Not sure what motivated you to create this tutorial, but I thank you from the bottom of my heart. I was so close to just deleting the program but then I found this. I feel like an expert now. haha. Thank you.
holy shit I'm like 5 minutes in but this is so much useful information I NEVER could have figured out on my own or just by reading manuals. like, really, thank you so much!
Greatest tutorial covering any subject ever ! Thank you so much for your no bullshit style . Having spent a great deal of time deciphering the editing of both audio and video , a closer look at layer manipulation is my last agony concerning learning curves , and you make it ever so much less painful . Thanks , Brutha ! - Subbed
Thank you so much for this video! It's informative but no so overbearing that you lose interest halfway through like some videos. I opened up GIMP and had NO IDEA how it worked. Your video has helped a lot so, once again, thanks! :D
So far I'm getting a lot out of the tutorial. I'm a very new user and have never used a program like this before. It's taking me a bit of time to actually get everything and make what I'm doing look just like what you did but the instructions are clear and easy to follow.
Wow. You actually added a script. I laughed when the guy asked for one, because someone else mentioned just slowing the video down. Then I clicked the description, and BAM! Wall of Script. Nice attention to your viewers man, Kudos!
Wow! Oh brother... You really studied GIMP very well. So far I think you are the only one on RU-vid that had gone so in depth. What I also enjoyed with your teaching is, unlike other RU-vidrs, you don't just show how to get in a particular setting but you also showed me how to get back out. This is very useful for a newbie like myself. Thank you so much for taking the time to share with me and the wider community online.
This video was FANTASTIC, I now understand everything there is to know about the basics of Gimp. This tutorial was a lot better than the old one and I personally think you were talking at a pace that was understandable (you didn't talk to fast or to slow). I am really excited to watch the next two to become the Gimp master.
thank you for showing me how to open up display tabs on the beginning of your tutorial, most every other instructor goes straight to something else,my screen now looks like the one they are using, cheers mate, nice tutorial.
This tutorial REALLY helped me get through an important project for a college class! Videos like this are a true charity in the battle for net neutrality and freedom of information. Keep fighting the good fight!
Coming from Photoshop, I loved how you went quickly through everything, since it takes long time to figure it all out by myself. Gimp names things a little differently and icons are different, etc. Thanks!
Excellent! VERY comprehensive. I replayed multiple sections because you talk very quickly. However, this is not a problem and I appreciate how much information you provided. I'm looking forward to viewing the next videos, which I am doing right now. Thank you!
Galactic oh my gosh your previous video on gimp was soooo much more confusing but has way more views. YOU NEED TO MAKE IT MORE CLEAR THIS VIDEO IS THE BETTER ONE TO WATCH!
Wow, thank you so much for putting the time and effort into making this wonderful video to help guide me on my journey to become and expert on GIMP. I have always wanted to create art in some way, shape, or form that is intuitive, and also let me express myself the best that I could. This video was really inspirational to me and I thank you for that. Let us go forth and create art!
Great video, fast paced and informative. Just pause when it gets complicated and work it out using the help files if necessary. Learning is a two way process, you have to work at it.
I'm going dying for the next tutorials. I want to make a logo and would like to see how you approach graphic design using GIMP. Keep up the good work man.
Excellent tutorial!!! Thanks helped me out... though of course I had to pause here and there coz you were going sooo FAST! But then again that's the beauty of videos as we can pace ourselves according to our levels of expertise. Thanks again for sharing! :)
Excellent tutorial; no BS at the beginning is important - just let the viewer know that they are in the right place. Very clear and concise and makes the viewer realise that GIMP is not complicated - it is complex - just a matter of practice. Well done and thanks for a great tutorial.
This is so helpful for me, because I only wanted to crop the image according to a free-style shape and make it black and white. You also explained the other functions really well. Though, sometime I had to rewind a little to catch it 'cos you spoke quite fast. Thanks a lot for the informative video!
The *BEST* Tutorial on GIMP I've ever seen! [and the only one but still..] I've been _avoiding_ GIMP for years and years and years now and sticking with more quick-to-use programs (like Paint.NET, which I use constantly) . Now, I feel like I can actually use it... finally. The running time of the video and the length of my download time for the latest GIMP were similar (my downloading speed this time of night is laggy thanks to all the thousands of local Netflix watchers :-| ) - anyway. I wanted something free and compatible with my new Wacom and GIMP will serve. Thank you for the detailed .... everything that you provided. The speed was perfect, your voice clear and you were entirely genuine without hyperbole. Nicely done and highly recommend this review to anybody who wants to learn GIMP in 25 minutes.
