and now I feel like my dog is desensitized to the slip collar and I am back to where I started. Is it possible to go back to using it the right way to retrain him myself? Or do I need to start using the prong collar and this time make sure that everyone who walks him knows the method I had been using? Please let me know! I am fine with using a prong collar, but I am afraid that if the same thing happens with that tool then I will be out of luck.

What do you mean by “you’re going to get redirected on it” by using a prong collar on an aggressive dog? Training groups like LARPBO require a prong collar to be in the training groups…

@Audra94braun

I just want to clarify when exactly we are seeing stimulation applied during this training? It has to be in that split second after command when the dog isn’t moving right? Otherwise it is too late? How do you gauge that?
@tomdavisofficial
@tomdavisofficial 6 лет назад
Audra Braun I like to associate the command with the e collar simultaneously.
@Audra94braun
@Audra94braun 6 лет назад
so the stimulation is not a punishment then, what is the it exactly saying to the dog? I am so curious to learn since my previous trainer basically tried the 'bad dog gets stimulation till he stops being bad' and it didn't have any last effect on my dog and now I think I know why!
@tomdavisofficial
@tomdavisofficial 6 лет назад
Audra Braun great question, no the stimulation should never be introduced as a correction. This would really freak a dog out, this level should be a low conditions level. Usually between 2-8, this level we as humans can’t really feel. This is a association level, never to be used as a correction or scare the dog in anyway. This is the difference between proper ecollar training and improper in my opinion. Using the ecollar to simply associate your voice with the low stimulation then can be transferred from over a mile away!
@Audra94braun
@Audra94braun 6 лет назад
Upstate Canine Academy so glad to hear this! My gut feeling was always ‘if this is the right way to use the tool my dog should be learning’ but the training never stuck. The way you use the ecollar basically makes the dog believe you have super powers!

Audra Braun kind of! We’ve advanced so much with technology why shouldn’t our dogs? I feel bad for anyone not taking advantage of the tool.

What you've described about the process of positive reinforcement is incomplete and inaccurate. No wonder it sounds stupid, invalid, and not effective. What you are describing is bribing your dog with food, which is not involved in positive reinforcement whatsoever. It's an easy argument for you when you misconstrue the method of something you're opposed to.

I Understand what you're saying. Alot of people are using E-collars wrong, I'm against it tho just because of that. I disagree with you however on how pointless you make it sound if the dog won't come if you don't have treats. First off your not the owner, you're obviously not so interesting for the dog while the owners are (hence the dog want to be there). Will try to make this short but all you have to do is practising recall so many times that the dog associate the calling with a positive feeling. That's what dogs do, associate things with feelings and energy. I always played with my dog when we're outside. Always (she wants to play more than having treats. Mostly because I trained her that way). Now, even tho I don't bring anything when we're going out. She will rather focus on me than other dogs etc because I'm more fun. She associate her doing good with alot of positivity for her. After 3 years, I still complement and play with her after a successful recall which I do 20-30 times each walk. Practise makes perfect. I get it, E-collars are great at breaking the dogs concentration at whatever their focused at. I just know that you can use other methods such as putting a treat infront of their nose to redirect the dogs focuse at your face. Doing it with some sort of toy works aswell. If you trained a dog properly from the beginning, the dog respect you as a leader and you both has a great relationship. Things like this won't be a problem. I'm simply against E-collars because I know how many people there will always be who misuse them. Hence why they're illegal in many countries. Same with crating, it's illegal because people misuse it and lock the door shut which just gives the dog misery.

So you removed your comment where you were "Laughing out loud" and claiming I did not Watch the video? People need to stop take a honest discussion so damn personal.. I'm aware that you described people using different tools different. I Think I stated myself pretty clear even tho it was night time and from my phone. Just stated why I'm against it, because there is so much abuse within this type of collar, obviously several countries feel the same way. Even tho there is a few people who use it right, they felt there is more harm than good. I also stated that there is other ways to train a dog that specific command (any command realy), which obviously several countries agree with. Nothing is as hopeless as you made it look like. Yea I might misunderstood you, that is just my translation of what you said. "Now what?". If I'm wrong then I would like to hear it and get a reason why. I would like to get a valid arguement back to be honest. This is my experience, but I'm willing to learn new things.
@InsideTheDogWorld
@InsideTheDogWorld 6 лет назад
Steve Cooper well ofcourse, but obviously not in the same way. Is that your only arguement? That two wrongs make it right?
@tomdavisofficial
@tomdavisofficial 6 лет назад
You're not wrong we can go back an forth all day about this and that, I can simply rebuttal and say well several other countries believe in many things we Americas feel as immoral and un humane as well. I can list several things but Im not going to because that besides the point. There are many other ways to get recall, this is a filmed breakdown of ONE topic of how to use the ecollar properly and what it can do. Many people regardless of how many informative tutorials I put out will still go out to a store buy a e-collar and use it improperly rather you or I like it. So id love for those people to have a LITTLE education moving forward for those people. Or we can turn a blind eye and ignore the miss use of equipment and stay silent and not help the dog owners going out trying things on their own. My way certainly isn't the only way by any means, using the e-collar for me has saved many many dogs lives and it's impacted the lives of many dog owners. That's 100% correct with many video and written testaments to prove this. So for anyone to hop on RU-vid and say this is wrong or incorrect is simply stating their personal opinion on the subject. I love dogs just as much as anyone commenting on this video and I promise you I use equipment safely and effectivly. This is just a video for the thousands of people who LOVE and use equipment everyday, this is some advice to do things properly. If you don't agree with it that's totally fine, thats your right. There's just no way out of all the dog trainers out there mis using tools you can put down and argue with some of us preaching about using them correctly. That would tell me you're not really in it for the dog you're here to simply state your one sided opinion on how YOU feel. Yes theres evidence of ecollars making dogs nervous and shut down, theres also evidence of using treats leading directly to obesity. Theres also evidence of flat collars and harness causing long term effects on joints and nerves? Then we think, ya due to a idiot wearing a wrong size harness or too tight of a flat collar. So my point is, theres science and evidence that points to wrong usage in every realm of dog tools. I would think someone like yourself who may not agree with these such tools would at least respect me for education proper and humane usage of these tools.

That dog was tóo smart: he didn't come after calling him (at 5, 6 minutes) because he knew this trainer has something that was tricky and hurted him in the neck.....in my opinion. He was afraid of him after using that collar. After that the trainer explained that it was because he had no cookies, but i doubt it.
