Great Video. It's March 24, 2024.. I Started Canning almost 2 yrs ago. I Love these Lids.. I had one fail last night out of almost 100 jars in the past yr, (sure it was my error, and redoing it Now with the next batch). I wanted something Economical compared to single use that were Hard to find, and these beat the $$ of The Other Brand... just wanted to add that it was recommended (somewhere) to put a small Dot with Permanent Marker on the Red Seal each time you use them, and If I remember correctly it was 6-8 times was the recommendation... obviously if yours "go bad" before Or after that, at least you'll have an idea... and I DID buy The Bulk and So Glad I Did... I was Recently Introduced to Bacon Bits and Pieces and found them for $21.99 on a 10lb box.. so After watching Several YT Videos, I Just finished processing 40 lbs... If processed properly (Pressure Canned) it lasts 8-10 yrs. And So much better than Sliced Bacon at dbl or triple $$$. Just thought I'd share.. ty.

The dot idea is great! I hadn't thought to do that. I will say, though, that there is no tested safe way to can bacon. I'm so sorry! I did that years ago, too, when I started canning. My bacon went bad in the jars. That should never happen with tested safe recipes. The reason bacon isn't suitable for canning (except in small amounts in certain tested safe recipes) is that it is both cured and more fat than meat. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

Something made in america? In you dreams. Grandma's canning jars were awesome. There were no over lords for safety and they all lived. She had a family of 13, her and Grandpa. .

I was thinking I had checked my few Weck jars I have and that they are not recommended for pressure canning - however, this German dude on his channel got himself a pressure canner from the states and used them with no problems. I wish I had all my mother's Weck jars! Spilled milk.... Weck is the German Mason/Ball btw. Still have one of the ancient thermometers you'd stick in the hole of the lid of the waterbath canner, they can by temp depending on the fruit! So many degrees for say cherries for such and such time. Not all fruit was brought to boil. Thanks for a nice review on the lids!

Unfortunately, using Weck jars and having them not break in a pressure canner is not the same thing as saying the food in them is preserved in a safe wsy. Pressure canning is for low acid foods that are high risk for botullism if you get the canning wrong. It's just not worth the risk for me.
@kleineroteHex
@kleineroteHex 3 года назад
@@Proverbs31Homestead we never canned low acid foods or meat, since we had no pressure canner when I grew up; if we canned beans it was in a vinegar based brine and beans and carrots had been precooked. We mostly had sour cherries, gooseberries, and may be some apple sauce, red beets also precooked in a pickled brine; any root veg we mostly cold/root cellar stored and did not can much of them. The Germans would have all died of botulism if they did not do it "right" - they survived to get mask laws now.... the world is a strange place (actually it is not so funny, but looking back some things we took for granted and safe now seem dangerous though no one died - yes there are always exceptions) I still don't know why you would say if a Weck jar withstands pressure canning the food would not be safe in it, but it's probably the way I read it.
@Proverbs31Homestead
@Proverbs31Homestead 3 года назад
@@kleineroteHex I just mean that the jars may not be suitable and provide a good seal/allow the food to be heated thoroughly. Pressure canning is rare in Europe, which is probably why the Weck jars haven't been tested for pressure canning (as far as I can tell, anyway).

Do Not Buy these lids in bulk without trying them first! After getting suggestion after suggestion from Harvest Guard and following all of their directions exactly I could not get better than 50-60% failure rate on waterbath canning. Unfortunately I believed the RU-vid videos and bought in bulk. By the time my canning season came around it was passed the return/refund timeframe and Harvest Guard would do nothing for me. Buyer Beware!
@Proverbs31Homestead

It's always a good idea to just buy a few of a new to you canning lid, so you can see how you like them. However, can say with confidence that the problem here is not the lids themselves. Keep working on your technique and until you get it down, just can water so you're not wasting food. (For those reading this who may not know, reusable lids are put on differently than disposable lids). Harvest Guard is a great product that I use regularly.

@@Proverbs31Homestead I just need to be sure people understand that I am a very capable person and follow instructions very well. I have practiced and practiced following all the advice from Harvest Guard with no further improvement. I will not use these lids at all because the loss is too great. Of course one should try things out before investing. I was stupid to buy bulk but I trusted all these RU-vid videos. I don't want other trusting people to make the same mistake. One RU-vid author even responded to me that she only actually gets 80% (in her 100% video).

@@KathyFlint I'm sorry you've struggled with this. My seal rate wth Harvest Guard lids is the same or better as when I use Ball or Kerr.
