How to use Feathered Light | Take and Make Great Photography with Gavin Hoey

Feathering a light is so much more than simply turning it away from your subject. In this video photographer, Gavin Hoey takes you through why feathering light is an essential studio lighting skill and how he uses it to control light in his small home studio.
Although the most common way to feather a light is to move it horizontally, Gavin also shows you how vertical feathering can open up more lighting options. He also bursts a popular portrait myth that feathering a light will give a softer light.

one aspect of feathering a softbox away to the front of a subject is to achieve a more even light distribution from one side to the other side of a subject, f.e. a face or a group of poeple. the idea is based on the relative size of the lightsource and the inverse square law. the side of the subject closer to the light is „seeing“ less of the light while the other side further away from the light sees more which compensates for the loss of light which is caused by the inverse square law. that way you can get a directional light (as opposed to frontal lighting) but with a more even light distribution compared to aiming the light directly at your subject from one side.

So do you mean if you put a light to one side of a group facing across (parallel to the line of the group) in front of them, then that would achieve what you describe? Interesting!

I love Felix Kunze’s work and much of his teaching, but he always talks about soft feathered light which drives me nuts. I have tested it and got the same results as your results and another blog I read. What feathering does do well is lighten shadows if using a reflector and I think that is where the confusion arises in that lest contrasty shadows seem more soft but are just more flat.
@jpdj2715
@jpdj2715 4 года назад
To international viewers, audience, could you explain the word "feathered"? I can use a dictionary, several even, online and in paper, but there is no conclusive translation AFAIAC. Seems like "to feather" may be used for "to put at an angle". In my language, we would not reference the slanted light modifier, but the resulting light: "grazing light" (according to dictionaries) in English. We compare it with the softest stroking you could do with the hand. Almost like "caressing light" - irrespective of source, it is about the effect: soft shadow transitions. There is another application of the angled modifier. If you need to light a group with directional light from one side as if there was a window, you can use the 90 degree angle to defeat in part the inverse square law that would normally apply with a full on source. The person nearest the reflector sees the white of the modifier the narrowest, meaning less light falls on the person nearest the reflector than on the next, farther away. You use this principle too in these portraits of one person.

Great way to bring the truth about feathered light. I knew it largely controls where the light goes but never considered that it could actually make the shadow transitions “harder” by reducing the relative size of the modifier to the subject. Gavin, you’ve done it again!

Excellent instruction. Thank you Gavin. Thank you Adorama. Gavin, were you re-metering each time you moved the box to different feathering positions? TTL? I guess I'm asking if the strobe power changed in different feathering positions
@GavinHoey

Spot on Dan. If you move the light you'll change the exposure on your subject. I used a flash meter to maintain a constant exposure on Jade but to avoid this video becoming slowed down with constant re-metering I edited those bits out.

Thanks Randy. When you think about it feathered light must be harder light and yet feathered light = soft light is repeated time and again... A bit like long lens compress detail 🤐
@Parms
@Parms 4 года назад
I was surprised by this too. The edge of the light is softer though so if that hit the model’s face, wouldn’t that give her softer shadows on her face?
@gregorylagrange
@gregorylagrange 4 года назад
If you start out aiming the soft box directly at the model and the gradually turn it so that the axis moves across her face, then you will get a gradual fall off of the light across the image and some softening of the shadows because of the light from the part of the soft box away from the model reaching more of the far side of the frame. But if you turn the light so that it makes an obtuse angle to the background like in this video, then you will get harsher shadows from being lit with a small diffusion area.

I totally agree that it doesn't make the light softer to feather. But I think that the benefits of feathering the softbox comes when you have white walls or a v-flat on the opposite side of the light. The reflection fills in the shadows and you get this very diffuse light from the softbox. Cheers! Always fun to watch and be inspired!
@GavinHoey
@GavinHoey 4 года назад
I'm pretty use you'd get defused reflected light feathered or not. Either way feathering is a handy technique to master.
@shifteleven
@shifteleven 4 года назад
@@GavinHoey you def get diffused light light - I perhaps misspoke. When I said "very diffuse light" I was speaking of that gradual transition in the edge of the softbox - which as noted in the video has less of a hotspot. I was not speaking of the reflected light. And you're very right about feathering being a handy technique. I can see I typed too quickly above that my comment sounded like feather was only good with a bounce. That was a mistake. I was just bringing up a point regarding the perceived "softness" comes from the bounce into a v-flat to fill in the shadows - effectively reducing the contrast and making it look softer even though the shadows are still harder than pointing the softbox straight on.

@GavinHoey
@GavinHoey 4 года назад
Hi Matt. I'm not sure it would be easier to aim with a grid but I am sure the effect of feathering is much more sudden and dramatic with a grid. I touch on this in my softbox + grid video ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-AUf6rdY9cgQ.html

I always think about it as a soft box having two falloffs: ISL distance falloff, and angle falloff. Feathering mainly uses the second one.
@JohnMacLeanPhotography
@JohnMacLeanPhotography 3 года назад
Great examples, but 8:20 feathering a BD isn’t recommended because the deflector won’t be covering the flash tube and the direct hit will spill out. Of course if you remove the deflector though it’s fine.

Just a question. When the light was direct you did measure it with light meter and not again after it. When you feather the light do you do a measurement again seeing that less light wil reach the subject for correct exposure.

Glad someone cleared this up. I've heard that feathering the light makes it softer from many prominent and very skilled photographers on RU-vid, but it never made sense to me - relative size is the only thing that matters in how soft the light is. I'm surprised so many people believe that myth.

I have been wanting to learn more about feathering light and this lesson was extremely useful. Than you. Question (not a challenge), at 4:24 we see the shadow cast on the wall is harsher, but the shadows on her face are much softer, practically gone. So what to make of this? This feathering does not seem to make the models face have harsher shadows, just the opposite. But the wall, yes more shadow.

If you are doing portraits or head and shoulders, go to the beauty supply shop and get a wig styling head. They are usually made of molded styrofoam and are cheap. Get a mount for it so you can attach it to a light stand or tripod and not on a table. You can learn a lot from having a consistent model that shows shadows clearly. If you have a small room there will be a lot of reflected light but inverse square law fall off can be high if shooting stopped down so with strobes turned off, the image is black, as you starting point. The wig styling head does not have to have a wig to learn a lot but picking up a long straight wig, and maybe a short "hair" wig to fine-tune your set up. In a small room controlling shadows is the biggest problem that this sort of practice will be invaluable in mastering. It really is easier in a large high ceiling studio so mastering it in a small room will translate well to quickly adapting to any studio

Gavin, thanks for the video! When comparing the hardness of feathered light when you show the two images side by side, I noticed that the feathered light situation is much more less specular on the face which I find more pleasing. On the other hand the lighting in that image is flatter as the light seems to be coming more from the front. Is feathered light indeed less specular or is it because the incident angle is different. Since the soft box is being rotated around an off center axis the effective location of where the light comes from changes at the same time as the feathering.
@moisesgomez1767
@moisesgomez1767 4 года назад
Hello, I don't see it or maybe I dont understand your point. This might be because on a darker or black background you might see the light on the model different but it is still the same light. Ideally the light inside the softbox should be distributed evenly but this varies from brand to brand and in this case the more external parts of the softbox get less light and then when feathered your loose light but being more softer or flat or specular mmm I think you need to understand this terms.
