This tutorial goes over how to use envelope distort within Adobe Illustrator to create extremely simple yet powerful effects on type! The end results only create a few seconds to create, and allow you to change and edit your type even after you've applied the effect.
A huge time saver once you get used to it, and should you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask in the comments! =)

I went here looking for an explanation to convert my text to an object from the envelop warp/distort and not only was able to figure out how to do what I was wanting to do I leaned something about Illustrator I have never known about! Excellent! Great video.

Wow. This is insane. I've been using Illy for 20 years or so, and probably never used this tool/feature. I found this video when looking for a plug-in to do exactly this. Very cool to find out, for once, that i don't need to shell out more money to do something. That's the amazing thing about Photoshop and Illustrator-you can use them for two decades, within your own little 'bubble' of needs, and then discover it has other capabilities and different ways of doing things. great tutorial. I just wanted to share that if you select the two anchor points in the middle of the rectangular path and chose the scale tool, you can bring them in and skip some steps. I don't know if this works the same but I just learned it so I thought I would share

This was EXACTLY what I needed. THANKS! Suggestion with making that initial (bowtie) shape. 1 Draw rectangle, 2 snap guide line in center of rectangle, 3 marquee both rectangle and guide and click align center , 4 click pathfinder divide, 5 click pathfinder Unite, 6 scale rectangle center points in. Yeah, I know there are a ton of ways, just seemed like a lot to get that shape. Thanks again though.

I was able to do this, but instead of deleting the bottom portion, I created another anchor point, and dragged it to where I wanted it. Then I followed the rest of the steps, and it worked out. Thanks!!!

it never works for me! it always give me a message ( this requires a section of multiple objects. the top object must be single path or mesh, or a symbol containing a single path or mesh) so i tried to combine the shape but still did not work! :(

Dude, that was so easy and you were totally easy to understand. All I am trying to do is apply more Arc to my type but once I finished typing the first time the envelope icon on the top menu bar wont come back, Im totally stumped how to add a few more degrees of arc to my project

Kerry Padget I think you have to totally undo your envelope on the type / object before you try to apply a new one.

Great tutorial! Thanks. I'm having some trouble, though. My shape is a rectangle with a simple upward arch on the bottom side. It reshapes the word with the upward arch on the bottom ok, but it also distorts the sides of the letters on each end of the word. Could it be the "Envelope Options" settings? What do each of the envelope options settings mean, and what should they be for the simple task described above?