I agree, i had Gimp uninstalled because i did not know how to use it, even after looking up tutorials on youtube. But after watching this video i have Gimp re-installed knowing what i'm doing. Great Vid!
I'm with ya Ken. Using Linux and Gimp came with it. Couldn't figure it out so I had to keep going back to windows so I could use photoshop. This def helps. Now if I can find a video on how to use Kdenlive.
Punxsyjumper to fast for people who don't know how to use a computer in the first place i had to pause and rewind just to learn the layers part youtube should have slower tutorials good enough for seniors or older people and that goes for all applications on all computer operating systems i installed photoshop before and didn't know how to use it however i'm glad that someone has the balls to talk in a tutorial rather then just typing text and me having to pause and read.. iv'e always wondered why people don't use their real pics or voices on youtube tutorials do they have something to hide or something
Joey Reichard I agree- tutorial is too fast for me. I know computers but yep, after spending nearly an hour just in his first few minutes of the tool box, I am giving up. Gonna play around with it myself and if it don't make sense, I'll get rid of it. Just want some program to get rid of grainy fuzzies in my pictures.
Looking for the tutorial for using GIMP as a photo editor. It was mentioned at the 44sec mark of this video. This tutorial is one of the best out there.
Awesome tutorial. I want to use GIMP for making Stained Glass patterns. This is perfect. I will share your tutorial with others in our group who want to learn how to use it. Thanks!
Love it, your narrative is fast but i like it cuz there's more info in less time. If i need i can always go back and check it again. Thanks was fantastic.
You have been the best instructor I have found yet and subscribed.Thank you so very much for helping so many people ,like me.NOT give up because Gimp looks very complex .I am sure in time I will become used to it,as I did paint shop pro 9 .:>)
I"m getting up in the years and it is more challenging nowadays to keep up with all the new toys and technologies that come along. I've been a "techie" since the mid 80s and have seen a lot of progress in the past 30 years. It has been hard to keep up with all of the new rollouts, upgrades, advancements, and going mobile. I have a marketing business and work with graphics a lot. My son told me about GIMP, so I downloaded it. But it was too complex for me to grasp, so I stuck with my trusty old Paint Shop Pro that I've had for almost 20 years. As much as I longed to use GIMP, I gave up trying to figure it out. Then I finally upgraded to WIndows 8 and my old Paint Shop Pro isn't compatible. So now I'm forced to learn GIMP or another program that will be just as complex. After watching just the first five minutes of this video, I already understand more about GIMP than I have been able to comprehend in the YEARS I've spent looking for a way to learn the program that I can understand. Thank you, sir, for making this possible. I am too busy right this minute to watch and enjoy the rest of it, but have added it to a new folder in my favorites. I am looking forward to seeing the rest of this video and anything else you have to offer. And, from the other commenters I've seen, I'm not alone in my excitement. Keep up the good work, and THANKS!
GIMP, despite its flaws, is a more powerful tool than many of the other free photo-editing apps. It might not be the simplest tool to use but you can do a lot with it.
I normally don't comment youtube videos but ... this video is just awesome, i have to comment! You did a great job. A bit fast sometimes but we have a pause-button ;) pls continue with your work!
Wow this is so helpful! Yes, it was fast-paced, but that's exactly why I loved it! I slowed the speed on sections I needed to take careful notes on, and was able to quickly breeze through review of stuff I'd already figured out on my own. GREAT video! Thanks!
I've bought GIMP books and learned from them. I've watched other videos and learned from them. I've played around with GIMP and even learned a tad from that. But this really packs it in! It IS fast but there's stuff here I didn't get ANYWHERE else, and I'd rather have to play it multiple times than not have this info at all!(BTW, only one thing I wish he would do---please say "et cetera" instead of "ECK cetera.")
For those that think he goes to fast (like me!) you can slow him down by clicking the "settings" gear in the lower RH corner, clicking "speed" and change to .75. Helps a lot.
I watched your entire video and I listened. I have to agree with everyone. I agree it will take many years to learn everything there is, but you NEED to SLOWWW DOWN! It was like watching and listening to someone who just drank 3 Mountain Dews. I'll go back to get some basic stuff, but remember when you teach, the rest of us are trying to keep up.
I have tried to get my head around this but feel I am from outer space when I follow tutorials on RU-vid.....that is until yours. Thank you for a clear tutorial.
I have a computer background and yet I felt exactly as what you wrote here. But after a few weeks you start to see things fall together. Not giving up IS the key!
Thanks Galactic. Good job. Good voice. Excellent content and sequence of content offering. EXCEPT...Way too fast for a senior guy. Can't take notes or re-watch fast enough. Great help would be a script of your presentation. I will keep trying.
Jerry, He has added a limited script, but most RU-vid videos have a transcript. This one does. Click the three dots (menu) and select show transcript. But if you copy all of the transcript to and program that allow you to search for text you can then find exactly where in the video he said somthing as the transcript also shows the time in the video when it was said
Hi Thanks for the video. My main comment was it was too fast for me to follow especially as I did not know what it was you were about to show until it was over. Yes I know I can always replay it and I will probably several times :) I have never used gimp before or anything similar so this is all new to me.
lindsay lamarca Very sorry about that. I've been having trouble managing my time lately. Here's a good video that goes into detail on that - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-NcIPME9X_r4.html
This video has helped me go from knowing NOTHING to knowing some things. Im trying to merg together many images to create an awesome art picture but I cant figure out have to drag the cut out I made away from the scrap background it was on
Hello. I think that as you know how to use and explain how to use Gimp, it would be super tremendously helpful if you create a video on how to step-by-step adjust figures for publication in PLoS ONE, a Scientific Journal. This is just a kind suggestion (and almost a plea). PLoS ONE requires authors to submit their figures as TIFF. Once we saved the file from Excel, for example, if it's a graph, in PDF format (to do this the proper way: select the graph, Ctrl+P, select Save as PDF instead of a printer, click on Printer Properties, then Layout tab, then Advanced, then under the Graphic menu item change Print Quality to 300 ppi, and click OK, and Print to save as PDF). Then, open the PDF file in Gimp to: 1) set resolution to 300-600 ppi, 2) set bit depth to 8 bit, 3) crop unnecessary white space around the figure, leaving a fine (2 point) border, 4) flatten the image, 5) remove alpha channels using channels or transparency tools, 6) size the image with proportions constrained to min width = 2.6 in or 6.68 cm or 789 pixels at 300 ppi, max width = 7.5 in or 19.05 cm or 2250 pixels at 300 ppi, and max height (preferably never that big) = 8.75 in or 22.3 cm or 2625 pixels at 300 ppi, and 7)do not "Save as", but rather "Export as", then select TIFF as format type, and LZW as compression. If you could make a video of all the steps required to meet the 7 requirements, that would be TERRIFIC! May be even PLoS ONE would add a link to such video. You can see all the instructions for authors in here: journals.plos.org/plosone/s/figures under "Converting files to TIFF or EPS". I really hope you do the video!! If so, thanks!!
It's a reallly great tutorial, but goes at almost breakneck speed. Not everyone will be able to keep up. Good thing I can pause it and rewind, when I need to. It would be good to have a transcript of the entire tutorial and to list where on the timeline each item is explained. Thank you so much, Galactics Tutorials! P.S. It would be nice to have some kind of educational app where content was presented in separate sections, and the user could press 'Continue' or 'Repeat' at the end of each short section.
I am really thankful for what you've done so far , you've helped me a lot .. and i wish you can upload more tutorials concerning the web mockup designs in GIMP and also some good looking icons ^_^
For a quasi-luddite like me Gimp is super hard to use but I am motivated to learn. Yours is the best beginner video I have found so far and I have looked at many today. Thanks for the great work. May I ask how you create your transcriptions by the way? i.e. Do you use special speech-to-text software or just type it out by hand? Thanks again!!
Galactic, it appears to me you may be the man to answer this question which has so far stumped everyone on the forums I've visited. How do you deselect a tool on a Mac when you are done with it in GIMP 2.8? Thanks Galactic, I hope you can help us.
gimp is great if you don't have the cash for PS (and it's easier to use imo) i had no idea that the "rectangle selection" tool could do that :D (that's *very* helpful to me.. i have an awful pulse.. ) 11:30 you can increase / decrease the zoom with CTRL + scroll wheel up or down ^^ great guide man :D
This is an OMG moment. With your instructions in the updated tutorial, I got my answer. Thank you, Quick question though. Can I add my own patterns to expand patterns? And I f so, How. Thank you kindly.
